Way to go, Thor!

BigV 12-14-2011 01:18 PM

Our state is undergoing YET ANOTHER BUDGET REDUCTION. It's been rough, very rough. One area that has taken a beating is the funding for public schools. Ironically, our state constitution says that education is a primary responsibility of the state. Yet, there are cuts and more cuts.

A short while ago, I got a call from the school office where SonofV goes to school. I picked up, and it was SonofV. He said there was going to be a protest march, and he read me the "mission statement". He then asked if it was ok with me if he went.

You betcha!

He's Time's Person of the Year!

UPDATE: 5 p.m. Hundreds of students from Ballard, Roosevelt, Ingraham, Garfield and Nathan Hale high schools left classes Wednesday afternoon and walked or rode the bus to the University of Washington’s Red Square. There, they held a rally along with UW students, chanting slogans like “We’re the future of our nation, no more cuts to education.”

Seattle school administrators released this prepared statement:

“We certainly appreciate our students’ involvement and interest in the state’s current funding issues, especially K-12 funding. We are proud of our civic-minded students. However, we encourage our students to stay in class… Discipline is up to the principal’s discretion. Typically, absences are excused with parent/guardian permission.”
I told SonofV that he *will* be marked absent, that is the price he pays for his civil disobedience. I will send a note with him to school saying that he was absent with my explicit permission. He was really amped when I saw him this afternoon.

I understand the school district's position, and I support it. I have a long consistent record of "encouraging my student to stay in class". I support his learning, and today, class was outside, on the road, in Red Square with hundreds of his fellow students, making themselves heard, making a difference.

So post Christmas concert, Lil Griff's band director approached us, "The boys don't want to here it but 'Lil G' is the best drummer in the school right now." 10th grade girl sounded awesome playing teh jazz. Super proud Dad.

Most Excellent, Lil G :)

Thor scored his first real goal. :D

I don't count the one from the tourney in Canada where the other team were so bad our team lined up all the poor players who never scored before and had them scpre.

He scored this one with his butt and the other team objected, but it counted. Then he broke his stick and got a penalty (the only one of the game) because he didn't know you have to drop a broken stick immediately. We got the stick replaced because it was brand new and broke at the joint -clearly not glued properly.

But just to reiterate

Thor scored!

(And we did not total the car on the icy roads, unlike many other unfortunate travellers this morning..... two cards in one month would have sucked)

ZenGum 12-17-2011 05:03 PM

How the heck did he score with his butt???

monster 12-17-2011 05:44 PM

Well, he was going for the rebound, but fell so it rebounded off his butt.

A goal is scored when the puck completely crosses the goal line and enters the net. A goal may be disallowed under the following circumstances:

the puck is directed in by an attacker's high stick (above the crossbar), or when the puck has been directed, batted, thrown or kicked into the net by an attacking player other than with a stick (angling one's skate so the puck deflects off it into the goal is allowed).

I played in an adult league with a guy who didn't know that. Newer sticks are not worth a shit, a few years back I played with an old school Christian ash stick and I could bust up opposing players sticks at will, I think I paid $13 for it back in 1986.

But anyway, this is my daughter graduating from Wright State University in May.
