We are boating with college kids to the beach off the coast. It is usually crazy out there on any holiday.

Laundry
Packing for vacation in San Diego
Watching fireworks through my kitchen window from the golf course next door.

Well it was a bit hairy. Seas 3 - 6 feet, we only encountered those waves at one point, the rest of the time it was 2 - 4 feet. The wind was blowing out of the NE between 12 and 15 mph which generated the waves. When we could hug the shore against the wind it was minimized but knowing we always had to cross to the other side to turn was part of the day. We got wet, had a great day and had to much sun. Happy 4th all.

Still successfully in my pajamas at almost 6 pm. This is it!!! A day for me to celebrate freedom. The freedom to stay at home!! Yeah! Light a firecracker for me!

The projectile vomiting is over so I've got that going for me.

we tubed.

I was going to take a video of it for you guys, but then jinx reminded me that if I fucked up the video camera, we wouldn't be replacing it any time soon in this economy.

anyway, we arrived at the launch point just as the local canoe rental place pulled up with 40 (FORTY!) tubers!

talk about shitty timing.

we got in ahead of them, but they were right on our heels, so we stopped and had a sandwich and let them go by. It took a good 45 minutes for them, and the subsequent canoers and kayakers, to thin out enough for us to try to enjoy some semblance of river privacy. I hate the public. It's crazy when the river is that crowded. Last time we went, there was like NO oNE out there.... today it was friggin rush hour. In spie of all of that, I had a nice time, and the weather was perfect.

Happy 4th, you guys!

Fireworks were most excellent. It's a little hot and sticky and buggy here. I should probably shower all that deet off before I go to bed. I heard the local rental canoes were all out before midday and the waiting line was way long. Good job we went to the pool instead. Perfect place to de-sticky. Someone kept trying to give me work to do for 8am tomorrow, but I told her where to stick it. :D

Wait, what are we celebrating again? ;)

...I found it amusing that everyone said "Happy 4th" rather than "happy independance day".

As Brits, we don't get an independance day to celebrate -we were too barbaric and no-one wanted us that badly -even the Romans gave up before we were fully conquered! We get Guy Fawkes night, but it's in rainy November ....although at least you don't have to wait very long for the dark necessary to really enjoy fireworks. I can't believe how many people set them off in the daylight!

BTW all but the lamest fireworks are illegal here, but we're close to Ohio, so those intent on a good display just pop over the norder....

Met up with a couple of families from the neighborhood at the Air Force Memorial in Arlington, which affords excellent views of the fireworks without the crazy crowds. Nice picnic, good friends, nice show. Unfortunately, after the show, the cops wouldn't let us out of the parking lot the way we needed to go, and we got diverted into the worst traffic ever. I'm still wound up from that mess.

We set off some basic stuff in our driveway. Started while it was still light, but it was reasonably dark by the end. Minifob is still talking about the "romo candles" and the "festibal balls." My stepson pranced around like an ice dancer with his sparkler, but at least he was willing to actually come outside this year to participate instead of hiding indoors. We all had on bug repellant, but the skeeters still ate us alive. Minifobette placidly imitated the noises that the fireworks made, especially the high-pitched screaming ones, but wasn't at all afraid of them, which surprised me. Overall, the kids had a good time and it worked out really nicely.
