A few Dutch people I know told me they are peeved about foreigners using the Netherlands as a playground for behavior that is illegal in their own country. I guess their dislike of hypocrisy is tempered by their love of mercantilism.

They're proud of their trading and money-making skills.

I guess when what you're selling comes with people being sick on the pavements and falling into canals it would make you a bit weary though.

I knew three Dutch families and none of them would have set foot(footfoot?) in Amsterdam, so I do get what you mean. One had a house about 20 KMs out of the city, but would drive for KMs in the other direction for large purchases. I was invited there one summer, but I knew the son had ulterior motives and I just didn't fancy him.
