Oh, it's not so bad as all that. De-wave measures are a good thing. They've gone away from interior baffling and now confine water mattresses inside an armored, watertight anti-flooding envelope, which stiffens up a simple mattress no end; also has zip off tops for laundering about once a year on gentle cycle.

But waterbeds do tend to make moving around on top of that mattress more than a bit draggy; thing likes to hang on to you. Hotel rooms' stiff mattresses let you get around a lot easier when you're frisky.

Ok... Thanks for the visual.

Assembly of this king size bed had taken me 2 solid hours. Excellent instructions... Everything fit as it should. Putting the 12 legs and 24 bolts with washers and wing nuts was the most time consuming part.

As always, I managed to get one part upside down, requiring deconstruction and a do over. The air mattresses have apertures for the hoses which inflate them.... And printed right there on each it says, 'this side down'... So having put them in that side up, I had to disconnect the air hoses, swap and flip both mattresses, and reinflate. Cock. I also managed to put the tag at the foot of the bed where it will be visible. Cock cock. Fuck it. I'll just snip that off....

So as soon as the sweat dries, I'm gonna find out what my sleep number is....

Fuck. It's almost 2 am. Deconstruction of my old bed took far too long because all of my Alan wrenches were out in the garage, but I insisted on rooting through every possible place inside that might be harboring the right size... For like 2o minutes... before I finally relented, put shoes on, and took the 90 second walk out to the garage to get the goddamned alan motherfucking wrenches that were exactly where they should be.

So what is your sleep number?

nowhereman 02-11-2015 07:18 AM

 Nooooo.... Don't try it, Jim... especially on yourself.
I've heard it's much more painful in adulthood than in infancy.

Ert.

I slept at 15 last night, and was comfy. Didn't get to sleep until 3, and up at 9, so not really long enough to get a real feel for whether or not my back would get stiff like it used to do...

glatt 02-11-2015 10:29 AM

Does it feel like a regular mattress, or more like one of those inflatable guest beds?

bbro 02-11-2015 10:49 AM

I was thinking of getting one of these. I am curious to see how you like it and how long it takes to find your 'number'. I am definitely in need of a new mattress.

Yah, feels like a real mattress. It's got cushions wrapped around the air chambers, and between... Plus a memory foam topper... And all of that is encased in a big mattress shaped bag with a mattress textured top. You can sit on the edge without the other side moving at all.

It's pretty cool.

I do, very much. I especially appreciate it when I am drinking red wine while jumping up and down on the bed.

When Jim's question if anyone had experience with these didn't get much response I went to Consumer reports online. They had good things to say about them in their usual left-handed nit-picky way. The overall ratings were very high.

glatt 02-17-2015 05:18 AM

Yeah, I did some research too and sleep number and tempurpedic are both highly rated while conventional inner coil mattresses are not.

Sleeplikethedead.com has tons of info. Makes me want to buy a cheap foam mattress from Amazon since they are the best value. $450 or so for nearly the highest rated bed. I still need to do more research though.

footfootfoot 02-17-2015 02:44 PM

In Albany there is a foam products wholesaler that carries a hijillion different types of foam, memory foam among them in all dimensions. The price is about half of what a tempurpedic mattress is. I'd bet there must be a similar type store in your area.

You wouldn't get the plushy zippered cover with the tempurpedic logo though. :(
