If only we could start whacking the violent offenders instead of giving them free room and board for a period of time, then we wouldn't need body armor for guards.
We call them prison guards not room valets. the guests in these facilities are there for a reason. I can't believe politicians and lawyers are worried about hurting prisoners' precious little feelings.

There is some basis to the saying "treat them like animals and they will act like animals." Perhaps the wearing of the vests incites more violent outbreaks. I watched a show on Court TV recently about how a deliberate massive increase in the number of *female* guards at one prison has caused violence to unbelievably plummet.

Nonetheless, that just means they should find a way to disguise the vests while they wear them.

I suspect most female prison guards have more to prove and do so early on to maintain order.

In the program they were suggesting that the prisoners spent so much time just chatting and lightly flirting with the guards that they didn't bother to antagonize one another. They all wanted to look good in front of the ladeeeez.

That effect probably disappeared shortly after the researchers left ... following a honeymoon period of something under a month, the prisoners figure out that although there are female CO's, they are just as big dicks as the men.
