Took me about 10 minutes, running slow tonight.

lumberjim 02-05-2008 11:51 PM

you've got a lot of crap, pat!

thanks for the tour!

Elspode 02-06-2008 01:55 PM

Sorry about sniffling like a coke addict. I seem to have worse allergies in the Winter than any other time of year, and those are worst during the morning, which is when I shot that damn thing. I also note that I was kinda ripping through the narration, so I probably sounded like a meth head to top it all off. I'm not.

monster 02-06-2008 04:17 PM

It was excellent, splode ...the sniffing thing is the mom in me ;)

classicman 02-06-2008 06:47 PM

Spode - you rock - that was awesome! Great place, great guy - A perfect fit!
worth the 45 mins it took for my POS computer to download it.

Chocolatl 02-06-2008 07:16 PM

Cool place, Elspode! I love that you have separate areas for ritual space -- hopefully someday I'll have a house with that kind of room. (I also envy the amount of counter space in your kitchen.)

That may be nicest thing anyone has ever said to me! :D

glatt 02-08-2008 07:38 AM

Spode, I downloaded it last night, and only had a chance to watch the first couple minutes. But from what I've seen so far, I like your place. That Big Bertha stove, melting the floor tiles must be a pretty impressive event to witness. I also like your herb collection. You could open a store!

Thanks, but I wonder if you really have any idea of the impact some of what you write has on other people. I don't know what you do for a living, but damn well better include writing. If not, you surely have missed you calling and the world is worse off for it.
(less they read your tidbits here on the cellar)

Elspode 02-09-2008 01:21 AM

Well, shit. Now, *that's* the nicest thing anyone has said to me.

I've mentioned before that I have written professionally exactly twice in my life, both times in very limited formats and for limited audiences. I did very well as an editor/arts reviewer/editorialist for the UMKC (University of Missouri-Kansas City) UNews. My work was well received by readers, and most importantly to me at the time, lauded by the professorial sponsor of the newspaper. He repeatedly cited my work as the best of all the staff, and when he was critical, it was unerringly constructive and totally valid. Odd...I never met the man, but I will carry his praise and critiques with me to the grave. He was absolutely dead on.

My only other "publish for pay" instance was a sidebar thing that I wrote for the KC edition of The Pitch. It was a horrid experience. I was writing about a fairly serious event that was in the "elaboration on upcoming events" section, a weekend seminar given by a highly qualified and well known Reiki master from Australia. I wrote and rerwrote this trifling piece five times (and we're talking a five paragraph article, here), only to have it repeatedly rejected by the twenty-something section editor, who wanted it to be "edgier, more flippant, trendier..."

My biggest limitation in writing is that I really only do well when describing reality. I rarely succeed in fabricating quality work out of nothing. Even the few songs I've written over the years are always based on reality.

But I do very much appreciate the support I always get from my Cellar family. In truth, it is this sort of positive strokes that matter to me. The rest is bullshit.

Griff 02-09-2008 06:16 AM

Crap, I can't get it to load. I'll try later...

Very cool home, Glatt. Thanks for the tour.

It looks like a comfortable and happy place. :)

And...If you ever wanted to work in talk radio, you surely have the voice for it.

slang 02-09-2008 06:33 PM

Hey Ep! Your clip finally downloaded.

Thanks for taking the time to make the tour video.

It looks like a pretty big house with a big lot. Perfect for the dogs and summer parties.

Just coincidence that your cat started scratching on que? :D

I like your house and appreciate being able to walk through it with you.

Elspode 02-10-2008 09:44 AM

I enjoyed sharing it. Wish my cam was a little more capable, but I think the gist of things came through, jerky movement and all.

Cat did in fact just do her thing because she wanted to at that moment. Do cats ever do otherwise? :-)

Chocolatl 06-22-2010 09:47 AM

Kitsune and I are supposed to close on our first home Thursday or Friday of this week and will be moving in over the weekend! Is it sad that one of the things I am most looking forward to is doing a new video tour?

glatt 06-22-2010 09:50 AM

Congratulations! That's awesome. I loved the feeling of buying our house.

monster 06-22-2010 10:28 AM

The octagonal turrety bit looks cool. I want a non-rectangular room/turret. What is your view from those windows? Something cool or the rest of the neighborhood? (Which could, of course, be cool...)

jinx 06-22-2010 10:50 AM

Congrats Choco and Kits!!!
Can't wait to see it all.

Chocolatl 06-22-2010 11:01 AM

Thanks, guys!

The octo-turret is in fact now a wonderfuly weird septagon. Originally, the room extended back to be a formal living room & dining area. Since we are buying new construction, we had the option of putting in a wall and closing it off so that now the septagon is going to be Kitsune's office. We are moving into the suburbs, so the view is not too exciting -- just the rest of the neighborhood.

BigV 06-22-2010 11:08 AM

WTG Choco and Kitsune! My heartiest congratulations to you both!

classicman 06-22-2010 11:56 AM

Very nice - Congrats!!!
Virtual Wine, salt & bread headed your way.

zippyt 06-22-2010 03:38 PM

Yeah !! Cool House , Cant Wait for the tour !!!

Clodfobble 06-22-2010 10:46 PM

I love the septagon too. Congratulations to you both!

Chocolatl 06-24-2010 12:48 PM

Thanks, guys! Closing is possibly delayed, but should be either tomorrow or Monday. Trying to finish packing the apartment, today...

monster 06-24-2010 12:49 PM

it's a brand of antibiotic cream. Choco's house is sponsored by Walgreen's. The kitchen is aka the Band Aid Station, the bathroom is the Angel Soft Retreat and the bedroom.....

This was the excitement in our lives this year...

April 5th, 2010, a storm hit the PDX area and the top of a Douglas fir hit us.
No one was hurt, but it was scary.

June 6th, and thanks to 1 insurance company and these 3 carpenters our roof and porch are now restored.

Thanks for the compliments...
The house was built in 1910 and we have called it home since '75.

The spirit of the original owner, Mrs Knox, still lives with us.
We know this by the "spot of coldness" in the downstairs bedroom
We love this place (raised our 3 daughters here) but my wife and I will probably have to downsize next year.

Here is an interim pic of the repairs in progress

This is the porch roof now

And this is the side (right, as facing the house)

lumberjim 06-24-2010 03:00 PM

I love the rough stone look. likes there's no mortar...just piled rock. awesome diggs.

TheMercenary 06-24-2010 03:06 PM

Generally, SW Portland, OR

glatt 06-24-2010 03:21 PM

They did a good job matching the repairs to the original house. You can't tell what's old and what's new.

squirell nutkin 06-24-2010 03:36 PM

You could shoot a Cabela's catalog there.

Nice. Is the interior period as well?

Yes, they did...

In the 1900's, lumber here in OR was "full dimension" here so a 2x4 measured 2 full inches by 4 full inches. With prior approval of the insurance company, our repairs were done with full dimension lumber sawed in a small custom mill up in the (bear infested ? ) woods.

jinx 06-24-2010 05:59 PM

Wow, gorgeous!

zippyt 06-24-2010 06:12 PM

Verry Cool House !!

Chocolatl 06-24-2010 06:37 PM

Beautiful home, Lamplighter!

Griff 06-24-2010 07:33 PM

Congrats Choco!
Nice house Lamplighter despite the storm damage.

How would you mount it?

Shawnee123 06-24-2010 08:12 PM

Furtively, with the door locked.

monster 06-24-2010 08:32 PM

Does that cost extra?

Shawnee123 06-24-2010 09:08 PM

I think it's all part and parcel.

monster 06-24-2010 09:26 PM

Ah. A classy service.

Probably in an action pose. With a tree on its roof or something.

Tulip 06-24-2010 11:02 PM

Wow...wonderful house tours and great homes. :D It's a pity that Elspode's tour is no longer available so I couldn't view that one. Congrats Chocolatl on your new house, and Lamplighter, as gorgeous as your house is, I would not live there. The spirit of the previous owner still lives there??!!?? Skeeeery!!!!!!!!!

squirell nutkin 06-25-2010 03:20 PM

Lamp said it was a cold spot, so you could keep your beer there! Spirits for the spirits!

jinx 06-25-2010 04:59 PM

I remember a house guest swearing our last house was haunted - he was totally convinced of it because the house was more than 10 minutes old and he 'felt something'. Nutjob.

ZenGum 06-25-2010 09:21 PM

Casa del Lumberjinx looks like it could be haunted, I must admit, and all those "In case of spousal insanity break glass" boxes are a tip off too.

jinx 06-25-2010 09:28 PM

No not this house, our last one, about 100 years younger than this one.

I could totally see this one being haunted. It's old (almost 200), it was a doctor's home/office so people might have died here, I let people sprinkle a dead guy's ashes in the yard because he lived here as a kid, and most creepy; we found a bone under the floor in the attic of the human variety.
But it's not.

xoxoxoBruce 06-25-2010 10:52 PM

Mine is, but the old lady doesn't eat anything, and she doesn't bother me, so I don't make her pay rent.

Sundae 08-03-2010 12:27 PM

I'm sure we once had a What's In Your Fridge thing going, but I can't find it.
Oh, maybe that was when MTV Cribs came round.

Anyway, here is mine in the hope other people will reciprocate.
It's not quite as personal as a house tour, but we'll get to hear your voice and see your food after all. Oh and you can always fridge'clean beforehand. I didn't, but I blame everything on the 'rents anyway.

Oops, just realised I identified Boursin as soft cream. It's not, it's cream cheese (with garlic and herbs). Probably why I tried to say garlic for the gherkin relish.

Also, I missed the salad drawer underneath.
And we don't keep fruit in the fridge (apart from berries).
So we're not as unhealthy as we look!

jinx 08-19-2010 11:35 AM

Hey cool, I just got a letter from the historic commission saying we're getting a plaque for the front of the house.
"You are the owner of one of the 24 most historic buildings in our town, built between 1740 and 1860." So we get a plaque. For free even. Cool.

BrianR 08-19-2010 12:19 PM

Cool beans, Jinx! Make sure to get a good photo of the plaque to post.

In other news, my wife and I are closing on our first "together" home. It's quite small and we rent the lot it sits on, but it'll be ours, no mortgage. The plan is to spend no more than five years in it before upgrading to a much bigger model on our own land. On the bad side, there's no cable service so we're dependent on the Dish for TV and possibly internet if the local DSL isn't good enough. On the bright side, it's quite shady and the neighbors are said to be friendly. I'll post pics after we get the pink slip and keys (and do some sprucing up).
