The original has more background and is turned 90 degrees.
It is amazing how deceptive it still is after 70 years.

Leveled wood, ground off nail heads.

Right.

To be precise, the points of the nails were ground off, not the heads.

I have been working on a project (new thread pending...) and this is a chunk of a couple layers of plywood that had some protruding nails---not anymore!

Then I cut it as needed, pics later.

Here's a shot of an adjacent section pre-"leveling".
