classicman 12-18-2007 10:28 AM

children are like little puppies aren't they? I'm not sure about the dog thing anymore - and I already have some cats... maybe I'll just not get any other pets. Thanks for your input all!

Shawnee123 12-18-2007 10:39 AM

Labradors are normally a good choice if you have enough room for them.

classicman 12-18-2007 10:18 PM

I bred goldens as a boy - field trial/show champion mix. Wonderful breed - definitely my favorite. Room is an issue for me. I'm not sure I feel right having a large animal in this small a space. Then I have the three cats to consider. Lastly there is the maintenance of a dog - walking and all. Not sure I'm up for it.....yet.

Razzmatazz13 12-18-2007 11:31 PM

My cousin just got one of those little designer dogs...it weighs only about a pound, and isn't meant to get much bigger...it seems frisky and is very lovable, (and rather catlike)...it's also pad-trained (like a cat) so it doesn't have to be taken out as much as other dogs.

Maybe something like that could be feasible for you?

Shawnee123 12-19-2007 07:36 AM

Golden retriever =/= Labrador retriever. But both great dogs, just the same!

ZenGum 12-19-2007 07:40 AM

About two years ago I walked past a pet shop that had Labrador/Samoyed cross puppies in the window display. Cuteness factor 10+. It wasn't so much a case of eventually tearing myself away as being displaced by the adoring mob.

As usual, you are correct, but the image in the post to which I was referring is, I believe, of a golden retriever puppy, not a labrador.

Shawnee123 12-19-2007 08:27 AM

Jase, this I know. That was for Zen's ben...efit.

Doggone!

Razzmatazz13 12-19-2007 12:42 PM

Lucky's leg got caught in a trap or something and by the time she got home (3 days later) there were only 2 choices - put her to sleep or amputate. 5 years later she is still gets around really well.

Razzmatazz13 12-19-2007 10:56 PM

Doesn't sound very "lucky"....

classicman 12-19-2007 11:18 PM

She was the only survivor of 4, was born on the basement stairs & fell down, mother left, fed with an eye dropper... just keeps on keepin on.

ZenGum 12-20-2007 09:03 AM

At what point did she get the name of "Lucky"?

classicman 12-20-2007 10:25 AM

At birth - named by my youngest son. Funny how it became so appropriate.

Shawnee123 12-20-2007 10:36 AM

Your youngest son gave birth to a puppy?

(Hey, someone was gonna do it.)

DanaC 01-09-2008 03:56 PM

Razz is that a Bichon Frise puppy?

My mum had a gorgeous little Bichon Frise (called Homer). He was highly intelligent, extremely mischievous and playful and could fit into her basket bag when travelling. Unfortunately he had a congenital liver condition which we didn't know about until just before it killed him (aged 4). Was such a shame, he was a really ace dog.

Thing about Bichons is they are tiny, but built like a miniature big dog, if that makes sense? Not like many of the toy breeds.

monster 01-09-2008 04:15 PM

Isn't Bichon Frise a type of lettuce?

DanaC 01-09-2008 04:17 PM

lol, I have no idea. But it's definately a type of dog :P Originally bred for the French nobility.

[eta] actually, that last bit was wrong. They became popular with the French nobility in the 16th and 17th century but have been around much longer. Originally a mediterranean breed, popular with Spanish sailors. Very popular in Spanish court also, the favourite breed of the Infantas.

This bit from wiki, I really love:

Quote:

The Bichon went to sea as a working Spanish boat dog. They were perfect for a boat because they do not shed, don't need a lot of exercise, and are fine companions, as well as obedient and easily trained. Though not considered a retriever or water dog, the Bichon, due to its ancestry, has an affinity for and enjoys water and retrieving. On the boats however, the dog's job was to meet and greet people with great enthusiasm. Their purpose was to make weary people smile and feel at ease, but most of all to cause these people to like the Spanish. It is one of the few dogs that has eyes like a human, that it shows the whites of its eye as well as expressions of happiness in them. The Bichons were the little happy ambassadors for the Spanish at every new port of call.
