Fave Do-Nut

I relate, tragically, to Homer Simpson. However, my fave do-nut is NOT a pink-frosted nightmare but an elegant Plain.

What say you, the great unwashed? WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE DOUGHNUT?

glatt 03-13-2006 02:36 PM

If it's fresh, I like a glazed. If it's not so fresh, I like a creme filled with frosting.

Undertoad 03-13-2006 02:43 PM

There is nothing in the world like the fresh, hot, plain Krispy Kreme.

All KK locations in Philadelphia have closed. Nearest one is now 80 miles away.

:cry::donut:

Happy Monkey 03-13-2006 03:15 PM

Boston Creme. Or whatever a store happens to call chocolate iced, custard filled donuts (not whipped cream, custard).

:cry::donut:

HOLY SHIT!!! Say it ain't so. They always seemed to do a good business. Oh, well. I'd also rate them tops. Dunkin Donuts would be second, and I'll eat the ones at Wawa if I haven't had breakfast yet.

jinx 03-13-2006 03:26 PM

Buttermilk, plain (old fashioned), french cruller, chocolate cream filled. In that order.

DnD is less than a mile away, I'm well researched in this subject.

In KC, we have Lamar's Donuts, which offers an artery-clogging, diabetic shock-inducing 8" long, 2.5" wide Longjohn, frosting filled and smothered in chocolate.

See center bar at bottom of linked page for a very slight idea of this monster.

http://www.lamars.com/products/donuts.html

It is beyond decadence. It is the donut that must surely be served at the feet of the Gods of Olympus.

Beestie 03-13-2006 07:24 PM

Maple frosted. Dunkin Donuts being my "supplier."

Et tu? Or maybe three.

Don't like the chains, bakery donuts are where it's at. Maria's in Ridley and KYJ's in Chester, 'round here.
Do yourself a favor and search out local bakery shops, it's worth the effort.:yum:

richlevy 03-13-2006 08:19 PM

Wow. Life imitating art.:p

Did you get the idea from today's paper?

Mrs. Parker 03-14-2006 08:16 AM

Can't get past that KK "Hot now" sign when it is lit. But, if the glazed aren't fresh, the blueberry filled with powdered sugar is worth the layer of white dust on my clothes and car seats.

LabRat 03-14-2006 10:10 AM

Huh. KC is where I had my first KK ~7 yrs ago, now they are all over the place here and closing out east. Time to sell my stock eh?

I third the custard filled chocolate frosted bismark, (as they are called around here). Ties with the harder to find custard filled chocolate frosted long john. I do not like the 'cake' donuts. Even though they actually have less fat, they taste to me like they have more calories, plus they fill you up faster, so you can't have as many. I HATE sprinkles, little vile colored mouse turds.

I actually really enjoy Hy-Vee donuts--and they usually have a huge selection if you get there in time.

You're joking, right? The time to sell was two and a half years ago, before it lost 80% of its value.

KKD over 3 years

bluecuracao 03-14-2006 03:02 PM

My absolute favorite: DD Toasted Coconut. But it's been at least a whole year since I've had a donut, so I'd have no problem snarfing down a pink-frosted one if it were in front of me right now.

Kagen4o4 03-14-2006 04:29 PM

pineapple donuts or jam donuts covered in chocolate. or a fresh crisp cinnamon donut.

BAHAHAHA i googled "donut" and this was the first image!!!!

Ahhh...begs the question: Are you SpongeWorthy?

zippyt 03-14-2006 10:56 PM

The all time fav ( they are closed now :( ) was Harlows in Memphis .
You could watch them being made , get one of these still hot lovelys , a box of Jungle Juice , and ride the coin operated Elephant out front !!!!

seakdivers 03-14-2006 11:15 PM

Oh my god.. just like UT, it's the fresh, plain KKs that get me.

At the Block at Orange in Orange County Cali, there is a KK (across the parking lot), a Dave & Busters and a Barnes & Noble. It's Heaven...... I can eat doughnuts, then buy a good book, and then have giant beers while my husband plays video games.

Clodfobble 03-15-2006 02:20 PM

Your basic glazed donut makes me want to puke. Cake-style donuts are the only way to go.

wolf 03-15-2006 10:09 PM

The Dunkin Donuts "Kreme Delight." This is the white cream (not custard) filled donut with chocolate frosting.

Next after that is the venerable jelly fill. I still have not learned not to eat these when I am wearing black or navy.

seakdivers 03-15-2006 10:35 PM

I seem to manage to do the donut-tard thing every time I eat one topped with powdered sugar. While taking a bite I and up laughing at something so powdered sugar goes flying everywhere.

It's worth it though...

That's too hilarious. I'd like to see that--from a safe distance, of course.

robsterman1 04-06-2006 07:15 PM

Krispy Kreme tops my list, but Dunkin Donuts makes the BETTER coffee...

footfootfoot 04-06-2006 08:05 PM

I think I should host the next forks. I am also on my thrird belgian trippel from Zippyt (review? see my last foru or five posts) any way.

My neighbor donw the street is a third genration baker. (reitred) now a poiltoi

pilot on teh weekends he bakes astounding pastries. You have not lived ––I guraneeet (who amI kidding?) it, you ahnvent lived unitl yopu have a two minute donut. That is, a donut that has just been out of the FAT, yes, for two minutes. Just long enough to be edible w/o singeing your mouth.

It is as different from other doughnuts as waxing the dolphin is from amking the two backed beast.

not a lie.

forks 2007, don't tell my wife.

chainsaw 04-07-2006 11:59 AM

I love me a good, hot, apple fritter. I know, it's technically not a donut, but the only place you can get them is a donut shop, right?

I'm not a big KK fan. Maybe because I don't like the glazed. Too sweet. Stupid, I know.

I am in the process of inventing the best food ever... The Pizza-Donut.

Probably not any more.

Around here, the Pakistanis' have taken over all of the Dunkin Donuts franchises. One of my less cultured coworkers has taken to calling them Durkha Donuts.

Pakistanis can't make coffee to save their lives.

However, going in wearing an EMT shirt pretty much guarantees at least a half-dozen free donuts and a small box of munchkins with your order.

Tasty Ain't they !!!??!!!!

keryx 04-08-2006 06:37 AM

I like those donuts covered with the crushed peanuts, or powdered sugar, but when I go to the bakery I prefer longjohns with caramel icing, no filling.

WabUfvot5 04-09-2006 04:58 AM

Krispy Kreme are fabulous and my overall choice

I just picked up a 2.25 pound (about 1 kilo) tub of generic chocolate covered mini-donuts at the store. Usually I'm not one for chocolate but they looked so good on an empty stomach. I think I've eaten 10 today so far :|

footfootfoot 04-09-2006 08:40 PM

choc ful o' nuts, when they had a physical presence beyond a can in the store made these awesome cake donuts that were crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside and covered with powdered sugar.

They exist only in my memory and with each passing year get fainter, and fainter and fainter...

Kitsune 04-11-2006 11:41 AM

Donuts? Burn 'em. Beignets for life, bitch!

What is that - a french funnel cake?

In the words of the Cafe Du Monde worker when asked by a Texan if they were "servin' dumplins":

"WHAT? No, honey, deys beignets!"

Urbane Guerrilla 05-01-2006 07:06 PM

I can see why if you grew up with Krispy Kremes you'd stand in a long line to get them if you hadn't had any in a while. I didn't, though. I think that glaze on their raised doughnuts is butterscotch flavored. Good, when warmed, though the doughnut is so lightsome that it seems almost to disappear in your mouth like cotton candy.

Oxnard's now got its Krispy Kreme midget factory. You can watch the doughnuts from raising box through glazing through boxing up and you can have Homer Price flashbacks.

I like old-fashioneds: solid, and good deep flavor. I used to strongly favor cake doughnuts but nowadays try for something a little less dense and therefore presumably less sugar at a time -- I'm eating more raised doughnuts these days. There are a couple of small chains around here, but I don't have a strong preference among the local doughnutiers. Back in 1970s South Dakota, Dunkin Doughnuts used to be it, but the competition is better now. And just as fattening.

Urbane Guerrilla 05-03-2006 07:06 PM

Make that Dunkin Donuts... it bothered me as I wrote it, but time's expired to edit.

cherandbuster 05-27-2006 02:12 PM

OOOOOOOOOOhhhhh gimme a glazed crueller from Dunkin' Donuts please

O. K. I'll take two!!

Ibby 05-29-2006 12:55 AM

Krispy Kreme Original Glazed all the way. They're even good weeks old, though exponentially better fresh...

wolf 05-30-2006 10:34 AM

"Even good weeks old" is not a ringing endorsement.

Happy Monkey 05-30-2006 12:53 PM

Right - how would you know? Boxes of donuts should be empty before they have a chance to get stale.

wolf 05-30-2006 12:56 PM

Any donut that is still edible more than 26 hours after it's conception should not be considered appropriate as a food source.

zippyt 05-30-2006 01:29 PM

Twinkie food groupe ???

wolf 05-30-2006 01:42 PM

The rules for Twinkies are different. Donuts that pride themselves on being freshly made, best served hot, etc. are held to a different standard.

Ibby 05-30-2006 10:24 PM

Hey, I never said I LET them get that old. But they ended up being that old. And they're so damn good, I couldn't not eat them.

Trilby 06-04-2006 02:27 PM

OMG. I just heard. There is a ballpark in St. Louis that serves bacon-cheeseburgers on grilled KRISPY KREME glazed doughnuts. *faints dead away from the anticipation* I WANT ONE! :yum: Natch, the health Nazi's are having their say...but, DAMN! that sounds too good to pass up!

Sorry Bri, but that sounds Gack-a-delic to moi. I'm all about the grilled kaiser roll, mit de poppy seeds.

Ibby 06-11-2006 07:17 PM

's called a heart attack on a plate.

Trilby 06-12-2006 11:27 AM

mmm...a big, fat bratz swimming in grease, wrapped in bacon and served with melted cheese and chili sauce on a butter-soaked pretzel roll is a heart attack on a plate, too.

the hospital I used to work for routinely served that to the third shift employees.

rkzenrage 06-12-2006 04:03 PM

Beignets are not donuts, so I will not pick them...
Cake are my favorite, buttermilk or sour cream to be specific.

skysidhe 06-13-2006 09:36 AM

Dunkin Donuts

any, all , anytime

capnhowdy 06-15-2006 05:29 PM

Hands down.
Krispy Kreme regular glazed, hot of the line. If I can't get those, cruellars are fine. Did I spell that right? Couldn't find the empty bag in the garbage. heehee......
