I need a name

I was found wandering in a truck stop in New Mexico. I had no ID and had been wandering the desert for about two weeks. I was VERY hungry and dehydrated.

I am blind in my left eye, foggy in my right and tend to bump into things. I am also nearly deaf and can only hear loud noises which is why I do not respond to your voice. My sniffer is in tip-top shape however and I love to sniff my way around new places. I have arthritis in my hips and don't walk very well and need help with stairs. I am about twelve years old and seem to be a corgi mongrel. I sleep most of the day but when I am awake, I am very affectionate.

There is a picture of me but the nice trucker who rescued me doesn't know how to resize it to send to you all.

Signed

The Dog

If everyone just submitted the name of the "best dog from my childhood memories" names, eventually you'd come up with the perfect name for your new "Buddy"!

DiscoFever 04-20-2006 01:39 AM

Bitsa or Bitta.

"What kinda dog is that?"
"A bitta this, a bitta that..."

The dog's name is usually what it will respond to. Since the dog is nearly deaf and can only hear loud noises, which is why it does not respond to one's voice, it can be named symbolically after whatever is done to get it's attention:

If you clap your hands - call it hands, manos, or mains ...
If you ring a bell - call it bell or ringer ...
If you toot a horn - call it horny ... well, maybe that's not such a good example; but, you get my drift.

PS: Howdy Folks. :)

DucksNuts 04-20-2006 06:23 AM

Hiya NoBoxes :)

I had a white cat that was totally deaf, everybody used to say "what's your cats name", I'd reply "he's deaf, he doesnt need a name", he did come when you clicked your fingers...if he was looking at you.

skysidhe 04-20-2006 08:32 AM

I'm not good at names.

Someone named named our tough little spitz 'peach' and I couldn't change it.
Fortunatly it's in another language.

Hey, that's an idea. A name in another language. Just don't make it end with the 'no sound':right:

Pie 04-20-2006 09:20 AM

The Sound of One Hand Clapping.

I had the best dog ever when I was a kid. She was a golden retriever and I named her Sunny. I miss her a lot. :sniff:

If he was a girl dog, I'd say name her Helen Keller :D

Anyway, I vote for Hitch

Strictly speaking, it doesn't matter what you call him - he's not gonna hear it.

How about Justice?

TiddyBaby 04-20-2006 11:31 AM

Good point, you could either step over it, or kick its ass out of the way.

See if it's a eunuch or can still be a scoundrel

Spexxvet 04-20-2006 12:09 PM

Bumpy (cause he bumps into things)

What? (cause he can't hear)

Dick (cause dick jokes are always funny)

Dubya (cause Bush sucks)

Sammy Davis Jr or Sandy Duncan (cause he's blind in one eye)

Steven Hawking (does it need an explanation?)

Iowa (cause he'll be incontinent soon)

Stain (cause you can call "come stain")

Dickizit (cause people will ask "whose dick is it?")

wolf 04-20-2006 01:03 PM

Sofa, because it won't come when you call it either.

Shocker 04-20-2006 04:57 PM

HEY DOG!

JayMcGee 04-20-2006 05:35 PM

I can only recount our experince in naming our original cats......

Crackers, 'cos she was...

Then we obtained Anco, as company for Crackers, and the current wife thought it would be cool to stand in the garden at night and yell 'Crackers Anco'....

Then Limit arrived.... was going to be called 'Limited' to continue the above theme, but OTOH three's the Limit....

...or so I thought till Mischief came along.... her mother was Trouble......

Hope this helps.....

No. She is not interested in begging. She will accept tidbits sometimes but since she can neither see well nor hear well, she must sniff out said treat. This is a welcome change from Junior, who can hear cellophane crinkle from a mile away and assume the position within five seconds.

Brian

BrianR 04-20-2006 06:57 PM

Actually, Shotgun is kinda a good name. It seems to fit somehow.

I'll post the picture (or a better one, she's camera-shy) after I get home Memorial Day. Unless I figger out how to shrink this 403k one first.

I'm learning how she communicates. I now know she bumps the right door when she needs out. She knows not to do this whilst I'm driving. However, she still insists on hijacking the truck. She now knows how to take it out of gear (and really annoy me). Before long I'll close the back curtain and leave her in the sleeper all day. That ain't cool ya know.

Hijack would be a cute name. I like shotgun as well, but it doesn't come out quite as smooth.

She sounds like a very lucky dog!

NoBoxes 04-20-2006 07:52 PM

CAUTION: If law enforcement stops you and asks what you have in the cab, DON'T SAY SHOTGUN! :(

Kagen4o4 04-20-2006 08:18 PM

that said.

Vet update

My vet says that she has corneal ulcers on her left eye and a luxated cornea in the right. He can't tell about the left until the infection clears up.
She also has neural damage that causes her hearing loss...that will never clear up so she's going to be about 50% deaf from now on. The tumour on her abdomen may or may not be malignant, he needs to do a biopsy to be sure but that will have to wait until next month. She has a bladder infection too but it's tough to tell because she is ALSO in season.

So, she is on two antibiotics, a soothing eyedrop for comfort and time. Four weeks should see her all cleared up and ready for more repairs! I will post again when I know more.

Still can't decide on a name but Shotgun is sticking for now.

BrianR 07-15-2006 11:18 PM

Update for those who care:

Her eyes are almost totally cleared up (of the ulceration) and she has no discharge. Her eyes are always open now, unless she's sleeping. UTI is cleared up. Her tumour has ruptured and doesn't seem to faze her one bit. She has had all her preliminary tests and bloodwork and such and will be going under the knife Tuesday to remove the lump. Vet doesn't think it's cancer and we are not having it tested. $135 for that? I'll take the surprise later, methinks.

I will let you all know how the surgery turns out.

In the meantime, she seems to be able to see a bit better now and doesn't bump into things much anymore, but this may be just "Blind Man's Memory", where she has memorised the locations of most objects around her. Her favorite places include lying by the A/C compressor outside, in the shade of a tree, at the foot of the beds/chairs and in her own bed. I'm betting that come winter, near the fireplace will be added to the list.

Brian

Great news, Brian.:thumb:
A little medicine and lots of TLC from you.
Got a name yet?

Crimson Ghost 07-16-2006 03:38 AM

Howzabout -

Phydeux - pronounced "Fido"
Stains - Just so you can yell "Come, Stains"
Noneofyafugginbiziness
Style - First name: Doggy
Bitch - Descriptive, yet informal

DucksNuts 07-16-2006 04:34 AM

Great news Brian!!

Cant wait to hear how the surgery goes.

fargon 07-16-2006 10:25 AM

I like the name Shotgun, just make sure her log book is up to date.

I guess there is something good at the T/A in Gallup.

Buddug 07-17-2006 11:01 AM

I have given some thought to this .

The corgi is a Welsh dog . However this particular corgi is a bit of a mix and has been found in New Mexico . Perhaps we should think of adding a bit of a Hispanic touch to the Welsh , whilst also thinking about this dog's personal glory and bravery .

How about MACSEN WLEDIG ? That name fits all the above ideas , and he could be known as 'Max' for short .

Ridgeplate 07-17-2006 11:53 AM

Clearly a trucker pup like that needs some class in her life.

Call her "TopHat"

Buddug 07-17-2006 12:22 PM

Never forget that top hats are to do with keeping flat caps even flatter , Ridgeplate .

Ridgeplate 07-17-2006 12:44 PM

I think they've evolved a bit beyond that basic use. Plus, the top hat is a cover for drive hubs (trailer hubs, too) so I thought the double meaning might be appropriate for a trucker's dog.
