Cruise to eat nutritious placenta

This is nuts.

Hollywood actor and Scientologist Tom Cruise is planning to eat Katie Holmes' placenta. It is the latest in a series of strange revelations by the 43-year-old 'Mission: Impossible' star about the child he is expecting with fiancée Katie Holmes. ...

yum
yum
yum.

Man, and I thought the Chinese ate some pretty weird stuff... I'd heard that people ate placentas before, but I didn't believe it.

Wow. Just wow.

EDIT: Cruise told GQ magazine: "I'm gonna eat the placenta. I thought that would be good. Very nutritious. I'm gonna eat the cord and the placenta right there."

RIGHT THERE? As in, raw? As in, right out of her? That totally takes it from "wow" to *vomit*.

wolf 04-25-2006 02:30 AM

Back in the 70s Ms. magazine regularly published articles about this nonsense. This is not new crazy shit. This is repackaged old crazy shit.

The article I recall recommended sauteing.

WabUfvot5 04-25-2006 02:42 AM

The hippies North of here do that kinda stuff. Most of them are more than just a little strange. Mr. Cruise has really done something remarkable since he didn't even need drugs to get this fucking crazy.

wolf 04-25-2006 02:58 AM

It would be the lack of appropriately prescribed drugs that makes him this fucking crazy.

DucksNuts 04-25-2006 04:01 AM

'tis very icky.

Friends of mine are a bit hippy-ish and they have planted the placenta's from both their pregnancies in big pots with plants that have significant meaning...no, no, I dont think they are those kinda pot plants.

Happy Monkey 04-25-2006 07:13 AM

Cruise was joking. But it is a sign of his insanity that people are willing to believe it with no problem.

Flint 04-25-2006 10:08 AM

I'm gonna plant a tree with the cord, but . . . wow.

Check out The Straight Dope on placenta consumption.

Elspode 04-25-2006 02:09 PM

I thought I was gonna be able to read all of this alright, but nope... :vomit: :vomitblu: :rollanim: :hide: :bolt:

:yum: California Cheeseburger :yum:

Somewhere I have a picture of the placenta from our eldest's birth. The instructor at our birthing classes told us that it was interesting and Mrs. Dar wanted the chance to see what it looks like. [It looks like liver] Mrs. Dar was rather busy at the time they were about to cart it off so she asked me to snap a picture.

That pic was a sure fire conversation starter when we were showing off the baby pictures.

jinx 04-26-2006 11:02 AM

My 8th grade science teacher claimed he ate the placentas from both his children's births. This makes absolutely no sense to me. I've also heard of women drying theirs, grinding it into a powder, and taking it in capsule form to treat PPD. This makes only slightly more sense to me. I guess if anyone is gonna eat it, it should be the mom, but I've never been that hungry... and I can't see how eating my own internal organs would cheer me up.

Beestie 04-26-2006 11:11 AM

Cannibalism is cannibalism. Even in Hollywood.

I would say it would be his belief in a cult where aliens are conspiring to take over the human species through the use of appropriately prescribed drugs. Oh and he is just dumb lol

Happy Monkey 04-27-2006 04:17 PM

It's a very nice cult if you're a celebrity.

rkzenrage 04-27-2006 04:19 PM

I'll just buy it for my wife to put in her hair... kay'?

That or Kabbalah:eyebrow:

wolf 04-28-2006 05:56 PM

Kabbalah isn't quite as focused on sucking money out of you, though.

I did a couple of shows at a theatre across the street from their celebrity center at the old Barrymore mansion... a travesty. Broke my heart, but got to see a lot of nutty stars coming and going.
They threw parties a couple of nights a week.

wolf 04-29-2006 12:58 AM

I just got the DVD of Wild Palms and started watching it last night. There is a thinly veiled poke at Scientology that's a major part of the plotline.

elSicomoro 04-29-2006 01:05 AM

Last summer, the St. Louis School District got tangled up with Scientology through their Applied Scholastics program. A couple of employees that went through the program as part of training complained, and our weekly newspaper put the shit to the fan. Whoops!

You can only charge so much for string.

Of course, I would have thought the same for crappy pulp skiffy.

They released it on DVD for consumers?! AWESOME. For the last 7 years or so I've had to make do with the two-VHS set I bought from a video store going out of business...

wolf 05-04-2006 09:42 PM

I have the video tapes that I originally "time shifted" the series on.

I was very excited when I saw that it was out.

Rhino.

PizzaMonkey 05-15-2006 03:13 PM

:vomit: :repuke: :repuke: :dead3: Is placenta consumption even legal?

SteveDallas 05-15-2006 03:36 PM

Why wouldn't it be? As a confirmed seafood-hater, I find it hard to imagine it's worse than, say, oysters.

Happy Monkey 05-15-2006 03:51 PM

It's perfectly legal, though I bet a lot of hospitals would prefer to dump it straight in the hazardous waste bucket, and may need a bit of convincing.

wolf 05-15-2006 04:53 PM

I suspect that it is on the cafeteria menu at many new-age birthing centers.

They scoop it right out of the birthing tub and into the skillet.

jinx 05-15-2006 05:47 PM

Not at the new-age birthing center I used, but maybe they just weren't new-agey enough. And they repeatedly warned me against pushing while in the jacuzzi.... didn't want any birth goo in the jets.

Tonchi 05-17-2006 03:00 PM

You would think that Scientologists would require that all placentae be returned to the Center for processing and extraction of fetal stem cells. Between their obsession with money and some of their other nutty "doctrine", they could have their placenta and eat it too. Erm, so to speak... :3_eyes:

romuh doog 05-17-2006 11:39 PM

Paper, plastic or placenta? You want the sack you can eat Mr. Cruise or the one you can take home. Good grief.

....snickers to wolfs reply.
