SON OF A MOTHERLESS GOAT!!! I mean - i love soccer!

Just got back from the ER. with 5 minutes left in the match i went up for a header and as i came back down i was planting with my left foot. somehow, whether it was the ball or another player i don't know, but something hit the inside of my left leg just hard enough to cause my cleats to grab and i rolled my left ankle completely. as i was going down i thought "how effin' clumsy am i?" then i heard the pop and i thought "how bad is this going to end?" then my ankle kept rolling and i thought "please be a break please be a break" then my chest hit the ground and i slid 3 or 4 feet and i thought "i hope this at least looked cool." then i rolled over and through squinted eyes saw every player from both teams standing over me with "oh shit" looks on their faces. then two of my players just held my hands down and said "don't move". and i thought "holy fucking hell - how bad is it." apparently they heard the pop from goal to goal and my ankle was at an undesireable angle. i was in some mild discomfort (that is macho talk for i wanted to cry like a little baby, but my son was on the sidelines and was really upset).

the good news is that it isn't as bad i initially thought it might be. x rays indicate no breaks. the ER doc says that it may have been a partial dislocation that caused it to be at a bizarre angle but that it is not dislocated anymore. by the time i took my pads and shoes off in the ER my ankle was the size of a softball. monday i'll see my doc to find out if anything tore or if it is just a super gnarly case of over extension. at this point it is safe to assume i'll be out the rest of this season which totally pisses me off. but i do have vicadin. that makes me somewhat happy.

My friend I hyper extemded my left anckle when in the USMC , after the third time a doctor that was trained in sports meds had a talk with me , "there are tendens that go all around your ankle ( mostly streight up and down ) , you have streached the hell out of some of them in the front , there IS surgery that can fix this , but it is not that affective , SO you will from here ever after have to watch how you walk and run because you will drag your foot slightly towards your little toe , so you should where hi top sneakers and hikeing boots , every now and then you WILL step wrong , the ONLY thing for this is ICE it for the first 24 hours , wrap it in an ace bandege , and apply heat ( after the first 24 hours ) , oh and asprin ( or the anti inflamitory of choice ) is your pain med "

FACT of life , unless things have changed since 83 .

lookout123 12-09-2006 12:12 AM

something tells me i won't be spending the rest of this weekend laying new tile in my master bath.

Good luck, Lookout. I hyper-extended my knee this spring and it STILL has not healed. I have to go to an orthopedist now :thepain3:

Owwww!

Welcome to the front door of "creaky old man". Injuries I had when I was 25 are now, 20 years later, beginning to call me on the phone when I am at work.

Relax, you'll be fine as long as you can get the cap off that vicadin bobble.

And how we "can't, anymore"

Ice on/off 20 minutes, elevated the ankle, make everyone else feel sorry for you, so they'll do whatever you command ("Hand me the remote", "give me a BJ") and stay medicated.

You'll be up and around in no time.:)

LabRat 12-12-2006 09:02 AM

OOOoohhh ouch. You definately have my sympathies. Anyone get it on video? :D How's it doing?

lookout123 12-12-2006 10:03 AM

no video which bums me out. i don't think anyone wants video proof that we aren't as good at the game as we used to be.

the ankle is stiff, swollen and sore. i can't put any weight on it yet so the crutches are still a necessity. it was a dislocation and the doc says that the "pop" we all heard was it slamming back into the joint most likely. everything is all stretched out of shape but the ATF is not torn all the way through so it will heal over time.

i've researched it and i figure i'll be out about 6 weeks or so then i'll brace and tape the crap out of it and try to make my glorious comeback.

bbro 12-12-2006 10:34 AM

Ouch!! That doesn't sound good. Although, I have very bad Ankles that I have turned every which way and never broken. The worst was when I sprained it and ignored it for three months. I had to get physical therapy for that one. I have hurt my ankles so much that in high school my mother decided to get me volleyball shoes with braces built in.....smart move!

lookout123 12-12-2006 10:36 AM

you really can't wear high tops in soccer so that is out, but i've found some braces designed specifically for soccer, so i'll give those a shot.

brief update for those bored enough to read. last week when i went to my doc for a follow up i found out that his partner is a sports medicine guru who consults for the phoenix suns and worked his way through med school as their physical therapist.
until i met him i was still on crutches as my ankle couldn't support any weight. he came in and spent a good half hour/ 45 minutes messing around with my ankle pushing, pulling, made it pop again, etc. he told me no more crutches, take a lot of advil and he designed a recovery program for me. the next morning i woke up and my entire foot was shades of black and blue - BUT i could move it. it hurt but i could also walk on it without limping.

not too bad considering i'd dislocated it 4 days before.

last night i went for my first real run on it. i ran intervals so i walked 2 minutes, jogged, 2 minutes, flat out run for one minute for half an hour. WOOHOO! my ankle held together! i went straight to the ice pack to limit the swelling and it did the trick. my goal is to play the next game which is a week from this friday. i will continue interval training this week and start working on my cuts and ball handling on saturday. i have hope that i'll actually make it back in this season.:)

bbro 12-20-2006 12:29 PM

That's great news! No more gimpy

Griff 12-20-2006 01:04 PM

I had something going on with a ligament in my knee that "they" wanted to operate on. Completely unrelated to this, I happened to be at a chiropractor, for something else, and mentioned the knee thing in passing. She had me lay down, and, literally, just manipulated the position of my foot, rotating it around for a few minutes. Something went back "into place" and my knee felt better immediately, although it took a few days for the residual soreness to go away. In the 10 years or so since then, it has never gone "out of order" and I sure as hell didn't need a surgery.

footfootfoot 12-21-2006 10:50 PM

sports medicine docs are the shit. good news lookout!

lookout123 12-27-2006 05:54 PM

update. i geared up as i would for a game yesterday and ran my body through the paces. other than being a bit winded i held together pretty well. i was wearing cleats and was able to make my cuts and turns pretty well in the grass. kicks from my left (injured foot) are a bit weak but they didn't cause me to fall down and cry like a little girl. well, not any more than usual, anyway.

the verdict is that i'll miss this week's game as a precaution but i plan on being suited up and busting my arse in 9 days. WooHoo!

lookout123 10-17-2007 11:54 AM

(I'm on a conference call so nobody bother telling me to get out - this is play time.)

Anyway, I let labrat know that I was bailing out of the training program for the run in Iowa next month because I took a nasty hit in a game a couple weeks back (beautiful airborne flip - real highlight reel stuff) that resulted in a lower back problem causing my left leg to go numb if I run too much.

Of course that doesn't mean I wouldn't play soccer... dummy. On sunday, my second game of the day, third of the weekend I made a sliding tackle, no big deal. Nothing spectacular or exciting, just run of the mill play. I felt something pull a bit though. By half time it felt as if the whole team had taken turns kicking me in the crotch. I finished the game out but the pain was pretty intense so I spent the rest of the day with an ice pack in my shorts. Not a lot of fun.

I've got some nasty bruising on the inside of my left thigh going up to where my belt rests. the pain isn't that bad now, it just pulls from time to time. I'm hoping it is just a pulled muscle and not a hernia. (i've had a couple of those) I really don't want to take the time out of life to have a stupid surgery.

Ah, I love this game.

Razzmatazz13 10-17-2007 09:38 PM

dun forget new photos for the bruise thread ;)

lookout123 10-17-2007 10:33 PM

no photos. the, er, um, swelling, might be embarrassing.

Razzmatazz13 10-17-2007 11:00 PM

fine, have it your way :p
