Tell me about your car

I'm starting to look for a new car and I've owned 2 Nissan Altimas in a row. I haven't done any shopping yet, but thought I'd get an unbiased opinion on ehat you like or dislike about your car/cars. I'm looking at a small to mid-sized sedan, good on gas and reliable.

zippyt 12-28-2006 11:24 PM

we have a Mits Outlander , hi 20's low 30's
my stepson has a VW Jetta , don't know the gas milage , but he loves it
In life befor kids we both had VW's and LOVED them !

wolf 12-29-2006 01:00 AM

I have a Mercury Sable, which makes you pretty much S.O.L. as they have been discontinued. It's not a flashy car, but it's very nice, at least in the highest end option package, which is what I have. Try a Jaguar S-Class. I think that's basically the same vehicle, body styling, interior room, etc.

CaliforniaMama 12-29-2006 01:32 AM

I have a Honda Odyssey, which doesn't fit your bill, but I do love the Hondas.

But, if I were in the market for a car, I would definitely start looking at the Volvos. A lot of money, but dependable and SAFE.

Our other car is a Volvo. 1981, almost 300,000 miles. We've even got a Swedish mechanic to go with it. He keeps it running clean.

The beauty with Volvos is you can buy used (more affordable) and still get lots of use out of it. We bought our baby in 1991 and have had it 15 years. Can't go wrong with that kinda history!

lumberjim 12-29-2006 07:59 AM

the 07 altima is really fucking sweet.

We've got three.
Toyota Echo- 44mpg 104k runs like a top. Very scary in windy, rainy, or big vehicle infested areas. I won't drive it in snowy conditions.
Subara Impreza- 29mpg (still newish prolly do better after break in) fun, fast, loves the snow.
Nissan 4x4 pickup- old high mileage rust bucket loves snow and mud. Somehow they hit that sweet spot where its a gas hog with not much power. The low power thing is actually an advantage for traction and it has a low range if I need to haul something heavy.

I have a Prizm, which is really a Toyota Corolla but was about $1000 cheaper. The name badge and a couple of body parts and some trim are the only real difference. It has been very reliable and inexpensive to operate. It's built very well.

They don't make Prizms anymore, but they do still take high quality Japanese cars and slap GM labels on them and sell them for less. Take a look at the Pontiac Vibe, a small station wagon that's basically the same as the Toyota Matrix. It's apparently the most fuel efficient car GM sells in North America, but has lots of cargo room. Made in a Toyota factory in Canada. I don't know a lot about it, but it's worth looking into.

I love Hondas. I had a little yellow CRX for years...it finally died :(

Now I have a 90 Olds Cutlass Supreme. Gotta be honest, it just wasn't designed well. Nothing about it makes sense.

I miss my old rolly up by hand windows, sun roof, gas mileage, good-looking, sporty, 5 speed Chiquita. If I ever DO get another car, it will be a Honda or a used Beamer.

I just think them ferners make better cars!

Bullitt 12-29-2006 08:57 AM

My Honda Civic has been great to me. Its relatively inexpensive, good build quality inside and out, and retains its value better than most other cars. Four door gives a good amount of space, but I would love one of the new Si's.

yesman065 12-29-2006 08:57 AM

Damn LJ that is sweet - Ah if I could only afford a new car *sigh* I wouldn't hesitate for a sec to get one of them or the Maxima. Thanks for your input.

lumberjim 12-29-2006 09:09 AM

what are you trying to spend?

Bullitt 12-29-2006 09:13 AM

My CRX was an Si. It flew like the wind. Used to love driving in the summer.
One of the Seinfeld cutscenes has the exact twin of that car. Something like this:

glatt 12-29-2006 09:27 AM

The CRX Si was a great car. I never had one, but I admired them.

Chrysler/Dodge has a new Sebring/Stratus sedan with a 2.4L 4-banger. It's rated at 32 mpg hiway. (heh, I almost made that 32 mph...)

yesman065 12-29-2006 10:16 AM

Looking at a replacement for my Altima - kinda the same thing - small to mid-sized sedan, good on gas, ya know reliable. I'm looking for a used one since new is outta the question. I may have to break down and get an auto too - bummer cuz I love my 5 speed stick ;). Guessin in the $5000 to $7000 range. I got my last Altima for $3500, and she still runs nice, but I'd like to get a newer one - she's a '96 with 130,000 miles on her. My last one had 218,000 when she passed away :( Man I loved that car.

warch 12-29-2006 12:11 PM

Two used Sentras in a row. Love 'em. before that, Datsun.
I'd stick Nissan.

glatt 12-29-2006 12:17 PM

Yeah. If you know and love Altimas why not get another?

xoxoxoBruce 12-29-2006 05:04 PM

Sorry, no help.

Well I think that a newer one is gonna be outta my price range and since I have my son living with me now I should get a "newer" car. I personally don't mind that my car is 10 yrs old, but . . .

wolf 12-31-2006 01:19 PM

You don't want your son to think you're uncool, or you don't want his mom to think you're endangering him by carting him around in that rattletrap?

My son and I have a great relationship and he knows I'm cool - for a Dad anyway. His mom knows that I'd never do anything to endanger him. In fact, her car is in a far greater state of disrepair than mine - but that has naught to do with it. She has dents on every side of her minivan - examples of her at least one accident-a-year driving skill.

My car is fine for me - I know all her little idiocincracies - she's in great shape! She runs fine, new trans as of last spring, no dents or rust, great on gas (23-28mpg) no leakage, and everything works. My current car is a 5 spd stick and I'm leaning toward getting an automatic. I now drive too much for work and in traffic it can be a pain to drive a stick. Also, Without making a long story longer, I am trying to teach/show my son the benefits of working hard and getting an education. Not that a car is that great an example, but it is something to which a 16 yr old boy can relate. I am also cognizant that he will be driving soon and I want him to be in the safest situation I can afford.

zippyt 01-01-2007 11:53 AM

sell him your old car , get your self something newer ,
I am a firm belever that a kids first car should be a beater to learn in , a stick shift preferably , pay for the first clutch ( yes it WILL get burned up ), then the rest is on him .

Oh and on switching from a stick to an auto trans , Carfull that you DON'T Clutch your self thru the windshield !!!!!!!!
TUCK that left FOOT !!!

Hippikos 01-01-2007 02:02 PM

My first car was a light blue Fiat 600. Drove various Mercedes until 1999, the ML being the last. Via Range Rover V8 and Touareg V10 back to the new MB ML (320Cdi). Secretly longing to a Big Block V8 US muscle car from the 60 or 70īs. A rusty old '69 Charger RT anyone?

I just put a new clutch in it in may '06. He and I agreed that he won't be getting his license till he's 18 even though he could have it right now. It'd cost me about $2500 yr just to insure him. Not really worth it at this point. Besides he isn't getting a car till he gets straight A's. When that happens I'll pretty much give him anything he wants I'll be so pleased!

zippyt 01-01-2007 10:37 PM

I Hear ya , got to set some limits , when my older sis turned 15 she got a car , by the time I turned 16(2 years later) mymom had had SOOOOO many problems that I got 10 speed , I bought my own first car at 21 , paid for my own ins etc,,,I drove that little VW Rabbit untill the wheels fell off , then fixed it and kept on driveing it for a few more years .

Aliantha 01-01-2007 10:48 PM

I paid $650 for my first car when I was 18. My dad helped me fix it up and get it roadworthy. Then I paid the rego etc and off I went.

Funnily, it was about 1 week after I started driving my little red cortina that my mother first called the cops cause I was late home (less than an hour). She didn't give me much leeway. lol Poor old mum. When I got home she made me ring the cops and tell them I was back. They laughed and suggested I make sure I call before I'm late next time so they wouldn't have to worry too.

zippyt 01-01-2007 10:52 PM

I bought mine and then 2 days later drove 1800 miles to California , for 3 years , ( I was in the Marines )
MANY adventures were had in that little car !!!!!!!

Aliantha 01-01-2007 10:57 PM

I kept driving mine till the gear stick came out of the floor. I happened to be driving along the expressway but in a bit of traffic at the time. My g/f had to hold the stick into the floor while I changed gears for the rest of the trip.

I sold it not too long after that, but it was a great little beast. :) 1971 MkII GT Cortina. Looked almost identical to this one.

Aliantha 01-01-2007 11:15 PM

My husbands car is automatic, but I still hold the stick for him. ;)

zippyt 01-01-2007 11:32 PM

Lucky Man !!!

Aliantha 01-01-2007 11:34 PM

haha...at those times he considers himself lucky. Usually when he sees the bills he doesn't think he's so lucky. ;)

yesman065 01-02-2007 07:26 AM

My g/f holds my stick too! Oh you were talking about your car?
