Is this the right place for introduction threads?
I'm a little lost, you see. :)
My name is Sarah. I like trying different hot sauce flavors, approaching strange dogs, and any rock song that uses the handclap sound. I dislike sitting at my desk, ringtones that have actual song lyrics, and avocados. In terms of more practical information, I live in the Washington, DC area and work in web development. I'm in my early twenties and taking a year off of school before going back to attempt to get my Masters and PhD in Rhetoric. During the time off, I am also studying dance, doing some volunteering for feminist/GLBT groups, and (yay!!!) getting married. You all seem pretty cool, and I have been looking for a place to talk about random stuff. Sometimes I am very longwinded and I have a tendency to take things too seriously, but I am friendly and unlikely to make too many annoying grammar/spelling mistakes. I hope that this is the beginning of a beautiful friendshipi! |
Hi Hime. I don't know if you've had an actual welcome to the Cellar, but welcome!

Welcome! |
Undertoad (The Management), Bruce & Wolf (The Moderators) tend to welcome people as and when they notice their first posts, but here's a welcome from me -a poster. Welcome!
I hope you stick around and get to know us. Introduction threads tend to wither and die here - we get to know people gradually, once they've decided to stick around. It's good to get some information up front though. How did you find us? |
Welcome to the Cellar!
Hot sauce and strange dogs? You've come to the right place. Spelling errors? Look out for Zippy - he's the spelling Nazi. :-) Personally, I've lost count of how many hot sauces I've tried but I keep coming back to Tobasco. |
I liked your intro, Sarah! Welcome. :)

I can't believe I misspelled "friendship"! I think it's because I wrote "relationship" and then didn't want it to look like I was flirting with anyone... except Shawnee 123. How YOU doin? :p |
Damn, just my luck...finally someone flirts with me and it's another woman, while mistaking me for a guy...an engaged woman at that!
|
Hello and welcome Hime, from another "new" Cellar Dweller!
|
Hime's getting a quiz.
1. Who would you tell first if you found out you were pregnant? 2. Sunrise, or Sunset? 3. Have you ever danced with the devil in the pale moonlight? 4. In one word, describe the color blue. 5. Ketchup or Mustard on your Hotdog? VI. On a clock with Roman Numerals, why do they use IIII as 4? 7. Who's that behind you? 8. Is it possible to be 'too sexy for your shirt'? 9. If you had to make a hat out of meat, which meat would you choose, and why? 10. What happens when you hold your [shift] key down too long? |

I object to question 7 in that it gives me The Fear.
|
Welcome to the cellar Hime. You'll certainly be given your ration of crap from the others here, so I'll pass. In the meantime, may I have your avocados?

is anyone still here that got the quiz upon introducing themselves? I might be a mush. |

No, I didn't get a quiz from you, you misery. I got a grilling from Slang after picking him up on his use of a word that's derogatory in Britain. Here. Quote:

1. Who would you tell first if you found out you were pregnant? I would tell my fiance, but it would probably come out as "um, sweetie, I have something to... uhhh..." "what?" "well, it's just that..." "what?" "You know how sometimes, things just..." "honey? What's wrong?" "well... we might not be going to DragonCon this year." 2. Sunrise, or Sunset? Sunset. Sunrise usually means that I stayed up all night doing something stupid again. :p 3. Have you ever danced with the devil in the pale moonlight? Yeah. He wants to know why your mom never calls anymore. 4. In one word, describe the color blue. Notorange. 5. Ketchup or Mustard on your Hotdog? No hotdog for me, thanks, but extra fries. VI. On a clock with Roman Numerals, why do they use IIII as 4? Because it's fun to pronounce it "aye-aye-aye-aye"? 7. Who's that behind you? I don't know, but I wish he'd quit staring at my ass. 8. Is it possible to be 'too sexy for your shirt'? Depends on the shirt. 9. If you had to make a hat out of meat, which meat would you choose, and why? Probably pork, because it doesn't smell as bad as raw fish or chicken and probably doesn't have prions in it. 10. What happens when you hold your [shift] key down too long? The keyboard gets really happy and then falls asleep afterward. |

I'm liking her.

Ans to No. 9: Ass meat......so then I'd have an Asshat. Oh....Hiya Hime. Nice to 'meet' you. |
The Great Clock (in the Clock Tower which houses Big Ben) the numbers are correct. This article lists the exceptions.
I had never noticed the 4 before. Quote:

Oooooo. Thanks for that link! That was fascinating! I had no idea that the use of iv for 4 was a fairly recent development:)
|
Correct -- Hime means Princess in Japanese, and Sarah (real name) means Princess in Hebrew, so it's sort of a loose translation. :) I started using this name online because the fiance (then boyfriend) used a Japanese name on a different forum, and I wanted one that matched his. People elsewhere on the 'net have assumed that it's an anime thing, but his name actually came from the role-playing game Legend of the Five Rings. I like anime ok but I'm not a really intense fan (don't go out of my way to download fansubs, etc).
Bruce, ha! :) No, but I do know a former Shakespearean actor from New Zealand. Tlingit Shakespeare sounds like a fun thing to write a paper on. |

Also Big Ben was built after the time the 2 bell system was supposed to have faded. Does Ben ring 2 different bells? I think that all sundials made prior to the 19th century used IIII and that IV was an abreviation for the god Jupiter is significant. |

Oh and by the way Hime, welcome...
To thread drift. It's part of what makes us the cellar. |
Howdy Hime, nice to meet cha'!
|
Speaking of roman numerals, why was VI afraid of VII?
Because VII VIII IX. *tears* I slay myself... |
