5/8/2002: Bomb robot drags dead suicide bomber

http://cellar.org/2002/bombrobot.jpg

I saw this on video and it was very striking. A suicide bomber blew up near a checkpoint as his explosives detonated "prematurely". In order to get the body without endangering anyone else, they use these bomb squad robots. And it's surreal. The bomb robot rolled over to the body, used its long reaching arm to grab the body by the leg, and slowly dragged it out of the open area.

Hubris Boy 05-08-2002 03:04 PM

Wow. He's remarkably intact, considering he just detonated a bomb. Maybe it was just a training bomb?

dave 05-08-2002 03:09 PM

No kidding. The pictures I've seen of detonated suicide bombers are... well, filled with scattered body parts. So he looks like he's in pretty good shape, overall.

I've seen these before as well - it's just routine to them. It's surreal to us because we've never seen it in the US before.

Undertoad 05-08-2002 03:26 PM

Actually, I can't figure out which bomber matches up with which story. I know this one went off at a checkpoint before the guy meant it to go off. There was another report that said that a bomber's bomb didn't even kill the bomber.

I don't know if that second report refers to this picture. So it may be that he's still alive here.

Undertoad 05-08-2002 04:06 PM

Update: this guy was in fact not dead when the robot went out to fetch him. When the robot started to drag him away, his other leg moved to sort of help his body along. This was the first clue that he wasn't in fact dead. He's now in the hospital.

MaggieL 05-08-2002 04:17 PM

There have been reports of some suicide bombers having their initiators go off without detonating the main charge...like that incident back in February where a lady shopper in a grocery store in Efrat double-tapped the bomber with her carry piece after his dud dudded.

Joe 05-08-2002 04:37 PM

where you from?

Excuse me for not knowing all the lingo, but what is a "carry piece" and what does "double-tapped" mean?

"Double-tapped" is the standard police and military lingo for the proper way to use a pistol to take someone down, i.e. to fire twice in rapid succession before recoil become and issue. This ensures maximum takedown power and accuracy.
I think a "carry-piece" would be the firearm a cop carries while off duty.

I correct myself again: it was clear from before the robot picked him up that he was alive. (New newsvideo showed more of it)

Here I lie,
All burned and bloody,
Lit my fuse,
It was a dud-dy!

MaggieL 05-08-2002 05:14 PM

A "double-tap" is two quick shots, usually to the head. There's just as much recoil involved as in any other technique as far as I can tell; no way can you get a second shot off before the recoil happens .The reason for the two shots is to make sure it's lethal.

A "carry piece" is just a concealed handgun.

A robotic arm with a rifle attached to it manoeuvres toward a Palestinian youth who was seriously wounded Wednesday in an attempted suicide bombing at a bus stop at the Megiddo junction, southeast of Haifa. According to Israeli army radio, the man was injured when part of the explosives he was wearing on his body exploded.

"Carry Piece" - the gun you carry with you "Piece" - slang for pistol

"Double Tap" - Shoot rapidly twice at the same target "Bang, Bang" - Sometimes expanded to the "Mosambique (sp?) drill" - A "Double Tap" to the center of body mass, then a shot at the head if the perp isn't down -

Both are taught for the following reason: The first shot often misses, or fails to STOP the threat NOW (You don't care if the perp lives or dies, you just want the threat to STOP NOW), the one to the head was added when perps started to wear body armor - Heads are hard to hit (they move around a not), so you start with the body. If the second shot hasn't stopped the threat, the assumption becomes "He has body armor on", and you go for the harder target

What a lot of non shooters (and even many shooters) don't realize is that hitting your target, even with a fatal wound, dosn't always end the threat ASAP. Lets face, there are a lot of ways to get shot that will kill you 5 minutes from now. The perp can kill you before he dies - that's why I said that you don't shoot to kill, you shoot to STOP THE THREAT, which usually involves killing the person NOW. This is part of the reason you hear about cops shooting someone 41 times, and getting away with it (you know the case I'm thinging about). Let's say its 4 cops. All that has to happen is ONE of the 4 to panic/make a mistake, and fire ONE shot. What happens then is that the other three cops WILL start shooting (hearing that first shot), and they usually won't stop till their pistols have no more rounds! I was actually surprised that ONLY 41 shots were fired, it means that at least 2 of the cops STOPPED

Almost all surprize police shootings have at least the first round miss. It usually goes into the floor about 3 feet in front of the cop - he's so paniced that he is pulling the trigger before the pistol is even up - he clears the holster, and fires!

Can we drop the retarded lingo? Please?

Look, we need to distinguish them from other types of bombings. The fact is, most bombings are "homicide bombings" - they kill others. Wow. Look at that. The United States is homicide bombing in Afghanistan.

But when the bomber kills themself in the process, and on purpose, we call it a suicide bombing. See, because the bomber is committing suicide, and this is a distinguishing characteristic. If American pilots were just flying their jets into al Qaeda targets on the ground, they would be "suicide pilots", not "homicide pilots", because we would need to distinguish them - and most pilots that are flying missions over Afghanistan are already involved in homicide, or the death of other human beings.

To sum up: the whole "homicide bombing" lingo is one of the most ridiculous things to come out of the White House, it makes no sense to call suicide bombings "homicide bombings", and we can just drop it.

While CharlieG gave a good description of "double-tap" and why it's used, it's now called a "controlled pair" by the military, due to bad P.R. with the original phrase. Much like "seek and destroy" is now a "movement to contact".

Of course the Israeli feds don't seem to have that particular hang-up...

Non. En Français, c'est "en anglais, s'il vous plaît?".

Thanks, Torrere! Always backin' me up... when I need back-up... and when you actually back me up... which was just this one time... ah, fuck it.

Don't you love it when the military gets PC? "Servicing Enemy Tanks" (aka shooting the darned thing)

They're suicide bombings. Sometimes attempted suicide bombings. And also usually attempted homicide bombings. But the suicide part is the distinguishing factor, which is why trying to change the term to "homicide bombings" is wrong.

That law expires reasonably soon. It'll probably get renewed, but if the NRA is on the ball, maybe not. Then you'll be able to go back to the double-tap to the chest and one to the head.

(though I've got some pre-ban 15-rounders anyway, that I bought just in case I decided to carry in the future)

I've got two pre-ban 12-round mags; altough my *gun* is post-ban it was designed to accept Smith and Wesson magazines. 15 round mags are available too, but the gun would start getting a little unwieldy at that point.

Yeesh, I knew someone was gonna jump all over that, but I didn't wanna make a huge deal of it, but what fun is not making a huge deal of things? :)

I said "I think the first half of Joe's post was supposed to be French". Supposed to meaning, yes, I realized French for English is anglais, not englais, but it's still closer than inglés.

My take was that since he didn't understand what language Maggie was speaking, he figured he'd try a few and hopefully hit on one.

"En anglais, por favor". Make sense now?

Joe 05-10-2002 11:24 AM

Joe wades into a language debate

I meant it to be Spanish.

I didn't mean for it to be rigorously correct, right down to the upside-down question marks that make me cut and paste from an ASCII editor.

The point was "what the heck did the person mean with all the gun jargon" not "check out my mastery of Spanish".

Yeesh.

dave 05-10-2002 11:39 AM

Actually, if you hold ALT and type

168

on the right numeric keypad and then let up ALT, the ¿ shall appear. I actually learned it from making faces back in the day, like this

º¿º

which is 167 168 167

Play around with it a little and you'll get it. I have all the important ones memorized. :)

Hahaha... reminds me of back in the day of Word 2.0, before it automatically did things like curly quotes and em dashes. Plus, being a chem major, I used lots of ° and ± and stuff like that.

P.S. How do you figure out your codes dhamsaic? I memorized the ASCII codes, in which you have to use 4 digits (w/ leading zeros if necessary). So ¿ is ALT+0191, instead of ALT+168. Windows Character Map shows you the ASCII version in the bottom-right corner.
