December 6, 2007: Robot patient

http://cellar.org/2007/robotpatient.jpg

The Japanese have come up with this one, a dental patient who is... a robot. With the use of this automatron, dental students can see what it's like to drill teeth on a real-life patient before they ever drill on a real-life patient. The robot is programmed to react accurately when the drill touches a nerve.

I'd drill that.

They should make a fat, ugly robot with bad teeth and bad breath. That would give the dental students a feel for what they're getting into.

oh, man.....

all the oral sex/real doll jokes are getting jammed up in my head......

Drax 12-06-2007 03:53 PM

A robotic Fat Bastard, maybe?

Sarasvati48 12-06-2007 04:06 PM

What did they do, buy one of them "Real Doll" thingies and hook it up with electronics? Boys DO play with dolls! Creepy...

Sundae 12-06-2007 04:24 PM

Why is she cross eyed though?

I stared at UT's post for a full three minutes, running over all the possibilities in my head.
Then I panicked and posted something quickly, just so I'd be the first one to reply.

There's a special place in Hell for hip-posters like you.

Shit, mockingbird sent me a link to this the other day that had a video with it as well...now I'll have to see if I can find that link in my history or something...

Wouldn't it be cheaper to just do something like this?

...or should we wi-fi the signal to the dentist's oral nerves instead :D

ZenGum 12-07-2007 03:27 AM

I saw this story on a Japanese site a month or so ago, but without the picture, so I decided not to post it here.
IIRC the funniest bit is that "her" breasts are equipped with sensors and she reacts (negatively) to inappropriate touching. Who says engineers don't have a sense of humor?

Don't ever go away again Shawnee, please.

That was my first thought, too.. she looks just like a real doll. Only, I don't think they normally have crossed eyes. Is that for the ocular surgery students??

Do you think it's because she's 'looking' at the dentist's face?

...guess that's another thing the dentist needs to get used to.

I don't like this post...it's reminding me that I'm getting a root canal soon :(

Cloud 12-07-2007 08:53 AM

Dunno if she needs drilling ... you'll have to probe her cavity first.

Sheldonrs 12-07-2007 10:17 PM

It makes sense. If you go to someone to fill your cavities, you want to be sure they know how to use their tools.
