6/14/2002: Biggest goldfish ever

http://cellar.org/2002/recordgoldfish.jpg

Happy Friday, and say hello to "Bruce". Bruce will be listed in the next Guinness Book as the world's biggest goldfish. He's 16 inches long, about as big as a domestic cat.

He was raised in Hong Kong and will have "ambassadorial duties" for China.

That all makes sense. The Chinese culture enjoys gold and fish and goldfish. If you like Chinese food as much as I do, you'll notice that many such restaurants have a fish tank with large fish. Sometimes the tank will sit at the entrance to the restaurant. There's a reason for that. It's kinda like a Feng Shui thing: the tank interrupts the flow of the place, helping keep prosperity in the restaurant. You also see the lucky cat statue (making the black power fist), and gold words framed on a red background.

Every culture has similar things going on, but they are so embedded that they are invisible. Think of things like the red and white barber pole. Or maybe the horseshoe over the door. The lack of any 13th floor in any US building. Does any of this make sense? No, but they are deeply ingrained in the culture. Weird traditions and superstitions are virtually everywhere.

I always thought goldfish were just baby carp... was I wrong?

Gee, there are plenty of buildings with a 13th floor - depends on the architect/owner of the building.

The barber pole is simple - barbers were the orginal surgeons - the red and white symbolize blood and bandages

Actually, they weren't surgeons -- they were coroners. What it seems he's getting at is beside that point, though.
Why still use this if it's obviously not the case today? Do golfers really have to wear the funny-looking pants? Not all do, but some guys are out there. And I doubt it's because of the foxy ladies they get.

I had always wondered what the deal was with those high-fiving cats. Now I know, thanks!

PS the goldfish has to be beyond annoyed at being shown OUT OF THE WATER.

funny pants

It seems that recently a handful (excuse me) of exotic dancers from JB's Gallery of Girls were auctioned off as caddies for a golf tournament. They wore bikinis and platform shoes and not much else. So yeah, the pants might just do it for some...

I can't imagine a dancer in platforms and a bikini lugging a full set of clubs more than 3 yards, and especially not a full round. And what kind of advice can they give on a short game?

BrianR 06-15-2002 12:40 PM

It seems that they didn't do the actual caddying, but were just "eye candy" and were there to raise funds for charity, not to play golf.

I'll take up golf if that's how it is now...

Goldfish are their own species--Carassius auratus. Carp are Cyprinus carpio.

No, they were definitely surgeons. What information do you have that they were coroners?

The Epsteins?

When I was at war with my housemate, I joked to my BF that I would get two fish from the petshop (about 30p in those days) and put them in her frozen chips. So that when she shook them out, she wouwd immediately think they were her fish! OMG! (Fish Called Wanda stylee)

He explained calmly and sensibly that the dead fish might affect her regardless of whether they were hers or not. I don't think so, as imo she was a sociopath. Then again, as time went on I often hoped she was only queit in the mornings (rare) because she was dead. So it takes one to know one.

Best carp recipe ever:

Quote:

The Only Good Carp Recipe

Cut a fresh plank of Sugar Pine large enough to hold whole carp
Place carp on plank and bake @ 350 degrees for three hours
Remove from oven and allow to cool/rest for 15 minutes

Throw away the carp and eat the Sugar Pine plank
Best goldfish recipe ever:

One goldfish (thumb sized or smaller).

One pint glass of beer.

Add goldfish to beer. Drink beer. For a more interesting presentation, use a clear glass instead of a red plastic solo cup for the beer.

And, yes, it *was* delicious, thank you.

I dug around and found a bit more info about the lucky cats here.

I've heard that the higher the cat's "fist" the more lucky it was. Anyone know if this is so, and if it is, why don't ALL the lucky cats have a really high reach?
