Had a great day here. 13 family and stray friends this afternoon. The only downside was the 250+ miles of round trip driving for me to go pick up Stephen and his fiancee and take them back home after. Yow.

The Macy's parade got Rickrolled...

Had a great day. Lots of really good food. Wasn't sure I would be able to eat any turkey, after seeing all the video with Sarah Palin and turkeys being assassinated right behind her during a press conference. But, I did. and it was DELICIOUS. I was so full, I really wanted to go back for seconds, but I just couldn't. Later on though I went into the kitchen and my brother was in there dipping turkey into the gravy and eating it, so I followed suit. and got stuffed again. I love Thanksgiving. :D

BrianR 11-29-2008 07:49 AM

I had Sphagetti-Os for T-Day.

My big pigout comes Sunday after I get home.

Sorry, Denver folks, no internet to let you know I was there. This situation will be fixed soon!

Pie 11-29-2008 04:02 PM

Mom didn't feel like cooking, so we wound up eating at a local fancy-shmancy resort's holiday buffet. Food was good, but it was overpriced and there's no left-overs.

Maybe I'll make turkey some time next week, after I get home. Turkey, cranberry relish, mashed sweet potatoes, green beans.

Mum wanted me to come online to wish all Merkins a Happy Thanksgiving.
Really, she was quite insistent.
You're lucky I'm on a limited budget, or she'd have expected me to send cards as well.

She was weighing up whether to send Eid cards to the family across the close the other day. I advised against it because she's only going on the colour of their skin (I'm pretty sure they're Pakistani though, and also nominally Muslims) and has no idea whether they celebrate religious occasions. I was pleased by the intention though - she sends Christmas cards to our immediate neighbours, so all she wanted to do was make sure they weren't left out.

Anyway.
Happy Thanksgiving from me too.
I'll think of you all bloated out later today :)

skysidhe 11-26-2009 05:52 AM

Happy Federally Mandated Day of Thanksgiving to God.

Frankly, I am thankful for every day ... good or bad, each represents another opportunity to learn, to grow, to be humbled, and other things that are best said on the inside of a Hallmark card.

Today I have made my second Gingerbread. I made one last night. I came home from work with a little extra coffee on board and decided to make it early. Great idea, wasn't it? Until the darn thing cracked diagonally. So I had to start over again this morning, used a tube pan instead of a nine-inch square. So, I have a bonus Gingerbread that I will be able to enjoy. I'll probably take it into work tomorrow.

My sister is in London. She went on business, but is now staying with friends. Her friend's husband is going to attempt to make a traditional American Thanksgiving Dinner.

I didn't know that Brits had turkeys. Or cranberries.

Sundae 11-26-2009 01:06 PM

We don't have God either.
But we have bloody good pubs.

Lucky sis.

DanaC 11-26-2009 02:35 PM

We have turkeys. Have had since the mid-16th century.

[eta] we also, apparently have cranberries. But they're a slightly different taste and size to the ones in America.

xoxoxoBruce 11-26-2009 06:20 PM

What makes you say that, Dana. I should think your's come from Canada, which are the same as ours?

Roast Turkey is the tradional Christmas dinner.

jinx 11-27-2009 06:13 PM

I would have guessed goose.... I guess that's old fashioned though.

classicman 11-27-2009 09:04 PM

Wasn't goose the traditional meal for those who couldn't afford a turkey?

monster 11-27-2009 09:11 PM

Goose is old-fashioned and more expensive than turkey. It's always been turkey in my lifetime...

classicman 11-27-2009 09:18 PM

I guess its a stupid thing I remember from an old movie. Weren't the Cratchets gonna have a goose till Scrooge got a few visits from ghosts?

monster 11-27-2009 09:21 PM

They weren't going to have anything as far as I recall. Your version is probably Americanized, though.... you just can't trust hollywood

classicman 11-27-2009 09:24 PM

jinx 11-27-2009 09:25 PM

"Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat. Please to put a penny in the old man's hat..."

monster 11-27-2009 09:28 PM

right. But it's an old old rhyme. These days most people eat turkey.

jinx 11-27-2009 09:32 PM

I believe you, that was just stuck in my head. As a tune, sung by Miss Piggy.

monster 11-27-2009 09:44 PM

yeah, all the songs are about geese. I hate geese. i'd be happy to eat goose if it meant one less in the world....

DanaC 11-28-2009 05:33 AM

In a Christmnas Carol, the reformed Scrooge sends a young boy out to buy the biggest turkey he can find.

We had goose last year. Don't often have turkey. used to when i was a kid though, it was just the way everyone did it.

My bro once had a Christmas job when he was in his teens, at a turkey farm. It had a profound effect on him. He hated it.

About seven years ago, we (me, J, my bro, my SiL, Mum, and the girls) had a huge turkey. But...since all of us (except the girls) had dropped acid, we ended up naming the turkey Janice (I can't honestly remember the route we took to the naming) and didn't eat a lot of it. Mum was already halfway towards being a veggie, I think that helped her wih the rest of that journey.

Clodfobble 11-28-2009 09:27 AM

You dropped acid with your mom on Christmas? You have a unique family dynamic.

chrisinhouston 11-28-2009 10:09 AM

I had a great time with my family at Thanksgiving. While the food finished up cooking in the ovens I played with the grand children outside. I let all of them try out my newly fixed drill press and practice drilling holes in a piece of wood. I also let the older ones try holding one of my 20 gauge shotguns since several said they want to learn to shoot. Being a grand parent is a lot of fun!

We had a big meal inside and then went out back and sat around a big fire I built in my firepit and ate dessert. The adults passed around a bottle of port and we toasted the evening! Great day!

Undertoad 11-28-2009 10:33 AM

For the first time I trusted only the handy digital meat thermometer, and ignored the pop-up breast thermometer that comes stuck in the bird. I took the beast out of the oven before the thing popped, as we were 165 degrees F in the thigh and 160 in the breast. It was perfect.

Can you tell us what "smoking bishop" is? Scrooge and Bob Cratchet sit down over a bowl of this at the end of of the story.

DanaC 11-28-2009 11:21 AM

Not something I've come across myself. I think that's a very old term. According to teh interwebz it's a warm spiced wine. So probably a little like a mulled wine.

funny. every single person I've talked to about their turkey this year has had great success with it. I think this is a sign of good things to come....a good omen.....god bless us everyone!

have a blessed day
