CELEBRITY DEATH POOL 2009!!!

I was thinking that this year, as a way of raising money for the tip jar, and to have a bit of fun, we should all kick on some money for the celebrity death pool. Not a lot. Let's say $20.

I believe Lumberjim would be a good choice to hold the money, or even UT himself.

If we each kick in say $20 for the prize and half of it goes to the winner, with the other half going to the cellar. It would be kind of fun.

Please let me know if you're interested.

The rules would be as follows:

1. All players pick 10 celebrities they believe will die within the year 2009.

2. A celebrity is someone whose name is immediately recognized so if the person is a drummer in a band none of us have heard of, it doesn't count and neither does "uncle joe" unless your uncle Joe is Joe Lieberman or something like that. If there are questions on the celebrity status of a user's choice, a vote of all players will decide whether the person is really a celebrity. A tie goes to the runner....or in this case the player.

3. If someone on your list dies, you subtract their age from 100 and this is the number of points you get for that person's death.

4. Half of all prize money will go to the Cellar tip jar, and the other half will go to the winner. If there is a tie, half will go to the cellar tip jar, and the other half will be divided amongst the players who won.

5. All money must be paid and picks must be made no later than January 1, 2009 at midnight in Hawaii. This makes the game fair so people don't start joining the game when they find out a celebrity has a terminal illness or something.

6. Picking people who are on death row does not count.

What do you guys think? Do you want to make this game a bit more interesting?

monster 12-04-2008 04:21 PM

No, thanks. I'll play the game, but not for money

lumberjim 12-04-2008 04:22 PM

yeah,...no munny.

And I won't hold anything I can't eat, pet or choke.

Radar 12-04-2008 04:23 PM

That's fine. You can make picks but not win money. I was just trying to come up with a way to make the game more fun, and to have a cool fund raiser for the Cellar.

classicman 12-04-2008 07:32 PM

Why don't "some people" just donate monthly, instead?

Radar 12-04-2008 07:33 PM

Where's the fun in that? Besides it's the most I'm personally willing to do. I might be willing to do more if he weren't grossly overspending for his bandwidth. I don't want to contribute to wasteful spending. It reminds me of paying taxes.

classicman 12-04-2008 07:34 PM

You certainly wouldn't know.

monster 12-04-2008 08:22 PM

if stuff isn't fun unless you pay for it....

Shawnee123 12-08-2008 03:38 PM

I thought it was a nice idea, Radar...regardless of the fact that it became a source of bitching.

'Member this?

True of anything, in my opinion. God some people are attention whores, or else money is a penis or sex substitute...not sure which.

I'm great. Look at me. Look at me. I'm wonderful.

Anyhoo...I will think about my list tonight...sounds like fun. It'd be easy to stick into a spreadsheet, if you're keeping track Radar. :) So, no money, but has a winner ever been decided in the past?

Aliantha 12-08-2008 03:45 PM

I don't get the whole idea of this death pool thing. It's really rather morbid to me. I don't like it. That's probably why I've never participated.

I thought the fundraising idea wasn't bad though although I would have suggested a lower amount. The SS limit was only $15 ffs. lol

UT...don't get upset about Radar being a dick. ;) You know he's always going to say something that resembles nice and then slam you when you least expect it (which is usually about one sentance later). It's just the kind of weirdo he is.

Shawnee123 12-08-2008 03:56 PM

Heehee...great last paragraph, Ali!

You know, it is kind of morbid. What if I made a list, and every single one of them died, in order even? I'd be like the "wishing into the cornfield" kid.

Aliantha 12-08-2008 03:59 PM

It'd be 'The Secret' at work. lol

Just don't do it!!!

That's all I'm saying. ;)

eta: Unless there's someone you really do want to die.

Now that really is all I'm saying.

Nope, that's another lie. You all know I'm not going to shut up no matter how much you wish I would. :)

Shawnee123 12-08-2008 04:02 PM

Eeek...there are some people I seriously don't like, but I don't wish even, say...Adam Sandler, dead.

Now if he's dead tomorrow...

Aliantha 12-08-2008 04:03 PM

Yeah, he gives me the willies too.

Anyway, this is starting to look like a conversation.

Pretty soon the 'chat police' will be here. lol

Quick, run! Hide! They might....bitch at us! lol

Shawnee123 12-08-2008 04:03 PM

Gotta go! :bolt:

I'd hire you immediately.

ZenGum 12-08-2008 06:50 PM

It is a bit morbid, but the reason I haven't gone in it is that I have little interest in celebrities and I have trouble thinking of ten famous people.

Radar 12-08-2008 08:33 PM

I'm really having a hard time making my picks this year. I have closer to 20 really good names, and I've got to narrow it down...

monster 12-08-2008 08:38 PM

I failed horribly last year. Celebs should hire me to pick them. I even picked one of my faves just to make sure it wasn't a wish list......

Radar 12-08-2008 08:41 PM

I've only got 1 spot left on my roster, and I've got at least 7 people who would be good to fill it. I'm scared to put my entries in now because they don't count until the start of the year and one of them might die between now and then.

monster 12-08-2008 08:53 PM

Prince Phillip
Margaret Thatcher
Dick Cheney
Amy Winehouse
Boy George
Patrick Swayze (aww )
...i have to get back to work, my other 4 to follow later

and for my bonus pick, some 19yo in Iraq who's wife gave birth to their first son on the moment he died.

Oh, and someone's mother on 9/11

monster 12-08-2008 08:54 PM

pah, if mine die before then, I'm taking a free pass and adding a new one :D

Urbane Guerrilla 12-09-2008 12:35 AM

Anybody have Forrey Ackerman in his pool for 2008?

Shawnee123 12-10-2008 12:36 PM

OK, think I'm ready:

Louie Anderson
Karl Malden
Olivia DeHavilland
Ted Kennedy
Hulk Hogan
Tara Reid
Oprah Winfrey
Walter Cronkite
Daniel Craig
Joan Rivers

Radar 12-12-2008 02:01 PM

Good call on Ted Kennedy. I was wondering whether to add him to my list.

I've got more than enough for 2 really good lists.

Ok, I'm going with the following list...

1. Abe Vigoda
2. Amy Winehouse
3. Billy Graham
4. Nancy Reagan
5. Kim Jong Il
6. Mickey Rooney
7. Kirk Douglas
8. Peter O'Toole

3. Elizabeth Taylor

7. Sidney Poitier
8. Ted Kennedy
9. Peter Falk
10. Dick Clark

Shawnee123 12-12-2008 02:03 PM

I'd have to go to the "dead/not dead" site...I had no idea a lot of those folks were still living.

classicman 12-12-2008 07:27 PM

ok thats it - I'm stealing radars secondary list!

1. Fidel Castro
2. Jerry Lewis

7. Sidney Poitier
8. Ted Kennedy
9. Peter Faulk
10. Dick Clark

Radar 12-12-2008 07:56 PM

Man it would suck if you beat me with my own list.

classicman 12-12-2008 08:33 PM

I'm plannin on it! loser puts an extra $50 in the tip jar?

wolf 12-13-2008 01:28 PM

I think I'm going to have to let my 2008 list ride since I went 0 for 10.

1. Roger Moore
2. Brittany Spears
3. Dick Clark
4. Paris Hilton
5. Donald Trump
6. Barak Obama
7. Bill Clinton
8. Clint Eastwood

Sundae 12-13-2008 02:54 PM

I'm going to have to add Obama this year for the sheer points value.
C'mon!

I thought nobody wanted to kick any money into the pool?

classicman 12-13-2008 04:19 PM

This is just between you and I, since I stole your list.

Radar 12-13-2008 04:39 PM

Wow, that's tough. Put $50 that I can beat my secondary list with my primary list. Ok, I guess I'm down. Either way the cellar wins.

classicman 12-14-2008 01:03 AM

that was sorta the whole point.

Radar 12-14-2008 11:01 PM

Anyone else want part of this action?

lookout123 12-15-2008 11:24 AM

sorry, i vowed to put all my money towards liquor, cigars, and hookers this winter.

Radar 12-15-2008 01:47 PM

I can't remember who said it, but I think it was either Pete Best or W.C. Fields that said, "I spent most of my money on women, booze, and gambling. But I wasted the rest of it."

monster 12-29-2008 10:54 PM

Prince Phillip
Margaret Thatcher
Dick Cheney
Amy Winehouse
Boy George
Patrick Swayze
Elizabeth Taylor
Liz Dawn
Fidel Castro
Woody Allen

spudcon 12-31-2008 12:11 PM

1. Barbra Streisand
2. Kenny McCormack
3. Matt Lauer
4. J.D. Salinger
5. Ernest Hollings
6. George Beverly Shea
7. Dolores Hope
8. Gloria Stuart
9. Karl Malden
10. Risė Stevens

Radar 01-01-2009 12:52 AM

Never heard of Risė Stevens, Gloria Stewart, George Beverly Shea, Ernest Holdings, or Kenny McCormack. Isn't the point of choosing celebrities, picking people that are well-known? Also, Delores Hope isn't a celebrity. She was just married to one.

Shawnee123 01-01-2009 12:54 AM

So, you're telling me Bobford Alexander Dooflebag doesn't count?

Are we just making people up and adding them to Wikipedia? Are we naming funny sounding relatives?

backatcha, buddy. try this one and take it from there:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gloria_Stuart

Most deathpools use the rule that it has to be reported natoinally in the star's country of fame, not "known to the egotistical maniac who first started the thread that year". Just because you in your little backwater of california have not heard of someone doesn't make them not a celebrity. I'm quite impressed you've heard of all my picks, actually. :p

Just because a celebrity hasn't been on Oprah, doesn't mean they're not celebrities. Also, spouses sometimes become celebrities by virtue of their marriages, Hillary Clinton comes to mind as a person who wouldn't have gone anywhere without her husband bringing her along.

Undertoad 01-01-2009 09:32 AM

Sure looks like a hefty dose of research into E-list celebs can take all of the Fun out of the Death Pool.

it was so much fun before

it's spelled "McCormick" btw

you bastards

Sundae 01-01-2009 02:46 PM

Uh-uh UT.
Don't you be callin me no bastard. [Looking for a talk to the hand smiley]

I admit, some of mine might not be known worldwide, but I am happy to be called on them (Clive Dunn, Norman Wisdom, Patrick Moore - all titled as far as I remember).

But I think it is reasonable to ask that the death of Death List members should be expected to be reported in the national press of the country of origin of the poster. Okay - that puts us Brits at an advantage in a way (as we'll have both ours and ours) but also at a disadvantage as we'll have less news of the health of some of yours when creating our lists.

I hope the matter will lie there. RIP.

Spexxvet 08-26-2009 05:02 PM

Scoring!

Shawnee – Ted Kennedy, Walter Cronkite

Classicman – Ted Kennedy

Spudcon – Karl Malden

Shawnee123 08-26-2009 05:14 PM

I just posted in the Celeb Deaths topic that I was saddened by Ted Kennedy's death. Then, I received an email from my Death Pool mod saying that he scored me 62.69 points.
