How good is your memory?

Mine confirmed what I've always known -- I have a terrible memory for faces!
I was random-guessing for most of the facial recognition portion, it was that bad.

Chocolatl 05-21-2009 03:30 PM

Can't quite figure out how to copy my chart but I scored:
8 digits on Forward Digit Span
69/72 on Cambridge Face Memory Test
13/25 on Verbal Paired Associates Test

I had a horrible time with the word pairs. I couldn't come up with any mental images to help me remember them, because most of them were verbs and abstract nouns. Erg!

lumberjim 05-21-2009 03:37 PM

yeah....like I have 20 minutes in a row today!

pah!

lookout123 05-21-2009 03:44 PM

I forgot what I was doing and it was over when I came back from the kitchen.

Clodfobble 05-21-2009 03:47 PM

10 digits on the Forward span
69/72 faces
13/25 word pairs

I'm surprised I scored as well as I did on the word pairs, I was randomly guessing on most of them. With the numbers, I said them out loud in groups of three as they were happening, because I know from experience that I can't remember a damn thing if all I do is look at it. (Said the words out loud as I was seeing them too, but it didn't seem to do much good.)

You were able to remember sequences of digits that were 5 digits long. Based on the results we have so far, the average person who takes this test is able to remember 6 digits.

You correctly identified 49 out of 72 faces. Based on the results we have so far, the average person who takes this test is able to identify 56 out of 72 faces.

You correctly identified 8 out of 25 word pairs. Based on the results we have so far, the average person who takes this test is able to identify 13 out of 25 word pairs.

Not so good. I would attempt to improve, but I'd forget...

I got average on the faces and the numbers. (Which annoyed me, because I made an honest mistake on the 7 digit level, and then I hit the wrong key on the second 7-digit one.. so it marked me down for six. I know I can do at least 7.)

I was off the scale on the words. Off the bottom, that is. I just have no capability to remember stuff like that with no context to tie it to.

DanaC 05-22-2009 01:05 PM

I was doing great on the faces until I realised I was pressing the 2 key instead of the 1 lol.

glatt 05-22-2009 01:25 PM

It froze up on me when I got a bit into the 7 digits and after it already had fed me the stupid words.

I'm convinced I was doing well on the numbers, would have been as bad as Sleeve on the words, and who knows about the faces?

bluecuracao 05-22-2009 01:25 PM

I thought I got all the face ones right, dammit. And while I knew I would suck at the digit sequences, I was very surprised that I got as many word pairs as I did--I felt like I was guessing for most of them.

I did much better on the numbers than I expected (higher than ave) but lower on the word pairs (slightly below average) and below on the faces...except for about a third of the test I was pressing the 1 when I mreant to press the 2. I am pretty sure it'd have been higher on that had I actually pressed the right key lol.

Bizarre that I'd score high on the numbers. I would have thought I'd suck at those and score high on words.

You need to type in more Microsoft CD-Keys.

glatt 05-22-2009 02:18 PM

completed it this time.

I did slightly better than random guessing on the words, but far worse than average. But I did really well on the numbers and pretty well on the faces.

DanaC 05-22-2009 02:23 PM

I got 8 numbers, 53 faces, and 11 word pairs. Frikkin 11!

glatt 05-22-2009 02:34 PM

I would have done better on the word pairs if I had just memorized a handful of them and guessed at the rest.

I might have actually done better with random letter groups. I wouldn't be trying to associate an actual meaning with them.

Not surprised - like Clod I was repeating them in groups of three. That way they are connected sounds, not numbers. Random numbers to be remembered properly (pin numbers for example) I have to use rhyming words for.

And some of those 49 must have been luck! I lost the ability to differentiate between them pretty early on. Not surprised.

I have a higher than average facility with words, and I remember meaning, grammar and quotations well. I'd say this tested a type of memory rather than affinity with words. BTW the only one I was genuinely confident of was Vanity - Essence, because I immediately thought Vanilla Essence! when it came up :)

As long as rocket surgeons don't have to memorize number strings. That one sucked. Reminded me of the days before cell phones.

Pie 05-22-2009 05:22 PM

Keep in mind that this has nothing to do with your facility with numbers or words, just your memory for those items.

I used a trick I've always had for word pairs -- make up an associative sentence for the pair: "I'm jealous of her intelligence" or "The world would be a better place if we honored the welfare of others"...

The numbers -- I should have been able to get past seven, but my fat fingers didn't help. :)

Clodfobble 05-22-2009 05:31 PM

I could have done better if the numbers went by faster--my short term memory is great but very, very fleeting.

DanaC 05-22-2009 05:34 PM

*nods* yah. Me too clod.

the numbers were hard because they come at you singly. i need to see them in a string to remember them
