What's your favorite gadget..
or newest gadget.
I have a firey lust for my 32g iPhone 3g s, I didnt like the first ones, but this model is the shit. I also just bought a Maxtor External Desktop Hard Drive which is awesome, backed everything up on it and now all my pictures are safe in the...err....safe. Whatchoo got? |
External hard drive is definitely good, Crackberry Bold (I just couldn't get the hang of texting on an iPhone), and this wine opener that doesn't pierce the cork, Hippie-insta-bag, Bore Snake.
|
For Ma's birthday in April, I bought her an ipod nano (4th gen, 8gig) along with some foldable dj headphones.
When she went away and forgot to take it with her last month, I borrowed these for the week. Oh wow. I had forgotten the joy of bus journeys with soundtrack. I used to go everywhere with my walkman, and later with my portable cd player. I even had a very early, pre-ipod mp3 player (a Zepp, which was very stylish and came in a little case, but was huge compared to modern players and could only fit about 15 songs on it :P)*. but i only used that for a short while. I haven't had portable music as a fixture in my life for almost a decade. I used to walk for miles with my headphones on, went everywhere with music. So, I have decided when Dad's money comes through I am going to treat myself to an I-pod nano and some good headphones (I hate those stupid little ear piece things). I can't wait! [eta] *actually, thinking bout it, it may have been a Yepp, not Zepp....can't recall now. |
I SO had to order me a bore snake. Thanks, Wolfie!
|
iPhone 3G and stereo bluetooth headset hands down for me. I'm also pretty partial to my cheap, but entirely capable, Acer laptop.
|
Oh Bore snakes Are the SHIT !!
I have a few diff cals and Bores |
|
I have the same one, lumberjim
I have that same Leatherman squirt.
Completely useful. Between that and my mini-maglite, I can get things fixed anywhere. |
If I had a Creative Zen I am sure it would be my favorite gadget.
and if a bore snake can be a gadget then let me just add a decent camera, the ds2 and the wii fit to my wish list of favorite gadgets :o |
Iomega 1TB External HD.
Amazing how much music one can store on the sucker. |

If i leave it in the wrong pair of pants or forget it, I feel totally weird. like the weight of it in my left front pocket has become a part of the natural weight of my body, and I am off balance if its not there. |
[snigger] LJ keeps his tool in his left front pocket [snigger]

the key to that particular multi tool is that it is 2" and doesn't weigh a lot. I have a couple of 'nice' multi tools that are very useful.... except that they're big an' heavy and you'd have to strap them onto your belt like a dickwad each day if you were really going to use 'em.
also: the scissors are the first thing you'll wear out. dammit....i'm ordering a new one right this minute. I want the Red one this time. |
Red like a Swingline? I believe you have my multi tool.
I also had a badly done "swiss army knife." Even bad tools are better than no tools in emergency moments. Amazing what simple physics can accomplish. :) |

Red like I wanna be a swiss army knife when I grow up?

Not much into gagetry but... this really works well for me. :)
http://www.goodhousekeeping.com/cm/g...trol-r6-fb.jpg I could add the digital camera, DVR and that small thing you place into a USB port. |
It would have to be my Crackberry. A few years back the DOD cut off all email access that they did not directly control. It allows me to stay in touch with my other work and responsibilities while I am gone for a day or two at work.
After that it would have to be my Husqvarna Rancher Chainsaw. I cut a lot of wood throughout the year. It has been a Godsend. |
This is gonna sound really stupid and behind the times, but honestly, I think my keychain data-stick. From someone who remembers mauling about the place with a box of floppies any time you were going to try and move some data...or the incredible, can-use-them-as-coasters, never break cds (thankyou Tomorrow's World for all your broken promises), or even worse, if you knew you would be transferring more than qtr of a gig, discoing the base unit and taking that with you...an ever-present, little plug in chunk of 8gig memory really is a joy.

the kids were watching a video tape this weekend and said, these are great, and they never wear out like DVD's do :headshake cue Dad rant on 'well if you put them back in the case after you finished with them, instead of leaving them lieing around' |

The new Zune is beautiful. One of my roommates got one the day it came out and I was blown away. Size, color quality, memory, battery life, touch screen, it's all there. A very serious answer to the iTouch/iPhone, IMO.
check it out.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNgAVbDWkZk http://www.zune.net/en-us/products/zunehd/default.htm |

Shawnee, just what does that thing do? It looks like a pair of scissors with a birth defect.

I wouldn't trust Lorena Bobbitt with it. WeverTF it is.

It's a salad scissors thingy. When you open it, it has two blades set apart, and you can cut veggies and stuff. Also, the end is a scooper, so you can scoop stuff up and cut it up more. I haven't tried it yet. I also bought a corn kernal thingy (no I don't know the real names, everything is a 'thingy') that will be really nice next summer when I buy a dozen ears of the best sweet corn ON EARTH and make a nice yummy corn dish. It would be good for a bobbit...if'n one were so inclined. |
my favorite gadgets
My Olympia SM 9.
My Alphasmart Neo. |
My '06 Shadow VLX 600.
|
I simply assumed that the guy with the gadget in post #31 would be treated by a woman with the gadget in post #32 ... :p
|
The NES, of course.
Why? Google "NES Girl," or "NES Girls," with safe-search OFF. (NSFW!) ;) (Just kidding on the last part. I love the NES, though, as it was really ((but not "technically")) the first big commercial success, in terms of at-home gaming consoles... paving the way for all the consoles we enjoy, today!) |

I live with my iPod Classic 120gig, laptop with a Mercury air card, Phillips portable DVD player (speakers suck tho, use headphones) and a basic Leatherman multi-tool I got for free when I subscribed to a newspaper once. Oh yeah, my handiest gadget, which none of you can use because it's specific to my job, is this little gem.
Man, I don't know how I ever got along without one of these. They make sliding my tandems a breeze! |

Yes, there are regulations on total weight and weight per axle. Ever see trucks carrying those big coils of metal, or rolls of paper? Getting the weight distributed on the axles can be a bitch.
|
I bought myself an ipod nano:) 5th gen, so has a little vid cam and an fm radio.
Got the same Phillips DJ headphones that I got for mum. They rock. They are light and comfortable but the sound's as full as the old-fashioned giant cushioned headphones I use at home. |
Shouldn't you be using that money to help the poor? Oh wait, you are the poor... nevermind. :haha:
Seriously though, I'm glad you're getting a breather from the wolf scratchings. |

Glatt, what Bruce said. On many trailers (but not all), the driver can slide the axles fore and aft to move 3500 lbs or s from the trailer to the drive axles and vice versa. Some trucks also have a sliding fifth wheel (the black, greasy plate on the back) to allow the weight to be further distributed from the drive axles to the steers and back.
Moving more weight than that requires a trip back to the shipper with weigh tickets in hand. Usually, shippers with very heavy loads know how to load the trailer to get the weight pretty close. The trailer tandems cam also be slid aft to make unloading heavy product safer by reducing the jumping (like a teeter totter) caused by a 10,000 lb forklift and, say, a 6,000 lb roll of paper. Trailers have been known to "walk" away from a dock that way, causing an unsafe condition. |
Amazing. So how do you move an axle? Seems like it would require a lot of brute force. And what do those little gadgets do to help?
|
Glatt You lock the rear ( Trailer) brakes( yes their Are 2 sep braking systems ) , pull the handle resleasing the rear axel set , and pull forward untill it clicks in to place .
I have Never done this , but Have seen it done , and had to fix the Damage when it is done on a truck scale . |
