Child Witches in Nigeria

Or, "Evangelical Christianity Strikes Again":

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/...n5392572.shtml

"Nwanaokwo Edet was one of an increasing number of children in Africa accused of witchcraft by pastors and then tortured or killed, often by family members. Pastors were involved in half of 200 cases of "witch children" reviewed by the AP, and 13 churches were named in the case files.

Some of the churches involved are renegade local branches of international franchises. Their parishioners take literally the Biblical exhortation, "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live."

"It is an outrage what they are allowing to take place in the name of Christianity," said Gary Foxcroft, head of nonprofit Stepping Stones Nigeria.

For their part, the families are often extremely poor, and sometimes even relieved to have one less mouth to feed. Poverty, conflict and poor education lay the foundation for accusations, which are then triggered by the death of a relative, the loss of a job or the denunciation of a pastor on the make, said Martin Dawes, a spokesman for the United Nations Children's Fund.

"When communities come under pressure, they look for scapegoats," he said. "It plays into traditional beliefs that someone is responsible for a negative change ... and children are defenseless.""

"The idea of witchcraft is hardly new, but it has taken on new life recently, partly because of a rapid growth in evangelical Christianity. Campaigners against the practice say around 15,000 children have been accused in two of Nigeria's 36 states over the past decade and around 1,000 have been murdered. In the past month alone, three Nigerian children accused of witchcraft were killed and another three were set on fire. "

Why don't they just stick to the Nigerian E-mail Scam?

"So what are your missionary dollars doing to improve the third world?"

"Nigeria will be witch free soon."

"That is a relief. Bad witch problem there. When are we going to start on our witches here?"

"Soon."

Africans (okay not all--it's a big continent) blame everything on witchcraft.

no, that's anthropology.

They've been persecuting people they perceive to be witches, by some name or other, forever. It's a shame the evangelical missionaries haven't been able to stop it, but they are hardly the cause. If we gave them all cars, would the witch burnings be because they're car owners?

Griff 10-18-2009 01:59 PM

Only if GM is encouraging magical thinking under the guise of Western style progress.

xoxoxoBruce 10-18-2009 02:01 PM

Well hells bells, GM's always done that. :haha:

Griff 10-18-2009 02:07 PM

'68 Camaro = magic :)

xoxoxoBruce 10-18-2009 02:11 PM

But for every magical one there were 10 posers. CoughChevetteCough

SamIam 10-18-2009 02:20 PM

We can't give them all cars. We need all that oil for ourselves. How about a few million tons of garlic and some silver daggers made available at every crossroads?

xoxoxoBruce 10-18-2009 02:26 PM

A UN sanctioned, Garlic&SilverDaggers for Oil, program... genius. :thumb:

tw 10-18-2009 10:45 PM

In Europe, witches were burned on the cross. In Nigeria, witches are burned on oil derricks. Says so much about the local religion.

wolf 10-18-2009 11:15 PM

You can't really blame Christianity for these sorts of things. It's really a matter of traditional religious belief that hangs about in spite of Christianity. And then someone points out that thing in Leviticus and it's all downhill from there, although "witch" doesn't actually mean "witch" in this context ... it's more like "witch" as in "witchdoctor," which is not the same thing, see?

Sad situation... killing kids for whatever personal gain these "fake" evangelists can acquire.

I'm pretty sure Youtube links are the mark of Teh Debbil.

monster 10-19-2009 01:12 PM

Do childwitches taste better than sandwiches?

It is horrible that anyone is killed for religeous reasons. Sadly alledged child witches in Nigeria are not the only innocent victims by a long way. Not even the only children or the ones to die most horribly. The whole thing stinks.

Ban religion.

monster 10-19-2009 01:20 PM

mind you, with stories like this

albino killings

it's no wonder they want to put a stop to witch doctors.

SamIam 10-19-2009 08:38 PM

The administrative officer in the village where she was re-housed, Erasmus Rugarabamu, told the BBC Swahili service that the situation had improved and no albinos had been killed in her home village in the north-western Kagera region in the past year.
Just how many albino's do they have in the north-western Kagera region? What? Has there been sudden plague of them? Is witchcraft the cause? Inquiring minds wnat to know. :eyebrow:

PS Monster, I loved your post. LOL

SamIam 10-20-2009 09:38 AM

Yeah, they better hurry and count them before they are all killed off. God, what if you were an ALBINO child witch who has recieved a flu shot? I'll never complain about my life again.

TheMercenary 10-20-2009 09:44 AM

Witch have been around for a long time. I know from watching the movies that the UK had a problem with them as well.

10,000 E. Africans are in hiding after new wave of albino killings.

Officials call it a “kind of marketing exercise” among witch doctors. Dismembered, an albino’s body can be worth $75,000.

Quote:

NAIROBI, Kenya – The mistaken belief that albino body parts have magical powers has driven thousands of Africa's albinos into hiding, fearful of losing their lives and limbs to unscrupulous dealers who can make up to $75,000 selling a complete dismembered set.

Mary Owido, who lacks pigment that gives color to skin, eyes and hair, says she is only comfortable when at work or at home with her husband and children.

"Wherever I go people start talking about me, saying that my legs and hands can fetch a fortune in Tanzania," said Owido, 36, a mother of six. "This kind of talk scares me. I am afraid of going out alone."

Since 2007, 44 albinos have been killed in Tanzania and 14 others have been slain in Burundi, sparking widespread fear among albinos in East Africa.

classicman 11-28-2009 08:59 PM

Why are there so many of them in that area?

SamIam 11-28-2009 11:05 PM

I agree. It sounds like alot. I googled it, and the instance of albinism is 1 in 17,000. If 10,000 east Africans are albino, that would give a population of 170,000,000 for the area?

Clodfobble 11-29-2009 05:10 AM

The rate is higher among black people:

Quote:

Africa apparently has a higher prevalence of people born with albinism with about one per 4,000 to 5,000 persons compared to a country like Denmark, with one in 60,000.

SamIam 11-29-2009 01:10 PM

Thanks for solving the mystery, Clod. :)

ZenGum 11-29-2009 10:59 PM

Albino Danes ...How can they tell?

But if an Albino can sell for $75,000 (which must be a bloody fortune in those parts) ... do you reckon some unscrupulous witch doctor would try to pass off a caucasian as albino? I would guess it has been tried.

SamIam 11-30-2009 09:57 AM

There are scrupulous witch doctors?

ZenGum 11-30-2009 05:05 PM

I would guess that some of them are completely sincere, scrupulous, and well-intentioned.
