Multipost Etiquette

Now I have engaged in responding to multiple posts in a thread with stacked replies, but I am curious as to what point do multiple consecutive posts in a single thread become excessive.

I thought TW had the record, but in this thread Merc posted 7 in a row!

Cloud 10-22-2009 10:27 PM

more than one is too many for me. I hate those excessive quoting comebacks and consider them rude and combative. Once people start doing that stuff I'll generally abandon a thread.

I have done two in a row, when responding to two posts in a thread with no common tie.

Cloud 10-22-2009 10:35 PM

yes, but that's really not what I'm talking about.

and I can't make the multiquote button work anyway.

monster 10-22-2009 10:44 PM

I think it's totally dependant on the content/context and anyone wishing to impose rules on stuff yet to come is silly -and that's the polite version. Preview your post. If it makes sense and doesn't seem rude/dosmissive when you don't want to be, go for it.

For multi-quote, click the multiquote button on each post you wish to relpy to (in the order you want to reply), then click the regular quote button on the final post.

Cloud 10-22-2009 10:48 PM

but I don't wanna! 'cause it's against my principles.

wait. . . I have principles?

xoxoxoBruce 10-23-2009 01:28 AM

Hidden lettering is even more rude.

sexobon 10-23-2009 04:18 AM

There ARE exceptions. :p

Perhaps chain posting is a disease and not a character flaw. I'm sure those who do it could find expert professional witnesses to testify to that.

what?

capnhowdy 10-23-2009 06:52 AM

I agree with Bruce. Hidden lettering is the pits. Why trouble readers with highlighting? When I see or suspect that I NEVER highlight. I just ignore the post. IMO it's about as rude as kiddies whispering secrets.
As for multi quotes... I really don't mind that as long as one doesn't quote several posts and only reply under each post with a 1-2 word reply. If you only have one or two words to say in response, is that post actually worth quoting? Sheesh.

ZenGum 10-23-2009 07:02 AM

Oh .... Sorry about that then, Capn. I use hidden lettering to enhance the delivery of a joke. Since it is easily detectable I think of it more like the loudly "whispered" aside by an actor to the audience.

capnhowdy 10-23-2009 07:11 AM

Carry on. I'm not the internet police. I'm just one user. No offense intended.

classicman 10-23-2009 07:56 AM

I think its best to use the multiquote option when the posts you are replying to have something in common. However, if there is thread drift and those posts aren't, I think it makes more sense to have two separate replies.

I like seeing invisible text - It usually means there is a little funny in there. I agree with Zen.

Shawnee123 10-23-2009 08:06 AM

Two separate replies is one thing. 7 separate replies is a bit ridiculous.

Shawnee123 10-23-2009 08:06 AM

Well, I think so.

Here's a graph:

(not a real graph)

Shawnee123 10-23-2009 08:07 AM

What do you think?

Shawnee123 10-23-2009 08:07 AM

Sorry, I'll stop now.

(will I?)

Pie 10-23-2009 10:19 AM

If I'm trying to embed a funny, I'll usually make it a light color other than white (so you can see that something is there, just not what it is...) Yes, I find it amusing.

cock!

xoxoxoBruce 10-23-2009 10:23 AM

Pie's got it right.

Hmm. I let web pages choose their own colors and the background for the Cellar is a tan color.

Cloud 10-26-2009 08:06 PM

that's 7 multiquotes in one single post, though (post #1161). and you're right--I don't like that and won't read it.

TheMercenary 10-26-2009 08:17 PM

No biggie.

Cloud 10-26-2009 08:18 PM

I'm sure you weren't too disappointed! ;)

you know I hate that argumentative shit, anyway; tho I realize many of you relish it. As you say, no biggie.

TheMercenary 10-26-2009 08:22 PM

No, actually I was just respecting you. I would love to have heard your thoughts about where it is all heading and what it is going to cost our future generations, in the end if it really was worth it and did we get a fix. It will years before we know and all to late by then.

Cloud 10-26-2009 08:24 PM

doom! doom! doom!

TheMercenary 10-26-2009 08:28 PM

Nope. waste, waste, waste.
