Hey Noob here!

Hi, I was just browsing your picture archives and thought I'd join your site.

Yay!

Great to be here!

(edited because I didn't want you guys to think I was spamming the site...sorry)

Undertoad 10-04-2002 08:40 AM

Nic, you wanna address this one?

Griff 10-04-2002 08:58 AM

I don't know UT, Perth has that piece of ash leaning against his bedroom wall, maybe its time for him to wield it.

perth 10-04-2002 09:11 AM

its under my bed, actually. and im at work. i can probably get ahold of something to deliver rich, chunky voltage, however.

XAB 10-04-2002 09:32 PM

Wait...I don't get it, did I do something wrong? :(

Undertoad 10-04-2002 09:42 PM

Long-term studies have shown that 95% of users who post a promotional link on the first post are spammers or other types of losers.

But that's cool! All you need to do to redeem yourself is to post a thoughtful reply to a thread other than this one.

Undertoad 10-04-2002 09:43 PM

^ And you did! Even before I finished composing my message.

Welcome to the Cellar, friend.

XAB 10-04-2002 09:45 PM

I posted in the Entertainment thread--sorry, I didn't mean to post the link like I was spamming. My apologies, I just thought that since the some of the forums on your sites were sort of similar, you'd enjoy looking at there too.

My apologies once again.

Let that be a lesson .. to me.

elSicomoro 10-04-2002 09:47 PM

XAB, I see you have met Nic the Neck, our resident hitman.

Welcome aboard.

Noobs

To promote a similar forum site in your first post is like showing up uninvited to a party at a neighbor's house and inviting all his guests over to your place for a similar good time.

There's nothing wrong with letting us all in on another good site, but the recommendation has more value once we know who's giving it and if they are in any way affiliated with the site.

If one is affiliated with the site, there's nothing wrong with including a link as your homepage in your user profile. The folks around here will usually check out the homepages of noobs who have something interesting to say in the threads.

[disclaimer: my homepage link is just a joke] :p

If you have a really, really, cool homepage and are bold as brass you could even put a link to your own website in your sig. But it better be worthwhile or there might be some criticism. If it's very well done, there will be much respect and admiration. :)

XAB 10-04-2002 10:03 PM

Roger that, sir.

Aslan 10-05-2002 11:58 PM

:) As a fellow N00b, I'm taking notes.

I guess it's a good thing I don't have a website to promote.

Hi everyone!

Nic Name 10-06-2002 12:29 AM

This isn't a place to take notes ... it's a place to make notes. ;)

Nic Name 10-06-2002 12:31 AM

Oh ... hi.

I'm new here, too. :)

While two people will take the opposing position, resulting in 14 pages of slowly degerating arguement, counterarguement with a gradually increasing level of personal jibes resulting in a verbal shitstorm with the political, cultural and artistic value of a plastic bucket.

So i've heard.

elSicomoro 10-06-2002 01:14 AM

It's hard being a newbie. I didn't feel too out of place when I first came here, b/c UT had just started the new version, and there were few posts to browse through. But when you come into an established community, it can be intimidating.

The Cellar, for the most part, is incredibly easy to get into. Why?

--The links at the bottom of every page. UT breaks it down real nice: What is the Cellar, its history, and the privacy policy.

--No registration necessary. You like to read, but don't feel a desire to post? Cool. I generally don't subscribe to a vBulletin joint unless it allows you to browse around. (Though I did register with El Saano...*shrugs*)

--Sure, there are plenty of inside jokes to go around...but it doesn't really take long to become an insider, IMO. A noobian should be able to come here to the Cellar, read a little, start posting, and feel like a member of our dysfunctional family.

And the most helpful tip I can give a noobian: Ask questions. Don't assume shit and post something that is going to make you look like a crackhead later. (For example, this thread)

Cam 10-06-2002 02:14 AM

I have to say that was one of the few old threads I've read that much of, I think I got all the way to page 5 before I lost interest in the argument.

dave 10-06-2002 01:05 PM

Ah. Wow. That was a fun day. :)

dave 10-06-2002 02:40 PM

A heart.

elSicomoro 10-06-2002 02:54 PM

*enlightened*

It took me forever to figure out what "!=" meant too.

dave 10-06-2002 03:26 PM

Programming parlance. "Is not equal to."

elSicomoro 10-06-2002 03:42 PM

Well yeah, I figured that out finally last week. :)

XAB 10-06-2002 03:53 PM

Crap! Late again!

Hello T.O. !!!!

XAB 10-10-2002 08:02 PM

Well... it's not a chat room, if that's what you mean.

I believe you'll find that, around here, the quantity and timeliness of the responses you receive will be proportionally inverse to the insipidity of your original post.

Slow as compared to...?

The busiest time on the Cellar tends to be between 7am and 7pm Eastern Time M-F. On weekends, you can hear the crickets. :)

Haha, thanks sycamore. I am just used to their being constant posting like Saano. It just seems like there's a lot of members, and not a lot of constant posting. Thanks for letting me know.

Sorry. I didn't mean to offend anyone. (Hubris Boy) Jeez.

Huh?

Did I sound offended? I didn't mean to. That's not what I sound like when I'm offended.

This is what I sound like when I'm offended.
