Kill AT&T

I hate them... for oh so many blood boiling reasons... which I will not bore you with for a change... instead I ask the following:

Is there anyway to move to another provider... and keep our existing phones? I have the samsung magnet and Flint has the Blackberry Curve. It isn't that I'm attached to my phone... I just don't want to buy a new one... oh... and I don't want to be stuck in a contract. I want a plan that gives me everything for less than what AT&T offers.

IF I don't get away from the bastards at AT&T I'm either going to stroke out or go down there and open fire.

classicman 07-08-2010 03:07 PM

Call verizon and ask. That seems simple enough. I hate my company because the new phone I just got a few weeks ago shuts off at will - ITS will. As in whenever the hell it wants. It also has less reception and is a PITA to use. IF I could, I would go back to my dumb phone that actually worked! This "smart phone" takes 4-5 clicks to do just about anything that my old phone did in 1-2.
So much for being so smart.

Oh and I have fat fingers which makes this stupid ass touch screen virtually useless. Its almost impossible to hit one of their microscopic little squares without hitting another at the same time. The only positive is it has a keyboard.

Sorry - Didn't mean to hijack your thread.
Oh -I got away from AT&T a few years ago. A friend is still fighting over $200 of totally BS charges with AT&T.

I think phone companies are like insurance and politicians ... they're all the same and they all suck.

Sorry.

lumberjim 07-08-2010 03:17 PM

Sprint is better than Verizon. Verizon is better than ATT.

If you're not in a contract with ATT you can jump, but you'll have to get new phones. We got a really good deal on blackberry curves.

I think there are people who can 'crack' a phone.... but i'm not sure of the legalities of that...or what support you would get from your new provider.

glatt 07-08-2010 03:21 PM

If you use your phone for talking and texting, and nothing else, you can't beat a simple tracfone. Far, far cheaper.

Gromitspapa 07-08-2010 03:22 PM

Do you have a contract with AT&T and if so, will they let you out of it and keep the phones? My understanding is some phones are compatible with other providers and some are not. You'll need to call the other providers and ask, unless you want to research it online.

A friend of mine works for Sprint and if I signed up through a corporate account, I could get more than the $200 cost of the phone back in a $100 port transfer credit and a $115-235 smart phone trade-in credit and have a 1 year contract vs 2 years.

Flint 07-08-2010 04:30 PM

OMG I am scared to hear about what happened. I am working late and turning my phone off...

And no, you cannot have a concealed handgun permit. :::puts husbandly foot down::: The foot has spoken.

Pooka 07-08-2010 04:38 PM

We don't have a contract...

I don't want to have to buy a new phone... I want it free. I'm also not willing to pay a fee to transfer my number.

I text and talk... not that it wouldn't be nice to have internet, but not necessary. Flint needs full service... internet, e-mail text and talk.

I don't want to call and talk to anyone... I don't believe that the individuals that answer your calls ever have the correct information... I believe with all my heart and soul that they tell you what they need to tell you to get you to go with their product... they are therefore not trustworthy. I like stories of personal experience... I find them to be more reliable sources of information than sales people.

Honey are you really working late or just afraid of me?

Pooka 07-08-2010 04:47 PM

LJ... you selling phone service... or you recently obtained a new phone through a provider... which one? Sorry... just looking for clarification... If you are working for one... I'd deal with you ;-)

lumberjim 07-08-2010 05:01 PM

How do you expect to get a free phone without a contract? that's crazy talk!

Pooka 07-08-2010 05:29 PM

Ok... you got me there.... if I could get an HONEST figure as to what my monthly bill was actually going to be... and not some BS that ends up being about $100 off... I would consider a contract... providing it cam with 2 free phones or the ability to use our existing phones.

Clodfobble 07-08-2010 05:32 PM

You should never have to pay to transfer your number, the laws on that changed in the consumers' favor a few years ago. I switched last Christmas from AT&T to T-Mobile. I got a Gravity 2 for free, better connectivity, a lower monthly bill, and got to keep my number. But I agreed to a contract. I don't know what sort of options you would have without one.

Pico and ME 07-08-2010 06:24 PM

Go to Verizon and ask a manager what they will give you to switch. We had att for 4 days and went into a verizon store to see about a phone with a better vibration (my husband needs it where he works). The manager asked me what it would take and I told him free phones (3 of them) and a discount on service. We got it and the phones we got are great.

Cricket can flash phones if it doesn't have a sim card. That means you can supposedly use another carriers phone on their network. I have not actually done this but I have heard about it. I don't know if it gives the same functionality either.

I use Boost mobile. No contract and unlimited everything for about 50 dollars a month and 10 dollars extra for international. I don't believe they flash phones but they do sell the blackberry curve.
Over cricket it is a better service as far as getting a signal when it counts but for a no contract unlimited service it's great. No hidden fees. I do miss my green samsung messenger. If my finances to not go south I might get the Samson rant which is similar.

Pooka 07-08-2010 06:56 PM

AT &T uses sim cards.

So seriously LJ... do you sell phone plans?

skysidhe 07-08-2010 07:05 PM

Then maybe you can unlock the phone and use the cheapo sim card in it.
Just 2 cents.

No, I work for a Nissan Dealer. I sell the sizzle.

classicman 07-09-2010 08:58 AM

not the zazzle?

lumberjim 07-09-2010 09:02 AM

that and this

bigw00dy 07-09-2010 09:33 AM

samsung magnet is a gsm phone...That one is stuck with w/ att unless you can find a carrier unlock.

I was a cingular phoner turned att through the merge. I have no problems w/ att thus far. But I am on the now old data plan. Plus my employer offers a 30% discount off my monthly tab.

classicman 07-09-2010 09:39 AM

very nice Jim!

Affording it isn't the problem.... its the principle of it all. I doubt Flint would willingly accept a trac phone... he is an IT guy... he needs high end and full service

Flint 07-17-2010 06:34 PM

ISP connection sitting at ~.25 Mbps ... Yay!!!1

Had to put Pooka on the phone to schedule a tech on Monday, I hear her saying "My husband is the IT Dept for a hospital--I hope nobody DIES before then!"

wolf 07-17-2010 09:07 PM

I know you don't want to hear this, but I've had good experiences with AT&T's US-side customer service ... the Indian Chick screwed things up something fierce, but a nice American (or American Sounding) supervisor fixed the problems in nothing flat, and gave me some bucks off the bill for my inconvenience.

I was a Cingular customer, and whatever Cingular was before it was Cingular.

Lamplighter 07-17-2010 09:28 PM

AT&T was Cingular was AT&T (in name only)

Clodfobble 07-17-2010 10:30 PM

I thought what was left of MCI turned into Cingular...

AT&T (in Basking Ridge NJ) was a company self destructing for decades. For example, they sold off the Long Lines division that installs cross ocean fiber optics just as the demand was getting hot. Anything from that AT&T was crap.

Eventually, they bought two cable companies to provide phone direct to the customer. Nobody in AT&T knew anything about phones. Nobody notices the wires could not do what AT&T bought them to do.

Eventually AT&T sold off everything two years later for half (about $70 billion) of what they originally paid. At this point, AT&T was only three months from bankruptcy. And not letting their outside Board of Directors know how bad the company really was.

Southwest Bell bought what was left of AT&T for pennies. Basically, all that was left was a cell phone company and the name. Southwest Bell renamed itself AT&T.

The name AT&T has a long history of meaning crap products - to the far fewer who actually knew technology. No company in the history of free market economics did more to destroy shareholder value than what AT&T did to NCR - according to The Economist. AT&T (Basking Ridge) was that bad a company. Notice how many consumers never knew it.

xoxoxoBruce 07-18-2010 12:50 PM

There's an App for that...

Or maybe not.
If you can't find an appropriate App for your Android phone, you can build your own. No really, seriously, you can.
App Inventor for Android, from Google labs, shows you the way.

Quote:

To use App Inventor, you do not need to be a developer. App Inventor requires NO programming knowledge. This is because instead of writing code, you visually design the way the app looks and use blocks to specify the app's behavior.
And when you're a rich and famous APP guru, don't forget us little people.;)

Pooka 07-19-2010 04:29 PM

I've decided we are switching to Verizon come hell or high water... I'm soooo done with AT&T this switch is for their saftey as well as my emotional and physical well being... .

How soon can you get home honey?

Flint 07-19-2010 04:37 PM

You wanted me to stop at the hardware store, so you tell me.

HITLER.

Pooka 07-19-2010 04:56 PM

Verizon... then hardware store... those are your marching orders

classicman 07-19-2010 05:36 PM

no Pete - No McDonald's for her - Shes on a special diet.

Pooka 07-19-2010 06:27 PM

And I've lost 23lbs... whoo hoo. We are making this a family trip.

Flint 07-19-2010 10:58 PM

I ブcking HATE this new piece of shit phone and the fact that I have wasted an entire goddamn evening on replacing something I was happy with. I liked my "old" Blackberry 10,000 times better. The 8530 is cheaper-feeling, and the entire front surface is one big, shiny smudge gatherer. I obviously like HARDWARE, i.e. keyboards, as I am using a Blackberry, why would I want these shiny, smudgy pseudo-buttons that you can't feel with your thumb? I liked the Blackberry "trackball" ...I hate the "touchpad" navigator. I just downloaded Google quick search...why did I have to poke around and find it in my "downloads folder" click and select "move to" my home folder? I goddamn downloaded it because I wanted the motherブcker, didn't I??? By the way, how is it a "HOME SCREEN" when I have to click the menu button from the desktop to get to it? The HOME screen should be the HOME SCREEN. You know what the menu button USED to have on it? The CALL VOICEMAIL option. You know what I still haven't figured out how to do, and I've had this thing for 2.5 hours? CALL MY GODDAMN VOCIEMAIL. I actually looked up how to do this on the Blackberry website, for this model, and the instructions didn't work.

This is not a ブcking TOY device for me, I am going to have to use this bullshit thing every day. I hate changing shit. I liked my old phone.

Flint 07-19-2010 11:20 PM

This is ブcking BULLSHIT. Now I have to go DOWNLOAD some bullshit "theme" just to get my normal, ICON layout back??? Are you shitting me??? Under layout I have "Zen" or "Today" ...no Icon. I hate it, I ブcking hate it. The keyboard is smaller, for basically no reason. It didn't come with a case. Why the ブck didn't it come with a case??? Am I supposed to just walk around holding it all day???

zippyt 07-19-2010 11:29 PM

yes

glatt 07-20-2010 07:40 AM

I'm getting a kick out of these rants this morning. Flint's is even better than monster's.

classicman 07-20-2010 08:12 AM

Damn flint - that sucks. I am NOT a smart phone person. I want my flip phone back. I call, I text. Thats all I need.

Isn't voicemail just holding down the "1"? I believe its a preset speed dial number. Perhaps not.

Undertoad 07-20-2010 08:20 AM

You mean the 9530, the Storm, the Blackberry touch screen phone?

Maybe that's why the instructions didn't work? ;)

I feel for you ネint, but new hardware always comes with some frustration. As I recall you had similar issues when you first got the previous phone. I'm wondering why you didn't stick with what you know?

wolf 07-20-2010 11:52 AM

Obviously the Verizon salesman hit him with a poison blowdart as he walked into the store and oversold him.

You didn't have to switch both of your phones. You could have happily stayed with AT&T and just switched Pooka, you know.

Flint 07-20-2010 02:26 PM

Had a Curve 83xx, this is a Curve 85xx. It was free. Didn't anticipate this being a downgrade.

Pooka 07-20-2010 04:09 PM

As I said last night we can go back and switch u back today... But I would rather have a track phone than ever deal with ATT again. So... It is ur choice.. Can u live with this phone or not... If u can't the onnly option is to take it back today. End of story. I want you to be happy . This new plan has much better coverage and gives us more for forty less per month.

Pete Zicato 07-20-2010 04:24 PM

Verizon's got to have some phone that works for you, flint. Go swap it out.

Undertoad 07-20-2010 05:00 PM

And that some phone is the Droid X.

Pooka 07-20-2010 05:29 PM

If that Droid has a touch screen I can tell you he won't like it...

Honestly I think the big issue here is CHANGE... he really isn't a fan of it...

Pico and ME 07-20-2010 05:37 PM

Pooka, same thing happened to me. I switched us from Verizon to AT&T and my husband HATED his phone. First the vibration mode isn't strong enough, then the ringer isn't loud enough and then of course nothing was where it was supposed to be. So I had us walk into the Verizon store to find a phone he would like and luckily we did and with a huge break and a better deal than AT&T.

men

Pooka 07-20-2010 06:05 PM

Its good to know it isn't just me...

I realize he was happy before, but it required me dealing with AT&T customer service on a REGULAR basis... and my frustration level has reached unsafe levels for my emotional well being... the phone was fine, they were not...

For $40 less we now both have data plans... the network is better... I have yet to find a dead spot int the house... and I've looked believe me... outside of... it isn't exactly the same and I have to set it up... I fail to see how this change is not for the better... other than the positives don't impact Flint.... except of course that there will be $40 more dollars in the budget to play with.

classicman 07-20-2010 08:53 PM

Indeed!

Lamplighter 08-04-2010 01:55 AM

Here is a bit of irony for you or maybe it's strategic warfare....

A hacker has developed a way for people to change (jailbreak) their iPhone4 so it will operate on G3 networks...
thus their owners can move to other (non-AT&T) networks and utilize Android apps on the iPhone4.

The government has given legal approval of this "jailbreak" software.

But another hacker has developed an (deceptive) Android app that secretly "collects a user’s browsing history, text messages, your phone’s SIM card number, subscriber identification, and even your voice mail password. It sends the data to a web site" in China.

Conspiracy theorists will say it's a secret strategy for Apple and AT&T to hold on to their market share.
But it is getting a lot of discussion among Apple developers.

------

Apple investigating jailbreak vulnerabilities
Quote:

An Apple spokeswoman acknowledged that the company is looking into a report on software vulnerabilities that allow remote control and 'jailbreaking' of its iOS devices.
followed by ...

SECURITY ALERT: Android wallpaper app that steals your data was downloaded by millions

Quote:

An app distributed by Google's Android Market has collected private data from millions of users and forwarded it to servers China, validating Apple's uniquely strong stance on mobile security in the iPhone App Store.

Pooka 08-04-2010 09:08 AM

AT&T was created by Satan...

Yesterday our internet speed was 1.24 again... worse than dial up... Flint please advise when a good time to transition this final service away from the the devil. I will make necessary arrangement... I know it will involve you reconfiguring stuff on your end so I didn't want to just thrust it upon you.

classicman 08-04-2010 09:41 AM

he he he - she said thrust.

abbyd 08-04-2010 02:53 PM

Where I live, Alltel is being converted over to AT&T because Verizon can't have a monopoly. Anyway, we'll be given a choice to switch to AT&T or go with another carrier at the end of the year. I'm trying to decide... I really like the Alltel service I have. so I hope AT&T is just putting its name on what is already good service and not changing anything drastically.
