fashion advice

Hello y'all! :D I need some advice from you guys. I'm thinking of sewing this dress to go to a wedding and wonder if I can pull it off. I'm 4'9" and planning to wear a four inch heel shoes. Someone said I'm too short and the dress will make me look even shorter. So I thought I'd get second opinions. Be honest but not too mean. :p:

Pete Zicato 07-30-2010 09:34 PM

We'll need to see a full-length shot of you.

Nirvana 07-30-2010 10:11 PM

You are going to wear a white dress at another woman's wedding? :eyebrow:

I love the dress but I cannot judge the dress on a mannequin it would need to be on you. :).

Clodfobble 07-30-2010 10:14 PM

I think that if anything, the high sculpted neck would make you appear taller, not shorter. It's a beautiful dress and I think you would look good in it.

But for the record, you definitely shouldn't make it in a white fabric.

monster 07-30-2010 10:37 PM

I don't see how it will make you look short. Style-wise. But don't go for white unless it is required for tradition. Darker colors elongate.

Tulip 07-30-2010 10:46 PM

This is how my figure will be then (I'm going by these measurements, wedding is in October). I was standing on a slight slant but I think you can see my figure enough. I was also wearing the shoes I intend to wear to the wedding so that's exactly how tall I will be. As for wearing white, I won't be. I was looking for a style to go by, not the exact dress. Traditional Asians wear white to funerals, so it would be a symbolic of death. Unless you want to curse the couple, wearing white to a wedding is a huge no-no. :p: Hmm...I made a bet with someone that I will go down to a 26" waist by the end of summer, so I may even be a tad slimmer than that. Well, that is if I make it. :D

xoxoxoBruce 07-30-2010 11:00 PM

Definitely make you look taller. :yesnod:

I don't see the problem with looking short.

I mean, you know, you are what you are! We're conditioned by society to think that beauty equals tall, thin, lanky, willowy but that's really ridiculous. I've seen too many beautiful people who were none of that.

The only thing to consider with this dress is if it fits your personality. Does it flatter your body shape, your figure, what you want people to think about you.

Nobody is TOO short. Too short for what?

You can be too short to reach a shelf, too short to be allowed on a roller coaster, too short for a pair of jeans to fit right--but too short to be beautiful? Never.

The blue dress looks great on you, and the one you're thinking of is not so very different. I'd guess it'll be a good look for you.

Griff 07-31-2010 08:05 AM

I think it will look great on you, have at!

skysidhe 07-31-2010 08:05 AM

I think you are lovely. As far as I can tell, the dress is great. I would be careful not to make the collar too long or too fanned out so it shows off your neck. Cutting it closer and shorter for a longer silhouette. I am sure you know that already but that is my opinion of the dress and how I see it on you.

What a silly and mean thing to say. Too short for what? And it won't really make you shorter, you won't get stuck like that or anything...

Clodfobble 07-31-2010 09:57 AM

I'd bet money a relative said that. Only relatives are ever that mean.

Thing is, you're only comfortable if you address what bothers you. clearly this bothers Tulip or she wouldn't have mentioned it. We all have our achilles heels about how we look -things logically we shouldn't worry about but we do. personally, my belly is my concern. I see people with much lumpier figures in much tighter clothes not giving a stuff about how their lumps look and I know i shouldn't either, but I do......

so too short for her comfort level? We all know she's gorgeous.

bingo

relatives and "best" friends.

Pico and ME 07-31-2010 12:04 PM

I'm short too. Tulip, but I have never really thought about clothes making me look shorter. This dress looks like it would complement a smaller frame and I am all about accenting my petite-ness. The 80's were horrible for me with all the long jackets, bulky sweaters and big shoulder pads.

squirell nutkin 07-31-2010 02:16 PM

Tulip, the dress looks great, and you'd look great in it too. On the other hand, you'd look great in nothing.

Tulip 08-01-2010 12:27 AM

Thanks everyone for your input, especially the ones about being short. I feel better about being tiny now. :D Greatly appreciate it.

LOL...it was my cousin. But I wrote it wrong, she didn't say I was too short, just that the long length of the dress may make me appear short. She's not one for tact though. She once told me I would look nicer if I'd lose 5 lbs. :right: The worse person is actually my mom. To make a long story short, recently she told me I look fat as this girl who's a size 12.:yelsick:

This dress complements a smaller frame? Then I'm definitely getting it! I think the 80's was bad for everyone. :p:

Thanks, Juni, who is 5'1.5" :D I don't mind being short too much until I have to put a stool on top of a chair so I can reach something.

:p: I didn't mean to write "too short." I think I was in a rush when I wrote that. But thank you for your comment. :)

Well, my height doesn't bother me the way it did when I was younger. I've been teased everything from midget, smurf, to being an arm rest. :p: Those fashion magazines always advised petite people to wear short skirt to lengthen short legs. I was afraid a long skirt may make me look only a foot high. I was gonna say a stump but I don't intend to be round when I wear a nice dress. :p:

toranokaze 08-05-2010 03:43 AM

Tulip I think the dress looks good, flowing elongate and I think the dress will look good on you. However, you make the dress look good not the other way around.

wanderer 08-05-2010 04:39 AM

Looks good to me. And as for height, I don't think that being a drawback of any kind.

Gravdigr 08-05-2010 05:22 AM

Four feet, nine inches. Twenty-six inch waist.

:yum:

Thanks, guys. I'm not quite at 26 inches yet, but working on it. :D

Pete Zicato 08-06-2010 12:19 PM

So, did you make the dress?
