Vasectomy Round-up
 

So, I've been thinking about getting snipped and have read that one out of three vasectomy patients have long term pain from complications. That doesn't sound like good odds to me.

I am wondering if you'd had the procedure and whether or not you had any complications or if you know someone who had the procedure and whether or not he had any complications.

Just for the record, in light of my previous round up thread, I'm less interested in your opinions on birth control in general, whether or not a vasectomy is really surgery or not, etc.

I did it. Short term post-op pain. After a week or so, everything was great. I'd do it again. I wrote a long post somewhere on the cellar about it and probably went into too much detail. I'm sure you can find it if you want to read too much.

There are still a few doctors out there that use a scalpel and require a bunch of stitches. Don't use one of them. Go for the no-scalpel operation. A little super glue to close up the tiny hole and you're all set.

Well, I've only had the procedure once, so I don't know what that does for your statistical analysis. But I do offer my one data point.

There weren't any complications, per se. There were several effects however. It's been a while... let me think.

There was the procedure itself. It was an outpatient procedure, local anesthetic. The cleaning and the shaving was weird. There was a small incision, no problem, but the electrocautery, while painless, freaked me out a little seeing and smelling smoke coming from my sack. You've been warned.

I got the pain meds, icepacks, strict warnings about activities, stimulation, rest, etc. I followed the instructions, and it worked out well. There was moderate pain. I've healed fine, and there's been no loss of function. The volume of semen has been greatly reduced, but I've never been in it for the money shots anyway, so, no loss there.

On the upside, no worries about pregnancy was a big plus. Also, since the birth control was now taken care of, Tink didn't have to take the pills and that was a big plus for both of us.

Recommended.

Interesting. I saw no change in volume. I wonder what the story is there. The semen is produced by three organs, the prostate, the seminal vesicles, and the testicles. I understood that the testicles contributed the least to the volume, but clearly everyone is unique.

shooting blanks is one thing, dry firing is something else entirely!

It's been 6-7 weeks from my surgery. I'm back to my physical stuff, but my recovery has taken longer than I expected. I still get an occasional ache but they are further apart and I expect them to go away altogether. I think my volume is down as well. I don't know if I'd do it again since my local wore off during the procedure. I haven't gotten to the payback part of the program yet so right now I only know the price of admission not how the show will be. (I'm also in day 3 of a pissy mood so ymmv.)

6 to 7 weeks and the show hasn't started yet?

I thought it was supposed to be 6-7 days!

In general, Brits are less prudish than Americans, but this is one topic where that does not apply (or at least used not to). I was SHOCKED in my first year here to encounter moms and dads discussing vasectomies in the playground whilst arranging playdates and the next field trip..... Totally a taboo topic in my experience before then.

My BIL had one and although I have no interest in hearing about his spunk volumes, I can at least say that apart from the expected healing process he suffered no ongoing pain.

Limey told us about someone she knew having the snip at our GTG - perhaps we've become more open since you left Mon?
Perhaps there is a connection between the two?!

I get virtual strangers to feel my contraceptive implant after all :)

Gossiping about someone else and talking about your own/partners aren't the same and yes -as I noted- it is quite possible that things have changed -the population has become more open, or the procedure more popular/mainstream, but you'll note my comparison was to the year after I left, not now, 10 years later. So the change since then is not relevant to the comparison I made. Of course it's also possible that you have a different level of openness than the majority of the population.

Monster I did wrote that I accepted it still wasn't everyday conversation and I wouldn't expect to hear about it at the school gate - but I must have overwritten it when writing about my implant...? It's certainly not in the post as it stands.

I didn't mean to suggest you were wrong - although thinking about it seriously, people do seem more open than 10 years ago. Then again perhaps that's only people my own age, which makes it less about the country and more about aging.

I'm back on the fence. I think I'll wait a while after the shoulder surgery before I go letting virtual strangers hack away at the block and tackle. The whole thing goves me the whammies. I don't know why.

Besides, it's not like I get all the much action.

or could you have them do it while you're geting a general anaesthetic for the shoulder surgery? And you'll get better painkillers too....

That thought had crossed my mind, "As long as I'm all hopped up on painkillers..."
But I keep reading about granulomas, and exploding epididymii, and auto immune response and I guess I'm not feeling lucky.

When the Wife and I first got married, she wanted me to get snipped.

So, I got as far as prepping "the area".
Which means shaving the groin.
And that's as far as I got.
The Wife decided that she might, someday, want kids.
Which fucked things up for me, as I can no longer go to that barbershop.

Long story short, as of December 27, 2010, kids are no longer an option.

Srsly tho, Uncledigr had it done, said there was quite a bit of pain, but it was nothing awful. No complications.

Had it done in 1997. Scissors, I think, and stitches, which came out prematurely. No lasting pain.

The weirdest thing was the tugging sensation up in my abdomin during the procedure.

I had mine about 15 years ago, no pain, no complications. It was of the "snip and stitch" variety. It's not that big a deal, really, and it avoids my SO having to take BC pills that she doesn't want (or need now:D), or having to use some other method.

I'm better now, btw, so don't let Mr. Negativity de-rail progress.

I dunno if this counts, but a friend had a bilateral orchidectomy done and while it's a bit more than just the snip and tuck, she told me it felt like being hit with a sack of potatoes down there.
