...do you wish it was written about you?

SamIam 03-11-2011 11:39 PM

"Good Night Ladies." I have to get up early in the morning.

skysidhe 03-12-2011 12:55 AM

of course he could sing the phone book, to me and I wouldn't mind.
:luv:

Don't any body scoff. I've loved Elton since back in the day when we both were skinny. I bought the album, where he was maybe 17-21, On the cover he was sitting on green grass in the sunshine wearing a white or white and black stripped hat. I was about 13.

sky, aside from the Elton John stuff, you and I seem to have similar taste in music.

I have to think about this question.

skysidhe 03-12-2011 12:47 PM

I thought it was a slightly difficult challenge because some of the lyrics in love songs cast blame or something else you've got to feel introspective about, if the song was really really about yourself.

jimhelm 03-12-2011 12:52 PM

I can't come up with one....

Rhianne 03-12-2011 01:39 PM

I was going to post something by Loudon Wainwright.

Won't bother now...(*sulks off in a huff*)

Clodfobble 03-12-2011 02:06 PM

I like the overall sentiment of "Hey There Delilah." Except in reality I'd never date a guitarist, so I guess the song couldn't be about me after all.

Sulk over!

I used to travel a lot with work and was often away from home for weeks at a time so it might have been nice if this song had been written for me. It was written by Swill Odgers if The Men They Couldn't Hang:

Parted From You

An endless road of breathtaking sights
Another town, another night
Where telephone bills replace bottles of pills
Love hurts and your voice thrills

Now all this frustration brings a feeling of pain
When I put down the phone I want to call you again
When I write you a letter, when I send you a card
I'm soft, my body grows hard

Mountains and rivers and beautiful views
Mean nothing to me, parted from you
Sunshine or snow it all becomes grey
As I think of you while I'm away

Days become weeks, or so it seems
But night's a release, with you in my dreams
But I wake, you're away and I think of how far
I feel like I'm trapped in a jar

And mountains and rivers and beautiful views
Mean nothing to me, parted from you
Sunshine or snow it all becomes grey
As I think of you while I'm away

Dido's first album reminded me what love songs are.

you guessed right!

Sundae 03-22-2011 03:17 PM

Sky, I loved Sixpence None the Richer, but it was a bit fey.
Fits I suppose :)

UT - I really felt Dido's songs, but I could never fit them to me.
Male: female difference I suppose.

I submit two:

When You Come - Crowded House.
I just love the imagery. It is a love song. Just not a soppy one.
YouTube'd because it was an album track. Forgive them, it was filmed in the 80s.

Quote:

When you come across the sea
Me like a beacon, guiding you to safety
The sooner the better now
And when you come
The hills will breathe like a baby
Pulled up, heaving from the bottom of the ocean
The sooner the better now
And when you come to cover me
With your kisses
Fresh like a daisy chained up in a lion's den
I'll know you by the thunderclap
Pouring like a rain of blood to my emotions
And that is why
I stumble to my knees

And why, underneath the Heavens
With the stars burning and exploding
I know why I could never let you down
When you come

When you come like an iceberg float in darkness
Smashing my hull send me to the bottom of the sea
I should know you better now
And when you come, your majesty to entrap me
Prince of light receding
The sooner the better now
And when you come to cover me
With your kisses hard like armour
The sooner the better now
I'll know you by the thunderclap
Pouring like a rain of blood to my emotions, hey
And that is why
I stumble to my knees

And why underneath the Heavens
With the stars burning and exploding
I know why I could never let you down

She came out of the water
Into my horizon
Like a cumulo nimbus
Coming in from the distance
Burning and exploding
Burning and exploding
Like a slow volcano
When you come
Cover the ground with ashes, with ashes
Baby, when you come
Nothing changes, now
When you come
Burning and exploding
When you come
When you come
Wonderdrug - Jann Arden.
The clip starts with someone other than her singing. The real song kicks in about 30 seconds.

Quote:

Be my lover, be my baby, be my wonderdrug
Be my flower, weeping silver tears on a rusted heart
Don't say a word, just let me kiss it all away
No more sorrow, no more sadness no more

Be my lover, baby you just got to want me
I don't know, can't think, not even breathing
Be my blood stained suit of armour, be my everything
Don't say you love me 'cause I don't care
I love you more than you will ever know

No more worry, no more trouble, no more sadness
And no more sorrow
Oh my heart shines when you kiss my mouth
What a sweet surprise
And I stop cold when you're in the room
And you look my way
Say my name, say my name

Be my lover. Be my, be my baby
Be my wonderdrug my wonderdrug
my wonderdrug
Be my, be my baby
Be my lover
Be my wonderdrug
Both sets of lyrics quoted because it's a lot about the lyrics to me.

skysidhe 03-22-2011 05:58 PM

I forgot about them and that song. Great song.

glatt 03-23-2011 08:56 AM

Most love songs seem to be about longing for what you can't have.

For example, something like Nothing Compares 2U is a heart wrenching song about unrequited love. If that were written about me, I'd be freaked out that some psycho was going to kill herself over me. I don't want that. Where are the passionate love songs about happy couples who are together? It's boring subject matter, so I can't think of any examples.

Wonderful Tonight is a good song, except the sentiment was kind of ruined for me when I read that he wrote it when he was waiting forever for his partner to get ready one evening before going out.

I got nothing.

Tch! Half of my favourites I can't ask to have been written about me because they're about established relationships!

The other half are about the passionate throngs of new love. I don't want that.
Anyone can fall head over heels and promise eternal love. I don't trust that any more.

So I scrounged out two that are just about love imo.
It's small beer.
Love songs are for the young and happy I figure, or the settled.

monster 03-23-2011 09:56 PM

what about this, glatt?

Who wouldn't want this to be about them?

glatt 03-24-2011 07:54 AM

It's pretty sappy and repetitive, but the best I can think of is Van Morrison's Have I Told You Lately.

infinite monkey 03-24-2011 08:04 AM

monster, you reminded me of this:

I love this song. The lyrics and the music.

Anyone who ever held you
Would tell you the way I'm feeling
Anyone who ever wanted you
Would try to tell you what I feel inside
The only thing I ever wanted
Was the feeling that you ain't faking
The only one you ever thought about
Wait a minute can't you see that I

I wanna fall from the stars
Straight into your arms
I, I feel you
I hope you comprehend

monster 03-24-2011 08:53 AM

It was Stars playing that reminded me of For Your Babies.

infinite monkey 03-24-2011 09:26 AM

I hadn't heard it for YEARS. Then I was in Los Angeles, walking around, found a drugstore, went in...it was on the MUZAC (only it was the real song, MUZAC has improved.) Since then I've noticed I hear it a lot at the grocery or in drugstores.

Sundae 03-24-2011 03:36 PM

I resemble the remark about Chasing Cars.
That song makes me go all squishy.

My luck is that I'll end being associated with this:
