I was reading through this forum and you guys are just hilarious great job on that guy. I found a few web sites that you would all just love. And these are web designers they get paid for this!!!

Now I don't want to get drawn into the slanging match (although it is remarkably funny to read) taking a look at these two sites worries me.

<i>Who</i> would pay for these types of services, not only are the "demo" pages for each of the companies utterly pathetic but so are the sites that these people design.

And $500 for five pages? then $50 an hour after that? are they really trying to tell me that the TeddyBear sight took a minimum of ten hours work?

Golly, I think I'm in the wrong job. The only reason I don't do web design is because I don't think I'm good enough :-/

Hey! My site was on Geocities once. Shit, I was just able to yank it off Tripod late last year (Thanks Dave! You're my hero!)

Back in the day, it was nothing for me to spend 13 or 14 hours on the computer, doing stuff with my site. But when I created the War Room page last week, that took about an hour or two.

Shit...from local to international business...I'm on a roll here. :)

The amount one can charge is much more closely tied to sales and marketing than to quality of work.

It bothers me to a certain degree the lack of "quality" sites there are out there, which are, either through poor design, poor choise of colours, poor coding or the fault of the creator generally unusable.

I often end up doing web-design for work, and as the company is linux based with only the one IE box in the entire building I take great care (and I suppose pride) in making sure that everything I do is viewable by Windows and Linux users. True it takes a lot longer but I test everything in IE (5.5 / 6 ) Mozilla, NS6 (which is mozilla), Konquerer and Opera.

Came across www.argos.co.uk the other day which says "you are using Gecko please try a different browser", which seemed to be their response for the phrase "this works in IE only". *If* the company that did their page for them was doing their job properly I wouldn't have seen that ... Coupled with the fact that this seemed to be pointless anyhow as forcing the browser string makes the site work fine and dandy.

I hate to think what the owners of the two sites above would do if they ever ventured into the world of decent design and started having to deal with browsers that support standards (or in the case of IE, don't)

IM(NS)HO, any "Web-Design" firm that can't be bothered to check it's <b>own</b> site for standards compliance should be shot.

There is a subtle difference though Syc, you aren't trying to sell your efforts. If you were I'm sure you (like myself) would pay a little more attention to what we were doing.

When our collective half-assed (I know my site is) efforts far surpass theirs when they are selling those skills, well, it's a different matter isn't it ?

Consider all the small business people out there that keep hearing "e-commerce is the future" and haven't got a clue.
They're working 80 hours a week to survive and don't know where to turn. They're at the mercy of Sally's neighbor's son-in-law. Even if they don't like the result, they're in $500 and being told "awesome, you got a great deal" Damn shame.

It is really is a shame that they rip off small businesses like that and really they don't even come close to getting any type of return for their effort in getting a website done. Shame on these people for ripping off business. Do you think that these so called web designers acctually think they have a good product.

From the look of the websites some of these "web designers" put up for themselves, yes. They must think they're doing a good job. It appears the clueless are leading the clueless.

Man, I just looked at that site, and, not only does it Suck the Big One, but the author had the audacity to include a link to THIS PAGE, in which the alleged writer admits that she failed a few basic writing/journalism/communication classes in college. The most outrageous part is that she bitches and moans that this travesty is what kept her out of graduate school, while one glance at her website is all that is needed to justify her receipt of the dreaded 'thin letter.'

I may not know HTML from CSS, but I can conjugate verbs and spell correctly! Perhaps I'm also in the wrong profession! (I hope they don't confer degrees in anything important, such as brain surgery, at Point State Park College, if this is what a Magna Cum Laude churns out.

Point State Park College would be where you'd go if you didn't get in to Pitt. Which is where you go if you didn't get into Penn State.

She's trying to say she doesn't remember failing anything, which immediately sounds suspicious to me. And on top of that, in most majors and at most schools, you have to do a credit audit in your final year of school, in which you basically see your transcript, and make sure you've taken all the right classes.

Failing stuff does not keep you out of gradual school, especially if you are one of those "returning" students who can claim "life experience" to make up for a variety of deficits in other areas.

However, if her academic performance was as described (somewhere between iffy and lacking) there is NO WAY she could have graduated magna cum anything ... unless she had a 'special' friend in the transcript office to take care of these little problems in the calculation of GPA for her.

But you know what ... I don't actually give a shit. Her site sucks, no matter what her academic experience.

Well, I actually knew how sucky PSC was, having a lovely vantage point over it (and Pitt) from the Carnegie-Mellon campus (where, by the way, I earned loads of incompletes, always knew what my grades were, and graduated Summa Cum Barely.

On the other hand, Pittsburgh remains one of my favorite cities, and I'd relocate there from Baltimore in a heartbeat. Amandawriter's site sucks, her attitude sucks, her clients must be morons, but her city is great! Just wanted y'uns to know that. ;)

I was thinking about that too...unless she got latin honors based on her GPA at her last school (where she apparently had no F's). My latin honors were based on my GPA for the 72 hours I took at UMSL.

Nah, failing stuff (or, in my case, amassing incompletes each semester) is what gets you into "gradual school." In fact, my progress through school was so gradual as to be nearly unnoticeable. My next degree will be earned at "tectonic plate movement school." Unfortunately, the degree will be awarded poshumously; that's how slow I am.

I removed the links. Incoming links from other highly-linked sites give you a higher rating in Google, so if she wanted them gone, fine, they're gone.
