What is the origin of your Cellar handle?
This is a topic which may have come up before, and if so, sorry for the rerun. I thought it may (or may not) be interesting to learn where some Cellarites' handles originated. Of course, in an ingenious display of anticlimactic posting, the story behind mine isn't terribly interesting...
I was at a restaurant with my older brother, YEARS ago. We were both single at the time. The waitress was a cutie, and was flirting with us heavily. I kept being a wiseguy and cracking jokes, which she seemed to find hilarious. She must have been hoping for a big tip. There is no innuendo in the previous statement. Well, after wiping away tears from a laughing fit, she asked us what our names were. My brother replied with his name, and she looked to me. To this day I don't know why, or where it came from, but my response was "They call me Hot Pastrami." My brother told everyone, and I have been known as Hot Pastrami ever since. |
Mine's from an Ayn Rand book - Atlas Shrugged.
|
mine is a derivative of tinkerbell which was a childhood nickname. *shrugs* people don't really use my first name.
|
Mine comes from one of my favorite video games, Metal Gear Solid. At the end of the game, after Solid Snake defeats his evil twin Liquid Snake, we find out that his name is "David". I thought this was an interesting and unique name, so I took it for myself.

Cough. Oh, and thanks for spoiling the end of the game. |
Mine is a tortured derivation first from a quote from the scientist who (as best I recall from high school biology) invented the microscope. First thing he looked at was some standing water and dubbed all the microscopic creatures he saw "cavorting beasties." I don't know why but that expression stuck with me.
The 2nd component is my college affiliation (Georgia Tech - the Yellow Jackets) and hence the change af beastie to Beestie. Dumb, yes. But I hate thinking up nicknames while staring at registration forms :3eye: |
A freshman year "intellectual" discussion concentrated on precisely how much fun a barrel of monkeys was. I drew a cartoon character to illustrate the issue, and it has become my personal logo.

Anyway, my name comes from the first memory I have of being born - the piercing light blinding me, the smell of blood and chemicals like a ominous swirling cloud of sterility. Momentous, yet discomforting. Devastating, yet inevitable. Then I realized my purpose: to save this shithole planet from the fiery, destructive denouement of this chapter in the Devil's book. |
R9703410-comes from my schools id #
Cuddles(yes I'm that one to)- comes from a friend of mine. I'm big so he said I'm like a big cuddly teddy bear when hes cold. |
Back in 95 I did a lot of web dev for KPMG LLP. When we QAed pages we'd sometimes run itno the "Dreaded FileNotFound"
I thought that was funny and when I had to pick a name for my Subspace user account (google Subspace . It's still around, it's fun and free. Check out Extreme Games or Trench Wars) I picked FileNotFound as it amused me. It stuck since then. Other names that I have gone by: Darker (MPlayer) - There is an ANCIENT Psygnosis game called that...I loved it. Despite the fact that it was buggy and I never managed to finish it. Strass(EQ- Mith Marr) Shadowstump(EQ - Mith Marr) OgreSlayer( Subspace, my friend played as Ogre) File - (In cases where FileNotFound didn't fit) |
I got mine from the web consulting firm by the same name. I had a good friend who got out of college and got a job with them. He and his co-workers got so many perks; even as low-level employees. Some of these included non-deductable health insurance, no dress code, and like $500 a year to spend on sports/fitness related equipment. He showed me the laid back coporate nature and how fun his job as a web developer/consultant-in-training could be (even though it was a lot of work). This is what got me interested in the technology field. That and Razorfish is a cool and original name for a company.
Sadly the company Razorfish ran into money problems about two years ago and was aqquired by SBI. My friend got laid off but he doesn't regret his short duration at Razorfish. |
uh, hi...my name is jim and, well... i just like lumber
|
Do you mind me asking what exactly it is about lumber that you find so appealing/attractive/likeable?
Don't get me wrong, I am not saying that lumber is an odd thing to like. I just never found it facinating or in the least bit excieting, so I'm wondering if I'm missing something. |
He's right.
|
among other hobbies, i enjoy woodworking.
also it's a play on the term "lumberjack" not very funny or creative, but .....I'm not very funny or creative. so.....there it is |

Feel Pretty? Agh..all your fault..
I feel pretty, Oh, so pretty, I feel pretty and witty and bright! And I pity Any girl who isn't me tonight. I feel charming, Oh, so charming It's alarming how charming I feel! And so pretty That I hardly can believe I'm real... |
My name is homage to my favorite comic strip of all time, Bloom County.
(It was either SteveDallas or Oop Ack.) |

Came up with the name after Syc told me that he was once known as "LordSycamore". I thought that was cool, and since I AM his lady, the name seemed to fit. :D
|
Latin name for gray fox. Means "dog with tail".
|
No creativity on my name. Just like my jeeps is all. It's much better than my usual moniker of theschlongmancummeth. ;)
|
The original thread is called "Explain Yourself!", created by Hubris Boy almost 2 years ago. I'm too lazy to go back and find it now. There is also another one, created by Nic Name I believe...also too lazy to go find that one.
Short story of my handle: Sycamore is the name of a band I formed in 1993, and I started using the handle for myself online about 6 years ago. It means nothing...the name just sounded cool. |

Quite the creative re-definition of <a href="http://www.auburn.edu/academic/science_math/arboretum/pix/trees/sycamore.jpg">nothing</a>, die Sykomore. As far as the original topic of the thread...I first got the intarweb sometime shortly after being obsessed over some contrived science fiction book involving a skunk. I've just stuck with it since then, a few evolutionary changes notwithstanding. edit: Oops, fixed misbehaving BBCode. |
You out-of-context posting bastard!
People used to think I came up with the name via the Terence Trent D'Arby song "Wishing Well"...or that "sycamore" means something "deep" to me. It does now, but when I came up with the name originally, it just sounded cool and started with an "S", as did our previous band names (Suicidal Elves, Shoebox, Swell, Sin). |
zippyt is short for ,
zippy the wounder doof , with his infenent konlage that matters not . In other words i know alot of shit about shit that don't count for shit . |
Goddamn...jag should be worshipping this guy.
|
wolf is the name that I first used when I signed onto the old dialup cellar.
I was confronted by that scary blinking command line cursor asking for "username": the white characters on the black screen were taunting me. I knew it was not a good idea to use my actual name (although I soon learned several users did) ... and I had to type something RIGHT THEN AND THERE ... so ... 'wolf it was. Notice the apostrophe? It's short for SilverWolf Which is short for Coyote Laughs at SilverWolf. Really. (had I not been stunned into insensibility that way, my login would have more likely been xyzzy, plugh, or perhaps even wumpus). |
Mine is a compound of the political party closest to my ideals and my real name, and it comes out like a real word.

Mine is from The World According to Garp, where one of Garp's kids misunderstands "undertow" and is afraid of some mythical creature in the ocean. It becomes a personification of the anxiety that runs deeply through life. It is me: I treasure my handle.
|
I'm a twelve year old from Bosnia and I just finished my first book in English. I took the name from Harrys Potters' Griffindor.
|
Mine's my last name, though half the cellar dwellars seem to have stuck in their head the idea that my name is "Russ Otto".
|
No HB, I think you meant Commike, you extreme leftist bastard!
|
Kitsune - japanese word for "fox", but also refers to the foxes in Japanese/Asian mythology that served as messengers to the god of the harvest, Inari. They were mischievous little bastards who enjoyed causing problems for the locals by disguising themselves as people, creating illusions, etc.
...not that I would relate to playing tricks on anyone or anything like that... |
the one im curious about is elspode.
seems like it should say something backwards, but it comes out edopsle, which is almost as odd. el? |
Mine is my first name combined with my last name. Which ideally isn't a very good idea - but heck - whatcha gonna do?

Mine is a coagulation of Middle French and English, which is supposed to be "a deluge of fire". It doesn't properly fit in either language.
I had assumed, since I noticed Griff's post where he wrote "El Spode", that Elspode meant something like 'the potato". =] |
Naw, he said in another thread that Spode was a derogatory term his High School clique made up.
Mine is Vietnamese for "Yoo hoo, GI Jane". |
I thought I'd remembered us having this topic once before...
http://www.cellar.org/showthread.php...5&pagenumber=2 My explanation is in there, along with many others, LJ...I wish the origin of mine was more interesting, but it isn't...it is just a default for me. |
Oh well, I got the "school" part right.
|
"Whit" is an abbreviation for my middle name, Whitman. It's the name I answer to in my daily life life. So, I'm always Whit, online or otherwise. It's just me.
|
From the home of my favorite writer, William Faulkner, and the best damn football team in America. GO REBELS!! Damn that little Eli Manning is a hottie!
|
Every time I think of William Faulkner, I think of that story A Rose For Emily.
Sometimes I wonder if that story wasn't the inspiration (loosely speaking) for the movie Psycho. |
