5/7/2004: Unstriped zebra
http://cellar.org/2004/unstripedzebra.jpg
Kenyan authorities are set to carry out further studies on this little one but it sure looks like a genetics problem. That there is your basic unstriped zebra calf. The folks there say they have no records of it ever happening before. http://cellar.org/2004/unstripedzebra2.jpg |
I don't know about you guys, but that is one sorry lookin critter, in a sort of "aww, how cute..." kind of way

What's strange is that judging from the second picture, the baby zebroid is striped; it's just that both colors are white. And what's that in the first picture, the family's pet duck? |
White is the new black.
|
I wish we could see its eyes...looks like an albino to me.

His muzzle looks kind of dark, no? Would be very pink, were he albino, I think.
Dang spiffy, though |
[trivia]
For the movie Sheena, they wanted Tanya Roberts' character to be riding around on a zebra. But Zebras don't like it when you try to ride them. So instead, they got a white horse, and painted stripes on it. [/trivia] |
Someone should throw a rope around his neck and drag him into the evolution thread.
|
Was this the zebra found on Neverland ranch with all those bleaching agents?
|
I sure hope this isn't the African Prophecy Equivalent to the White Buffalo ...

I'm not sure I have this right, but don't zebras have white stripes? I seem to remember reading somewhere that zebras are born black, and develop the stripes later. If that's true, then this little white fella is truly unique....and he's so cuuuuute!
I see the stripes in the second picture as well...but check out his little muzzle...he looks like he's grinning, to me....wonder what he's thinking? Sidhe |
That ain't cute, this is cute.:)
|
Says the buffalo
"Who's your daddy!!??":3eye: |
Aw, Bruce....isn't there already a thread on which to put self-portraits? *ducks and runs*;)
Sidhe |
Bwahahahahaha, very funny.:D
note to self, add sidhe to hit ..er...shit list |
Yeah, I'm finally catching on to the way this place works....:p

Buffalo? Man, that buffalo is gonna be really pissed when he finds out how much he looks like a moose.
|
For the record, baby zebras (or any baby equines) are FOALS not CALVES. Bovines have calves.
More terminology -- a female foal is a filly, a male foal is a colt. |

My vote goes to albinism too. Better get some sunscreen on that nose. |
Cute? Those aren't cute.
|
OK, the musk ox is cute, but that angler fish is going to be a tough sell.
|
I want that ox....as a lovely thick winter coat.
|
I liked the moose

Zebras do have black skin over their whole body which makes me think they have white stripes on a dark body. I used to have a tame zebra and it was interesting that the texture, length and thickness of his hair was different on his white stripes than his black ~ something you can SEE in the butt shot of that foal in the above pix. I have a picture of another zebra baby from years past that was born with very light gray / cream stripes but isn't an albino. Farm-Mom My Zebra Page |
Hi Farm-Mom, welcome to the Cellar.
Thanks for the first hand Zebra input, your site is interesting. btw- Sunday is gorgeous! |
Maybe I missed it, how did you end up witha zebra in the first place? How Is IAAP now?
Welcome to the Cellar! |
I bought him through an exotics auction but he came off of one of those big game ranches that are quite common down here in Texas. He was a wild, untouched weanling male that has to be removed from the herd and sold before the lead stud killed him. Out in the wild, the young colts are driven off but when you fence them in, there is no place to run.
Shame really ~ These ranched zebras are bred like puppy mills to supply the demand for canned big game hunts. But that's a whole 'nuther emotional thread ~ :eyebrow: Farm-Mom |

To do what? Prove mutations happen? We all know that! Silly griff... |
That reminds me... I realize you don't believe in large scale speciation, ie a common ancestor for scorpions and buffalo, but you do believe in speiciation of, say, the various big cats. Can you think of two species that are as similar to each other as possible while still not being close enough for mutation to have produced them?
I don't know if I really have a point, I'm just curious about where the cutoff is. |
just looking at the little zebra is making me feel all maternal and warm and fuzzy.
