12/14: Baby what?
http://cellar.org/pictures/babykanga.jpg
I had never seen a baby kangaroo until this picture. I didn't save the details on it -- sometimes it's hard to do that. But I think it was rejected by its mom and is being raised in a constructed pail of some sort. That there's one weird-ass lookin' beastie. |
awww... :)
i am such a sucker for things like that. like matatees...theyre so ugly theyre cute. :) |
Man. Whatever. That thing is so CUTE that it's cute. :)
Another fine Friday image from the man that can pick 'em. Good job, Tony. Even the woman likes this one :) Though I wonder how she'd like our smiling pig :) I have a cute picture of alpacas I was thinking of posting today - you probably know which one I'm talking about. Jenni's sister has two of them. Apparently they're pretty cute. I haven't seen them up close though. Oh well. |
ill bring you to see them. (alpacas)
but yea. after looking at it more, i realized that it was kinda cute :) like a rat... :) oh and as a side note, only two weeks until my birthday, everyone ... feel free to get me presents. i like presents :) (ok, i was kidding... kind of...) :) |
It *is* cute. It has that "baby" look. I remember reading an article about a study that tried to determine the reaction that we have to "baby" anythings.
First they analized what makes a face seem like a baby -- turns out that it's the proportion of eye size to head size more than anything else. And it's not just humans who have specific reactions to babies -- of any species. Case-in-point, the "interspecial mothering" picture that Tony posted previously. With or without all of these studies, though, babies DO affect me that way -- and I don't care why! :) |
Big eyes definitely have something to do with it. Jenni has large-ish eyes. They're not so big that you really notice them - or at least, I don't. But it's a subtle touch that makes her, quite easily, the cutest person I have ever seen. :)

My god...it looks like Ren of "Ren & Stimpy" fame...

My first Photoshop for imaging fun. (My 934th use if you include web stuff) |
how'd you get that number? seriously, 934 photoshops?
not bad though :) i used to do some fun things, but i haven't used photoshop in forever (being a unix dude has that effect on you...) |
Yes, most of them were for more traditional Photoshop uses, preparing text & graphics & images for web sites.

Looks more like a dog than Seņor "Drop the Chalupa" does.

Babies have to be cute. More so if the baby is your own. It's the reason our species have made it this far. It's our nature to protect the cute. We won't put up with any other creature that acts like a kid does.
Pretty works in a similar fashion. Most people kill cockroaches on sight, how many kill butterflies intentionally? Both are bugs after all. Hmm, I do seem to be suggesting our race survives (or did in less 'civilized' times) due to the cuteness appeal of children... I guess that's my quota for cynicism for today. |
cute = free ride at least in this society
DUDE you are so right.
If you are ood looking, you will find that things just seem to go your way more often, for your entire life. You'll get "the benefit of the doubt" more often. It's human nature to bias toward good looks, and one of the main reasons that life isn't fair. You'll get better jobs, be treated better by authority figures from teachers to police, be respected more in public, find that OTHER good-looking people seek you out, and utimately you will land a better looking mate with which to spend your days. Not fair at all (but nice!). |
Cute=Free ride
I'm imagining the hard hitting news piece- with image of a hitch-hiking hello kitty.:) |
dude...
hello kitty is my fucking hero :) |
I can attest to this, as there are about eight thousand little black eyes staring at me at any given time...
|
scary
Are there a thousand spiders around you?
Are they cute? |
Four thousand Hello Kitty dolls and whatnot.
In case you hadn't gathered or you missed that thread, jennofay == "dhamsaic's jenni". We live together. |
I think I would prefer the spiders... Hello Kitty makes me paranoid...
|
If you like hello kitty talk to hubris boy...
|
He's been gone over a month. Syc and I were just talking about that - where are you, Hubris Boy?

But, speaking from personal experience and that of friends, in Silicon Valley, the more attractive women are thought of (or at least treated) as less technically capable. I guess it's the "bimbo syndrome." The thought that you can't possibly be intelligent AND cute. To some degree, it's also true for men. Some geeks don't see an attractive guy as a TRUE geek -- and, therefore not as technically competent. But there is no question that, even in Sillycon Valley, when an attractive woman is seen at a meeting or a convention, the thoughts seem to be (in order): (a) She's a marketing drone (b) She's here because her boyfriend dragged her along (c) She's in tech support (d) She's a competent developer. Falling into category (d) (at least, in my opinion), there were many times that I found the presumption rather annoying! |
Interesting
That would be a real shame, if someone would see a stunning female and instantly assume she has nothing to do with anything technical.
I was going to write this a few postings back, and held off. Please bear with me... I was speaking from experience. I'm a thirty-something man, a competent developer myself, and very handsome from what people tell me. I am also white, if that unfortunately adds anything to the mix. I find that in my interactions with others, I seem to just get lucky, real lucky sometimes, and I wonder how. How did I get my job over a stack of 30 other applicants? Why did that cop just let me go without a ticket, when I clearly deserved one? Why did that babe come up and start talking to me out of the blue? Why was my loan approved at a ridiculously low rate, when (I snuck a look at this) others the same day were half a point higher, with the female loan officer seeming so friendly? Why do I just seem to get away with things? And why do good-looking people, other males included, seem to make conversation so easily, and are so easily befriended? I just guessed it was that in the two seconds you have to judge someone by their cover and decide "good guy or bad guy?", they say "good guy" when they see me. They then treat me better than they might otherwise. |

Sorry it took me so long to reply. Hello Kitty has those little black staring eyes on a white backdrop. It's distracting. I have enough problems without being stared at by inanimate objects.

Several friends brought up the possibility of my being "let go" becuase of my being female and my appearance at the time of each incident. A guy who I was seeing and was with me on one such event was actually angry immediately after the officer left my window saying "You just be careful and watch your speed from now on." (He was not angry that I had not gotten the ticket, just his "certainty" that he would have.) Now, that particular incident, I tend to attribute to my being calm, pleasant and cooperative to the officer. I have learned that, if I have ANY idea why I was pulled over and don't intend to fight the ticket in court, it's best to just admit what I did. In fact, when I say the officer in question pull out of his speed-trap hiding place, I immediately pulled over and waited for him (not likely he was going after anyone else as the road was pretty empty). When he pulled up behind me, he asked why I stopped. I explained that I saw him pull out, looked at my speedometer and realized why he pulled out and didn't think it made sense to make him chase me. We did go through the usual "Do you know how fast you were going?" "No, officer, I don't" routine but I did say "but I know it was faster than the limit" and he, of course told me an exact speed. I still DO wonder though what the actual reason he didn't ticket me was. I mean, he was out there in a speed-trap, which usually means that they do want to ticket people. Add to that the support for my angy friend's theory that I was a bit dressed up with short pants on at the time (points that he brought up vehamently in the following few minutes), and I just don't know. Oh, I did NOT try (intentionally or unintentionally) the infamous "crying helpless woman" routine on him -- I was quite calm the whole time. <shrug> Who knows? As Joe said above, sometimes you just get lucky in certain situations and don't know, for sure, why. Is it appearance? Gender? Usually there's no real way to tell in any specific case. Sometimes the favorer (in my example, the cop) probably doesn't even know why they "rule" in your favor. |

It's my opinion that hot female programmers are rare. I know they exist.. i'm just saying that they're rare. So, when people treat you like that, it's not like a prejudice out of malice or anything like that.. it's just statistics. Hot female programmers are like 1% of the population of programmers (maybe higher..i'm still in school so I'm not sure.). Once they find out you're beautiful AND smart, most men will be thrilled to talk to you.

So, are they Australian ... or Italian? |
God looking
"ood looking"? My bad. That was supposed to be "good looking", way back last year when it was posted. Probably messed up the entire thread.
"odd looking"? Now we're all over the road. |
