science vs. norse mythology
I tried to find the evolution vs. I. Design thread.. but well.. obviously I couldn't. SO! well seeing as how I am in the middle of the hotbed of that debate being in the great state of Kansas *please note dripping sarcasm* I thought this was rather funny and I think I'll have to harass some people with it. well follow the link and take a peek if you like.
http://www.thepaincomics.com/weekly041229a.htm for the record I'm on the side of evolution. (and yes, I am quite aware it is only a theory) |

I gotta say, I laughed at the "Well, well, well" link...

As a practitioner of Germanic Shamanism, I don't think the apology was worded anywhere near strongly enough.
You think those guys in the VISA commercial look scary?? You ain't seen scary until you've seen an entire horde screaming YOUR name with a look of blood vengence on their faces. |
That was pretty good.
I'm in Kansas too. I am more inclined to believe in Evolution, also. I am pretty out of the loop on current events, seeing as I avoid them and dont watch TV. What do you mean about Kansas being a hotbed for the debate? Is something going on in Kansas? |
*giggle* that's pretty funny.

Nice. I now have a good piece to spam my friends with.

If religion is the opiate of the masses, in Kansas, ignorance is the needle.

That explains all the dirty syringes I found in the yard. I think I heard about this. Probably after I moved here. Luckily we can ignore most of the psychobabble and do our own thing. There are a lot of mennonites in this area and they seem okay...they pretty much keep to themselves. Dakota says this area supports teaching evolution in the schools (non-mennonite ones), but usually the smallest voices aren't heard (small voices from small towns). The Christian radio station, however is the only really strong signal. I have been dieing for some good music. The closest I get (which is not bad) is the local classic rock station, but they seem to play the same stuff all the time. |
It has been my experience that Mennonites are extremely hard-working, decent, mind-their-own-business folks who live what they believe. I admire that.

They work their asses off.
A friend of mine is a contractor. When he goes into an area, he checks to see if any of them live around the worksite. |
hey case.. are you living around newton/witchita? just curious, a friend of mine went to bethel (sp?) college down there, the college radio station wasn't i/2 bad..
|
I am about 3-4 hours southwest of wichita.
The mennonites are actually pretty cool people. They are honest, and yes, they do work very hard. They also have a ton of money. When a mennonite gets married, he gets a large plot of land and is expected to make his living off it. They are everywhere around here, but you never hear them complain or talk down to anyone. I haven't seen one become obnocious or treat anyone badly, either. They seem to be decent, quiet people, generally speaking. I don't think I could be a mennonite, though...the rules are very rigid. All of the women wear the exact same kind of dress (in different colors and patterns) and these little black cloth thingies on the backs of their heads. All of the women have long hair put in a bun and do not wear makeup or jewelry. The men aren't quite as restricted in their dress, but it is obvious they have certain rules about appearance, too. |
yeah one of my best friends and the guy I've been in 4 bands with was raised menonite, the thing is that they moved here because although they believe in that particular sect, his father has a... I dunno obsession with technology (he's a comp. sci proffessor at KU now) so, although they don't prohibit technology the was the amish do, it was kinda frowned upon.. anyway!
so kind of near coffeeville ( I always wanted to live there just because of the name, although.. man that place SUCKS!!) just curious, as to the radio, give XM a try (an ex- g/fs' brother is an over the road trucker and he swears by it) anyway! good luck, if you ever get up to witchita check out kirbys' beer store.. it's a bar that does do some good live music) other than that good luck. |
3-4 hours s/w of witchita? oh crap! you really are in the middle of nowhere... that's over by dodge/the colorado border... you ought to go see mrnoodles band in colorado if you get the chance.. check out some of his stuff on myspace.. look for gashead or I can post a link.. well... actually I'll just do that..
http://www.myspace.com/index.cfm?fus...20050523100053 (assuming the link works) good stuff! if for whatever reason you might find yourself up in this neck of the woods I can shw you where to get cheap beer/drinks and good music. the world is an odd and large place, although seemingly getting smaller by the moment.. I think that's a good thing.. then again the loss of regional identity could be a problem in the long run. |
Yes, we are about 40 miles west of Dodge. We ARE in the middle of nowhere, which doesn't really bother me...hell, it's kind of nice not being bombarded with corporate crap every time we go to a nearby town. We don't even have a decent grocery store nearby. But, it makes life interesting. We save a lot of money, not eating out. If we want to go to the bar, we go to the one in Copeland, at which a large pitcher of beer costs 5.00. I enjoy the solitude for the most part. It's peaceful.
We will be in Wichita next weekend, but we are heading over to the Pagan Festival (put on by Elspode) which is near Kansas City (I think). Maybe we will get a chance to go do something on Saturday night after we get the kids. |
damn I need to contact him about that.. being a little on the pagan side although not.. well.. I'm agnostic.. although I tend to believe in the 'older' religions more.. long damn story.. sorry to hear you're all the damn way out there.. if you ever end up in Lawrence, it'll be breath of fresh.. mostly liberal air.. more coffee shops and live music than you can throw a rock at.. unless you are really handy with the rock throwing
|
wait... there's not a dillons handy? (the store..) sure they got bought out by Kroger, but the Dillon family is from around Newton.. met Jenny Dillon(went to school with a friend of mine.. damn nice girl for being stinking rich).. huh good luck with living down there..may I ask why you are down there? ( I assume family or a job)
