Motorcycle Fever
 

Boy I have it bad. I would like to have another Honda Goldwing. I had a 1980. Anyway my dream is to make a trip around the Pacific N. West. I've seen some of it back when I was playing with trucks. But not in day light, such as Snake River Canyon. I think I paid around 6k for the 80, now 20k+. Not sure about my knees anymore, sure about my money. So dream on. Was a used one here in this small town awhile back, but didn't have fever then :smack: Only photo of 80 interstate I can find.

eventhough i raced supercross and motocross and consider myself ample on a street bike, i'd for sure get hit. in this town anyway. no one here respects the motorcycle. bunch of lunatics driving with their heads up their butts. great dream though, i destroyed my knees racing so even if i wanted, i couldn't ride again. then again, with the gas prices the way they are, yeah, i could endure the pain :D

my dad's friends were goldwingers, they'd ride everywhere. The aspencade that one of them had was insane. it was essentially a cadillac, only with no roof. riding on the back of it (he wouldn't let me drive) was extremely posh.

riding a goldwing is like smoking a pipe though. you have to be of a certain age or it looks forced. gravitas is required. I can't wait to be old enough to do both.

ack! Goldwingers! They're not moterbikes, they're cars with two wheels with the handling of a tractor. 7 more months till I'm legal on a Ducati S4R. 8 months till 6 months in traction. Ohhhhyea.

I'm not angling for anything so monstrous, I'm just looking at a Suzuki SV650. but I'm looking at it really hard. It'll be my 5th bike.

I think you're all forgetting that the goldwing started as a sport bike. go back and look at some of the late 70's vintage models without all of the tour trim. I think the look is very cool, kind of a boxy, strap a fender strat on the back and ride to a gig sort of look.

If I lived anywhere but LA, where drivers regularly swerve to hit bikers on purpose, I would own one.

I don't know nothing about no Goldwings, but an HD FLT is a damn comfy ride from the passenger perspective. When LJ's dad moved from Norristown, PA to Mission Viejo, CA, he invited us along to share the ride (one HD, one corolla, much switching back and forth) and see the sites. Only motorcycle I was ever able to fall asleep on.... Kansas is boring.:zzz:

Not sure,but I think the aspencade came after the interstate. Interstate was a 4 cyclinder. I see now that they'er 6. Don't know if I can keep one up w/my knees.
Ok the bottom line about my dream. I'm 61 yrs. old. I have copd, emphyzima, asbestosis and degenerate bone loss. Maybe other shit. I have worked and been almost around the world. I've seen probably as much of the world as anyone who joined the army at 16. If I get kill on a bike tour all my insurance will pay off. So why not do something I would like to do? Or stay here and die in bed or a damn nursing home.

Bikes are tough for those long stretches of nothing(Kansas) where you'd be squirming even in the most comfortable car. They are outstanding where the scenery is great but those are also the places the other drivers are paying least attention to little things like what lane they're in.

Ever see those B-movies where a "biker gang" terrorizes a family in the station wagon by riding along side beating on the car with chains and clubs? What a crock-o-shit! Even in near misses....the biker loses...believe me....every time.
The same applies to deer, trees, potholes, road debris, sand, ad nauseum.
I've known guys that rode for years...100k miles or more without a bad one. But the odds are getting worse all the time....can you say cell phones? :eyebrow:

If you play your cards right and pick the right nursing home, you can have your way with some pretty nurses first.

Okay, I'm lying my ass off. Nursing home nurses range from evil to repulsive. Except for the three that just graduated from nursing school and don't yet realize that nursing homes are where old nurses go to die.

There's a company in Calgary that converts a Goldwing to tricycle. Sounds goofy but I met a guy once on one he said he converted when the bike fell over with his wife under it and he couldn't pick it up.

I'm in the Jungle. My beloved NSR is in Thailand. I admit I had to look at the SV650 as I had forgotten about it. On my return to Thailand whenever that is I think I've settled on a 600 Hornet, 599 in US. I'll have to sit on it first though as I don't like wide bikes. I have in another life and garage a 650 Alazzurra. NSR is fun but I want something a bit more relaxed for touring. Hornet is a CB600 with the RR engine, it also has Fireblade wheels with big rubber. I think Yamaha has an FZ6 equivalent but in Thailand one has to take what one can get. If I don't do that I'll look into restoring a Ductai F3, which is collecting dust in a junk yard. Here in Indo I'm reduced to a Honda Wave tricked out with some Thai bits to satisfy my creative/mechanical need.

Think when I was in Indonesia , biggest bike you could get was 250cc.
My 1st bike was a Honda 100cc I bought while working in Sumatra back in 1976, I was 33 years old. Broken collar bone from that one. In 1978 while living in the "N'awlins," LA. area I bought a Honda 500cc twin. Hit in rear end on An Easter morning close to super dome, not hurt. Later watched a guy back into it, 600 bucks damage. Then in 1981 I bought a Honda Interstate. Think the longest ride my now x and I made was from NO. across MS. south to north, across Ark. to OKC. Then back down though TX. then old hwy 90 home.

Your not talking about a gun to your head and have to decide whether to pull the trigger or not. There are alternatives to the two choices you mentioned.
It sounds like you've been all over the world but I'll bet there are lots of cool places in the US you haven't been. Think of all the women you haven't given any money to yet. :D

A scan of a sorry photo of my 1st bike. A short time after this was made, my wife & I was headed down a trail away from beach, an old man came in from right on bycycle. Bamm. Ladys ride side saddle there so she didn't hit ground. In a few minutes we had a crowd with big knives, "parangs" all around us.
someone came by in a jeep from the Indonesian oil compamy and helped us out. Anyway I agreed to pay any Dr. bills. He showed up at house w/a bill that took 2 people to carry. So after feeding some of the chiefs in my neighborhood, I made him an offer that he took.

One of my neighbors who died recently was in the oil biz as well. He had some awesome stories, with occasional embellishment, about mixing with the locals in various scary places. Pretty adventureous crowd he ran with. I'd like to hear any stories you've got bb. Maybe start a thread and spin an occasional tale?

Maybe about the kick off of the Biafra civil war or when the Shaw of Iran was crowned back in 76. Which BTW I have a few great tales of. Or perhaps about the jungles of Peru. S.E. Asia was kinda slow. Open to suggestions.

Depends if it was a Bike or a form of transport. I sent it to show that not much has changed at least in the basic requirements in the past 30 years.

600 hornet is a damn nice bike for the money, reliable too =)

Growing up my Father owned a Honda and Suzuki dealership. My sister and brothers grew up on motorcycles and we (dh and I) recently bought Hondas for our two kids. 8year old got a 50 and the 10 year old got a 70. Brings back a lot of memories....all good!

So the other night dh and I were watching the kids ride. Dh built a small jump out of mulch and they were trying it out. I decided I wanted to try it. My dd said that was fine but I had to wear her helmet and chest protector. I was doing great having a super time. I had gone around about 20-30 times and was finally getting a little tired. My big but doesn't fit on the little seat so well anymore! Well the last time over the jump I got a little to cocky and C R A S H down I went. (Bruised my ankle and my head hit the ground quite hard, thank goodness I had the helmet on! ) I absolutely LOVED it and would like my own bike to be able to ride with the chilins.
