Color suggestions?

After 9 years of sleeping in what is now our master bedroom, I finally got around to taking off the winnie the pooh border! So now I want to paint and am looking for color suggestions. What colors are good for master bedroom. We want something soothing and relaxing. Any suggestions?

I like Behr paint. they used to have a color called Lavendar Water, or something like that. It's BeUtiful, restful and just plain gorgeous. You have to like lavendar, though. It's like the purple of Monica's apt on Friends.

Why dont you give "baby blue" a try? i helped my friend painted her bedroom baby blue (sky blue), and the result came out pretty good :D

I love red... red rooms.

Clodfobble 08-22-2005 10:16 PM

Our bedroom is a kind of bamboo green color called "Exuberance" by Behr. I really, really like it.

Serene: go for blues, purples, grays
Energizing: go for yellows, oranges
I have heard they paint rooms/halls in mental institutions pink for the calming effect - ?
I prefer greens and tans - nice neutral colors - not too distracting, and easy to change the theme by changing your accent pieces.
Colors like red, navy, or dark purple are a big commitment - hard to paint over if you hate them.

Since you say "our", I assume you are sharing a bedroom with someone else. When some folks say "I don't care", what they really mean is "Anything but x or y". Best to check.

I'm just sayin'.

Jeez, what was wrong with Winnie the Pooh? :eyebrow:

We have some pink hallways because there was leftover paint. That is how many of our paint colors are chosen. The crisis staff bathroom, which had previously been "15 years of dirt over cream colored paint" was recently painted peach because there was a can of it in the basement.

There is gray paint on the floors in the stairwells because it was leftover from painting some battleship or other. (no joke ... Navy Surplus Paint)

Always been a bit nervous of painted walls in bedrooms. English style is for wallpaper on the (you guessed it) walls - maybe a nice Farrow and Ball hand-finished jobby (or try some American wallpapers) and just the minimum of complementary colour on the accompanying woodwork. Nothing like the texture of paper to sooth things down - paint can be so hard no matter what you try. Colourwise something with a 'dusty' in the description (e.g. dusty peach, dusty apricot and so on) as they help to, well, hide the dust and bedrooms for some reason just seem to get dustier than all the other rooms (well ours do). Make sure you create some appropriate focal point - you know the sort of thing, a canopy over the bed, or an elaborate piece of metalwork furniture. or an ornate mirror, any of which will also help to soften the background decor. Whatever you do, though, don't go for the checkered effect all over the room - 12" squares of contrasting colours will never work!

I'm partial to white texture paint as a compliment to wood, but I have seen some nice things done with browns that suprised me.

Pshaw! 24" squares of a variety of shades of blue work very well in my livingroom.

They're just telling you that to be nice - ask a really good friend....

Whatever color you end up picking, consider doing some kind of Martha Stewart-y texture painting or something ... I helped a friend rag roll her bedroom walls (blush over light rose, I think it was) and it came out looking really cool. She's no longer in that house, so unfortunately I can't show you pictures.

My bedroom is burgundy, with lots of cherry and dark woods. It's a very warm, inviting room. As QotR says, red is a big commitment but one worth it if you've got furniture to go with it.

melidasaur 08-23-2005 10:46 AM

I went on one of the paint websites, maybe it was glidden... but they had a feature that allowed you to test different types of paint by painting a virtual room.

My bedroom is cream walls, old hardwood around the windows and the rest of the accents are red. Yes, I do really love red rooms. I might paint one of the walls red.

Cyclefrance 08-23-2005 10:58 AM

Before you get too carried away with all these 'bright colour (oops!) color' ideas maybe a quick look at this (quick look is all you need!).

Actually the website is of a hotel where each room is individually decorated - how about that for an ideas template 20-odd differently designed bedrooms to whet your artistic appetite... (well, sort of....)

What's your favorite? (remembered to drop the 'u' that time)

Went shopping at Home Goods today and found a chocolate brown bedspread/blanket thing which gave me some inspiration. Walls will be off white or antique white, one focul wall (opposite of the bed) done in 12" squares of blue hues. Accesories in a cool blue and chocolate. Trim probably same as walls (but maybe in gloss)....

thanks for the suggestions!!!!

What an amazing coincidence. We have this cool blue towel with chocolate trim. You really must have it. It would be no trouble at all. I'll run it through the hot cycle before sending it. We are currently using it to wipe the dog over when he returns from the garden, wet and muddy, but I am sure we can find something else....

#F5F5FF is a nice color. It makes things blend in.

If you can't decide on a color, may I suggest wallpaper? There is a VAST selection of patterns, colors, etc. You can use a material that has several colors so you can usually merge lots of you favorites in one application. Also choose a theme, or just go with a mottled or patternless paper that reflects your own preference, personality, and/or taste. Wallpaper isn't just color. It's texture, depth, mood, style, and statement. At least go down and look at some. If "patterns" scare you, ask them to show you some material in the commercial line. It is more generalized and is more suttle and perpetually relaxing and comfortable.
I have been installing wallpaper and doing specialty finishes/effects for over 30 years. Wallpaper isn't for everybody, but you won't know until you give it a chance. Check it out.... I'm curious as to what you decide.
