Hybrid Car Blamed For Carport Fire

FREMONT, Calif. -- Investigators in Fremont say several cars are destroyed after a hybrid car started a fire at a gated condo complex carport overnight.

Crews were called to the complex on Oakwood Terrace in Fremont at about 2:45 a.m. When they arrived at the scene, there were four or five cars fully in flames. It took about 15 minutes for firefighters to control the flames.

Investigators were worried the incident was related to a string of suspicious fires recently in San Jose and on the Peninsula, but determined a Toyota Prius sparked the fire.

The condos were not threatened during the fire.

My Toyota Tacoma P/U truck was made in Fremont, 12 miles from here. The Prius may have be built in the same NUMI plant in Fremont. Pass it on I-880 on the way to the Raiders/Warriors/A's games.

Rising energy prices and environmental problems have led to increased interest in alcohol as a fuel. Much attention has been placed on the prospects of using ethanol as fuel for cars.

The first four aliphatic alcohols (methanol, ethanol, propanol, and butanol) are of interest as fuels because they can be synthesized biologically, and they have characteristics which allow them to be used in current engines.

As of 2005, production of all four alcohols from petroleum is cheaper than fermentation and extraction from biomass, but this is expected to change as fermentation and extraction processes become more efficient while petroleum becomes more expensive.

Hybrid car suspected as cause of fire = news.
1000's of fires caused by failure to use heating and cooking appliances safely = not news.

Somebody already started a thread about "why do we still call it news?"....This article falls into the 'notnews' category.
