WA says no to gay marriage

After a very long wait, the Washington supreme court came back today and said that it is constitutional for the state to disallow marriage to same-sex couples. The ruling states that same-sex marriage may be the law of the land someday, but it will come from the people and the legislature, not the bench.

This is annoying to me, as I live in Washington and would have taken advantage had it gone the other way :(

Well, it looks like the court isn't going to help you, so you've got to go to your elected reps and pressure them. ;)

That's right, the only way this is going to finish properly is if each state acts according to the wishes of it's citizens, and the only way that can happen is to write those letters!

Yeah, I know. And I definitely will. But it bums me out that I thought we had a chance, and any new action is going to take *years* to make it through the system.

This is a procedural decision. It's simply not the domain of the courts to decide this issue, and I'm glad to see that a few people sitting on the bench aren't willing to undo the legal process undertaken by the representative branch.

They are right to put it on the representatives. We've seen a lot of abdication of responsibility of late, maybe things are turning. Good luck with your fight though, I know its hard to accept something as procedurally wrong when its you paying the price.
