iPod

My husband bought an iPod 20GB about a year ago. Actually just over a year, it is now out of warrantee by under 1 month. Seems the hard drive has crashed, this is according to the 'genius' at the apple store.

Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem or similar.

Well, I bought myself one, and then I bought my wife one for Valentine's. They have each been in for service, mine twice. In both cases it happened about 13 months after I bought them :eyebrow: and I was happy I sprung for the service contract, which I hardly ever do.

Anyway, the problem with mine the first time was the hard drive cable was disconnected. I believe there are web sites around that talk about how to do simple repairs like this; you might google around and see. For that matter you can probably buy new hard drives.

Of course your other option is to bitch at Apple and convince them they should honor the warranty. I've no idea how flexible Apple is, but the guy working the front desk at the local Apple store probably isn't the one who's going to make an exception for you.

I recently performed open heart surgery on MrsV's 40Gb 4th gen iPod.

I pried the case open with my thumbnail, took it all apart (six #6 micro Torx screws) and discovered that the touchwheel is welded to the front panel of the case. It would have required destroying the plastic weld/rivet-y joints holding the touchwheel in place to get to the source of the problem: a collapsed ffwd switch. So I buttoned it all up and the thing fired right up.

Lesson: some parts are not renewable (faceplate/touchwheel) without a new part. Others are generic. If I'd had another small hd of greater capacity, it would have been trivial to "upgrade" her iPod, capacity wise.

For the hd upgrade, only a new hd and my thumbnail would be required. About a five minute process. Likewise battery replacement.

My iPod finally gave out on me a couple days ago, so I'll drag it down to the Apple store tomorrow. iPods are made here, so a replacement is only like 75 bucks.
