Preferred SmartMedia brands?
And now, what should be an easy question (for once):
I recently bought my dad a digital camera that came with a 16MB SmartMedia card. He's interested in upgrading to a bigger card, but I wasn't sure what brand (if any) to recommend. I know that as with most things in life that are technological and delicate, going brand-X is rarely a good long-term investment. But is there any particular brand that's known to be reliable? |
Big name brands. Fuji. Shit like that.
Go to Target and buy whatever is most expensive there. :) Crucial makes really good stuff, and I know they make CompactFlash. I'm too lazy to look, but you might want to. http://www.crucial.com |
I use the compact flash, but one thing to remember is that Sandisk is NOT a no-name brand... they're one of the big players. As well as the other brands that are big in the memory world, Crucial and Kingston.
I'm sure there are now people with a compact-flash camera, an MMC mp3 player, and a smartmedia PDA, and maybe even a Sony memory stick-using Sony device. Who have to burn CDRs for their MP3-playing device in the car. |
As memory goes, I love me some bestbuy. Got a a 64meg upgrade for $10 cheaper than anywhere else I saw it (I forget the brandname exactly), and it blew out two days later. They replaced it for free with no hassle, and the guy even offered to install it for me (but I get my rocks off opening my CPU up, so he was spared that labor).

CF Memory
I have a 30MB PNY CF card that I bought back in late 1998 for $200.
I got more than my use out of it in 2 Windows CE PDAs and a Digital Camera. I can even use my USB CF reader with this beast. PNY rebrands good CF memory. I beat the crap out of this memory in 3 different devices, and my computer. I only had to format it once, when my digital camera decided to save a corrupt picture. I know I feel like I overpaid now, but remember 3.5 years ago this stuff was not cheap! If I can get one to last this long, it's worth checking out. |
steve - not random access memory. compact flash memory / smart media. :)
