5/8/2002: Bomb robot drags dead suicide bomber
http://cellar.org/2002/bombrobot.jpg
I saw this on video and it was very striking. A suicide bomber blew up near a checkpoint as his explosives detonated "prematurely". In order to get the body without endangering anyone else, they use these bomb squad robots. And it's surreal. The bomb robot rolled over to the body, used its long reaching arm to grab the body by the leg, and slowly dragged it out of the open area. |
Wow. He's remarkably intact, considering he just detonated a bomb. Maybe it was just a training bomb?
|
No kidding. The pictures I've seen of detonated suicide bombers are... well, filled with scattered body parts. So he looks like he's in pretty good shape, overall.
I've seen these before as well - it's just routine to them. It's surreal to us because we've never seen it in the US before. |
Actually, I can't figure out which bomber matches up with which story. I know this one went off at a checkpoint before the guy meant it to go off. There was another report that said that a bomber's bomb didn't even kill the bomber.
I don't know if that second report refers to this picture. So it may be that he's still alive here. |
Update: this guy was in fact not dead when the robot went out to fetch him. When the robot started to drag him away, his other leg moved to sort of help his body along. This was the first clue that he wasn't in fact dead. He's now in the hospital.

There have been reports of some suicide bombers having their initiators go off without detonating the main charge...like that incident back in February where a lady shopper in a grocery store in Efrat double-tapped the bomber with her carry piece after his dud dudded.

where you from?

"Double-tapped" is the standard police and military lingo for the proper way to use a pistol to take someone down, i.e. to fire twice in rapid succession before recoil become and issue. This ensures maximum takedown power and accuracy.
I think a "carry-piece" would be the firearm a cop carries while off duty.
Die-hard cop show watching pays off for a change (TiVo rules! I can watch Homicide on Court TV whenever the heck I want, not at 1:00 freaking AM.) |

¿En inglés, por favor? |
I correct myself again: it was clear from before the robot picked him up that he was alive. (New newsvideo showed more of it)

Here I lie,
All burned and bloody, Lit my fuse, It was a dud-dy! |
A "double-tap" is two quick shots, usually to the head. There's just as much recoil involved as in any other technique as far as I can tell; no way can you get a second shot off before the recoil happens .The reason for the two shots is to make sure it's lethal.
A "carry piece" is just a concealed handgun. |
Toto?
From the shape of the land, and the way oglers are just standing around videotaping everything, this might as well be Kansas. :D
|
Double tap? Why only two?

A robotic arm with a rifle attached to it manoeuvres toward a Palestinian youth who was seriously wounded Wednesday in an attempted suicide bombing at a bus stop at the Megiddo junction, southeast of Haifa. According to Israeli army radio, the man was injured when part of the explosives he was wearing on his body exploded. Photo: Yariv Katz-Yedioth Aharonot/AFP |
