Simultaneously Eating and Drinking
I was eating something in the car, and when I was done with the whole thing I took a drink to "wash it down" ...
I thought about the phrase "wash it down" and it's literal meaning, as I felt the food particles goe down my gullet. I thought about how we usually drink as a part of a meal, drinking between bites, instead of waiting and taking a drink to "wash it down" ... I began to wonder under what circumstances a primitive hunter gatherer would have such easy access to drinking water. I concluded our evolutionary ancestors would not have had the resources to drink an unlimited amount of water; they would not have water on hand at the same moment that they had food, or vice versa. I then thought that this constant, unnatural liquid intake might be diluting our digestive juices. I thought, our bodies probably ramp up production to compensate for this. And as a result, we have some of the health problems that we do. |
Did all that thinking give you agita?

I do not typically drink during a meal. Don't know why, just something I've done since I was a kid. It wasn't a "family thing," I'm the only one that does this. In fact, I usually won't even have a beverage at my place setting during a meal (yeah, of course wine is an exception to this), but no soda, juice, or water until after I'm done eating. I do the same thing at work. If I take my soda out of the fridge when I start eating, it's warm by the time I get to it. Yuck.

@wolf: I think you may be shunning the norms of society and obeying your natural instincts. Then again, our instinct may be to consume as much as you can of whatever is available. In the first interpretation, however, you can pat yourself on the back for being in touch with your inner spirit guides, or whatever terminology you find most gratifying.

I know a lot of people who might take one sip of water while they're eating. Not me, whether it's water, or milk, or diet coke, or a beer...I drink a ton while I eat.
Maybe I have a lazy peristalsis?:3_eyes: |
@Shawnee: The other side of this is that water fills up your stomach, and you consume less calories.

Natural instincts. That's a really good excuse. I'll have to use that in future. |
When you're "wolfing" something down?

DUDE. a bad pun? wtf? where're your standards?

. . . can be rather messy!

Have you ever started to eat something or take a large pill and suddenly forget how to swallow? You're sitting there with this big blockage right at the entrance to your esophagus and you can't remember which muscles you have to move to get it down the chute. The veins in your head start to bulge and you either need to hack it out into your hand or risk choking.
Has this ever happened to you? |
Was it a pretzel?
