GPS Handhelds
Anyone here have experience with GPS handhelds? I'm not talking the in-car navigation units, I mean the ones you take hiking and such. I'm looking to get one so I can tag my photos that I take out west (Big Horn National Forest, Yellowstone, Badlands National Park, etc.) with lat & long. Also going to be using it to look at topo data and find hiking routes, potential campsites, and good views.
Recommendations? Things to watch out for? Thanks folks. |

Look for usa photo maps , free prog VERRRRRY cool , it will interface with Most Gps's As to a hand held I have a garmin etrex , Verrrry basic , but it seems to work ok |
I have here a Magellan Explorist 300 with battery acid on the battery door, if you want it.
Sold as is, but I'm sure it would work if cleaned and re-batteried. $30 |
My friend brought one when we went to Missouri. Very very helpful. I don't know how expensive they are but they do help a lot.

I've been using a Garmin E-Trex Legend for a few years now. Works fine for me. I second the USA Photomaps vote from Zip, as well. Great free program, although you'll chew up a shitload of HD space and time downloading the aerial photos and topos, but it is a blast to use.
Strangely, I can't seem to interface my Garmin with it anymore since I got a computer with no serial port, and had to add a USB/serial converter. |
Hmm, the eTrex line was one I was looking at.. but my laptop doesn't have a serial port.. so what you mentioned in that regard Elspode is a little worrying.
Thanks UT I will let you know here soon. |
you have to make sure that the serial port is set up for the correct port and the correct baud , parity , etc,,, on both the pc AND USA Photo maps , and on the gps
|
Did all of that, *and* emailed w/ the guy who wrote the program. He's as flummoxed as I am.
