What are the odds?

LEMITAR, N.M. — Police say two cousins traveling in the opposite direction on Interstate 25 in central New Mexico have been killed in a traffic crash.

New Mexico Department of Public Safety spokesman Peter Olson identifies them as 58-year-old Deborah Hughes of Mesa, Ariz., and 68-year-old Tom Zimmerman of Lemitar.

Olson says Hughes was driving a northbound car Monday when she crossed into the median near Lemitar and went airborne into the northbound lanes, hitting a truck and then a motorcycle driven by Zimmerman.

Olson says Hughes was on her way to visit her father in the area.

Zimmerman was a former Socorro County sheriff.

That's the whole story so you don't need to follow the link, but I got it from Fox, so if you want to verify that it came from a credible news source... you're pretty well screwed.;)

Hmm... I dunno. I suppose we could figure it out. How many people actually live in New Mexico, 120? 130?

lookout123 03-25-2008 12:09 PM

one of them lived in arizona, one in new mexico. they were on opposite sides of the same road at the same time without a common starting or destination point. the odds are probably stacked against that coincidence alone. Then when you realize that she lost control of her car at the exact right (wrong) moment, crossed the road and the person she killed was her cousin? Wow.

come on you cellar geeks, get your fancy math gizmos out and figure it out.

Since she was going to visit her dad in Lemitar, and her cousin was from Lemitar, and she was in Lemitar when the accident occurred, I'd say the odds are 1 in 42.

Let me know if you want more detail.

It is said that most car accidents occur within 15 km from home.

I personally believe that US Americans are unable to avoid killing their cousins in a car crash because some people out there in our nation don't have maps
