U.S. segregates violent Iraqi prisoners in crates

WASHINGTON (CNN) --
Quote:

The U.S. military is segregating violent Iraqi prisoners in wooden crates that in some cases are not much bigger than the prisoners.

The military released photos of what it calls "segregation boxes" used in Iraq.
Three grainy black-and-white photos show the rudimentary structures of wood and mesh. Some of the boxes are as small as 3 feet by 3 feet by 6 feet tall, according to military officials. There was no image released of a box that size.
The average Iraqi male is 5 feet 6 inches tall, according to the Iraqi Ministry of Health. That leaves little room for a prisoner to move once placed inside.

~snip~ "We are able to capture threats to the Iraqi government and the population, detain them, rehabilitate them and, 99 times out of 100, release them," Morrell said. "We've made remarkable progress there. And I would just say it looks as though the glidepath is on continuing to reduce the population because of the success we're having within these camps."

Just wondering here if anyone finds this terribly offensive? Or shall I say any moreso than a prisoner put into solitary confinement? At first I thought it was horrible, then after looking at the pictures I wondered how different this was to being put into solitary at a regular prison.

Seems kind of middle of the road.
A lot more trouble than just hacking their heads off, but less labor intensive than water-boarding.

And by "rehabilitate" we mean, magically turn them from a chicken into a human.

Viola! Presto! Abracadabra!

Maybe I've watched too many movies, but I thought the bad guys used the boxes.

Takes too much floor space, stand them up and pack them in.;)

Dip them in boiling water, add a little salt, and Walla! Tastes just like chicken!

Why make the crates so small ?

Elspode 08-11-2008 12:45 PM

1. Takes less material.
2. Takes less time.
3. Bigger boxes allow sufficient room for the contents to wind up and let fly a damaging blow.

4. Allows for a smaller pot of water to be boiled, hence less material needed in a place where water is scarce.
