for those too lazy to click the link, it's an advertising campaign urging parents to encourage their kids to exercise more. The ad implies that kids who just sit on the couch playing video games will die early. The video game industry doesn't like it.

It pisses me right off. That guy was right. What if it'd shown a picture of a child slumped (apparently fatally) in inactivity with a sinister looking book in their hands instead of a joypad?

Oooooo - goody! What book would it be?

What book could kill?

Let's think about this and meet up later with our ideas....the list is potentially endless....

Well, for the purposes of propaganda, A kid reading The Anarchist Cookbook would be good.

The White Mountains
The Witches
Little Brother
The Anarchist Cookbook
...and to throw gasoline on the fire:
The Qur'an

Here's one...

A Hitman's Guide: author :anonymous

In 1993 a triple murder was committed in Alabama by a man who was alleged to have used this book as his guide. The family of those killed by the hit man sued Paladin Press (the published) saying Paladin Press aided the murder.

I think it would have to be Chuck Palahniuk's Lullaby.

Quote:

Lullaby is the story of Carl Streator, a newspaper reporter who has been assigned to write articles on a series of cases of sudden infant death syndrome, from which his own child had died. Streator discovers that his wife and child had died immediately after he read them a "culling song," or African chant, from a book entitled Poems and Rhymes Around the World. As Streator learns, the culling song has the power to kill anyone it is spoken to.

Because of gaming, I dont think that would be a problem. Most kid would rather play Call of Duty than read a book.

Oh, Dana's right. What a load of crap.

When I was a kid, I read my ass off. I also climbed trees, played baseball, football, kickball, bombardment, ghost in the graveyard, went swimming and biking, joined sports leagues, and a million other non-sedentary things. Yes, books were just as fascinating to me as the video games that came along later...but they weren't my whole freaking life.

When we got Atari, I was a teenager. I loved it, but I didn't turn into death waiting to happen (sinister theme music: duh duh duhhhhhhhhh) from inactivity.

If your kids are doing nothing BUT playing video games, well that's just bad parenting and is no different than 30 years ago if you let (made?) your kid watch TV 24/7 because you just couldn't be bothered to throw the ball with them.

HungLikeJesus 03-12-2009 01:22 PM

Thanks Shawnee. My mom never threw the ball with me.

Shawnee123 03-12-2009 01:23 PM

And see how you turned out? ;)
