Family BBQ May '09

This might have easily slotted into the Images thread, but I'm hoping that other people might share their family BBQs too, and the link between us will definitely be food and drink.
From the top. This was the first family BBQ of the year. It was a very English BBQ. We dont do it like the Aussies or like the Merkins. We have about a day's notice of warm weekend weather, get some sausages and burgers in, and cook too many on tiny grills. Today was the day after Dad's birthday, so it was counted as his birthday celebration, albeit small scale (again, because we can't rely on the weather). Pic 1 - Dad and the grills. The greyish discs are really very nice burgers, there's also a chop which has been marinated in an American BBQ marinade. Pic 2 - condiments, salad and chips (crisps to us). Sadly, what I forgot to get a good photo of was my rainbow salad. Everyone seemed to enjoy it, and no-one wondered why the English salad staples of tomato and cucumber were served separately (because I loathe them). |

Over halfway through - well, I was eating and entertaining and stuff!
Pic 1 The tapas style bowl top middle held exactly that - I made Patatas Bravas. But as 2/3 of the company assembled had never had tapas/ are wary of spicy food, it was renamed mini roast potatoes, and the spicy sauce was on the side. To the left - big sausages and mini minted lamb kebabs (shop bought). To the right - pasta dish by yours truly (most to be eaten tomorrow!) My incense burner and favourite candle holder on display. Also nearly empty jug of sangria (more later) NONE of those drinks are mine. even the excusable one, which was my niece's. Pic 2 Fruit and marshmallow kebabs. Dessert #1 |

Dessert #2 Baileys cheesecake. I had none, counting it as alcohol (paranoid, moi?) No pics of dessert #3 and #4! Profiteroles were scoffed up too soon (guilty in part) and sherry trifle stayed in fridge as Mum finally realised enough was enough! Pic 2 Empty Sangria jug - only fruit left. It was filled a couple of times, this is when it had finally been abandoned. Yes, Mum & Dad brought it back from Spain. |
looks so yummy!
Now: what is a rainbow salad and where can I get an incense burner like that? it is SOOOO cool! (and I love your candle holder, too!) nice job, Sundae! I love a BBQ. |

Diz got a bone stuck in his mouth. Not his throat, his mouth. Wedged in between his teeth. Poor baby, he was frothing at the mouth and his paw was quite wet from trying to get it out by the time I realised (he hid himself in the shed and my nephew said - is he chewing an elastic band? It was ropey drool) My sister, who doesn't like me and therefore generally gets a bad press here, went into his mouth, getting a tooth puncture, and got it out. I was holding him. I didn't like to ask her for a photo of her injury, she may have taken it the wrong way. Never upset a woman who has saved your loved one! So I took a pic of mine to show you. He was not in any real danger - he could breathe and all that. But he was so distressed. Pic 2 I brought my rose fairy lights out - no-one noticed then until the sun went behind the rooftops - they thought they were real flowers. So I felt all clever and magical. |

And finally.
Dad in all his borrowed glory. Well, abs-wise anyway. I don't want to know about the rest! Will post the pic of me elsewhere. Honestly, who wears false eyelashes and stick on jewels to a family BBQ? Oh yeah, me :) |
You are all clever and magical.
how lucky they are to have someone as thoughtful as you are to be at their party! |

Shredded lettuce, red pepper, white cabbage, grated carrot, spring onion and pink onion. Pink onion? Yes! Soak chopped red onion in a mixture of lime juice and white wine vinegar. Not only does it turn it pink, but it takes away the blantant onioniness, so you can top your salad with huge whirls of it. Oh and chopped jalapenos. Dressed any way you fancy (low fat balsamic vinaigrette for my guests!) My incense burner - for cones or sticks - has been with me years I'm afraid - probably from a market. But I admit I adore my candle holder. It throws a light even I am tempted to call divine. |
Looks Like fun !!!

Your Dad looks like a jovial fellow. Makes me wish I'd have been there. Family is good. Thanks for sharing.

Setting aside the fake pecs, your dad has a good build. Good looking guy, bet he was handsome when he was young.

Dad was handsome when he was younger.
Despite being very shy he was engaged twice before meeting Mum, a fact she still holds against him! Bruce, you changed my title thinking I got the date wrong. In fact I was naming the month and the year. Not to worry, it works equally well with a more specific date. |
Oh, OK. My Bad.:o All better now.
