Duke Nukem... Never
Its a sad, sad day in gaming.
3D Realms has closed their doors. The 13 year wait is over for all the wrong reasons. :bawling: |

I loved Duke 1 and 2. Like most games, I like less graphics and more gameplay: I think after a point I say "ok great, they look like real people, but the game isn't as fun." The Dukes, along with Commander Keen, were some of the earliest games I played when I got a computer.

What a mess.
I hope some other developer can pick up this franchise. Duke Nukem 3d was a boatload of fun. |
Heh. A friend of mine was a designer and then the producer on that game for freaking ever, and finally left about two years ago. It took a long time for him to realize that they were really never going to let them call it done.

Truly this is a sad day. I shall now kill 21 gta hookers.

God that's so sad. Wolfenstein was the first PC game I ever played. Before we got a PC, me and J used to hang at this computer shop chatting to his mate behind the counter. They had a comp set up with Wolfenstein on it for customers to demo. Loved it. It was probably 75% of why we ended up with a pc.

Duke Nukem 1 (1991) 271kb
Duke Nukem 2 (1993) 1.06 MB Duke Nukem 3D (1996) 5.64 MB So it looks as though the first two were put out by Apogee (who had some great platform games) then 3DRealms took it over for 3. Very different style games. I remember downloading the original Dukes when a 1 meg download took forever! I played 3 as well, and Wolfenstein...but I loved the simplicity of the first two platformers. Great games to revisit. I guess the earliest game I ever played resembling a platform was Riddle of the Sphinx on my Atari. How far technology has come! Check out the screenshot! |
Shawnee - did you ever play Jazz Jackrabbit? I suspect you'd like it based on your comments.

I have...that one goes a bit too fast for me. If you're not running full speed and jumping right you miss a LOT. It's fun, but I prefer games where you take your time more (like Commander Keen, Hocus Pocus, Clyde's Revenge...I think I've played just about any downloadable game of that genre in the past many many years.)

Ah, Duke, we hardly knew ye.
I loved that game. Only last week I was talking about the glory days here at the nuthouse when we were allowed to install our own software and could have three nutwranglers playing at the same time. Oh, and Shadow Warrior. I loved Shadow Warrior. |
