June 14, 2009: Raw Nature (graphic)

Hoof Hearted asked me to post these pictures of nature in the raw.

Unlike the visions of Walt Disney and PETA, nature is not a Bambi movie with humans being the only threat to peace and tranquility.
It's a rough and tumble fight for survival, most every day, for real critters.

Glacier National Park, like most Rocky Mountain parks, don't have the resources or impetus to keep all the roads open in winter.
They are closed to vehicle traffic but people can traverse them on foot, weather permitting.

Two guys were walking one of these roads when they came upon what looked like road kill. But it couldn't be road kill with no traffic.

Closer inspection revealed a Lion and a Ram, dead in the road.
The Lion still had a mouthful of Ram fur, and the Ram had one of those powerful horns broken off.

It became obvious the two had been locked in a death struggle, when they toppled off the cliff, killing them both.
From the looks of the ram's horns, he hit the rocks a couple times on the way down, likely the Lion did too.

This type of struggle plays out, on various scales, millions of times every day.
I Thank God for supermarkets. ;)

That's the kind of karma you get when you eat meat all the time. If only someone had taught the Mountain Lion to make tofu, none of this would have happened. Now they both have to go and be reborn as maggots or something for another 10,000 years.

Still, when spring comes, the maggots are going to have a great feed on that. And the pictures are amazing.

Poor baby.
Staggering home from he waterhole, a bit worse for wear, when he fancied a hot late-night snack.
Missed his footing while trying to get the wrapper off and next thing you know, there's babies missing their Daddy.

This relationship can be a real rollercoaster, with thrills-a-minute, but needs anger management to work for the long haul.
It's true? I thought it was just a bunch of hooey. Live and learn, eh?

Fixed it for you. Don't get between a blue-hair and a sale item.

from these you can see mother nature has not a gentle hand, and a further reminder that we don't live in a fairy tale land of talking animals, while tragic this is the way of the world. i witnessed natures fury many times, once i saw a family Rabbits become dinner for the local predators..
