2 random inquiries

1) how do you pronounce the word, "roof"?

I say both "rewf" and sometimes, "ruf"

(rhymes with hoof . . . no, wait, that word has the same problem. Uh . . . doesn't rhyme with "rough" . . . more of a schwa sound. doesn't rhyme with anything? kinda rhymes with French "oeuf")

2) how do you write your "7s"? With a line through or not?

I've written them with a line through ever since 6th grade when I had a teacher from New Zealand.

and no line

I would pronounce roof like hoof, poof, spook...

But as I'm French, I may mispronounce.

And I write the "7" digit with a bar in the middle.

jinx 05-28-2010 10:24 AM

Roof - like boot, not like pussy.
7 - no line

Geez, jinx. You have to relate everything to cats, don't you?

Undertoad 05-28-2010 10:26 AM

roof - rhymes with toof
no line in 7s, however! occasionally a diagonal slash in zeroes. (Comp sci major)

REWF, LINE

not sure anyone pronounces "roof" like me--I think it's an inherited Southernism, like "crick" for creek. But I might just be making that up!

And the funny thing is, I use both. I'd say, My rewf is leaking so I sent somebody up to the ruf to fix it.

glatt 05-28-2010 11:04 AM

rewf

line at the top, who needs one in the middle? I'm not a German. they put the line in there to differentiate it from their 1s, which they write like a capital A without the cross slash in the middle.

dmg1969 05-28-2010 11:27 AM

I pronounce it "rewf"...like aloof.

And I prefer my sevens without lines...much like my z's.

Cloud 05-28-2010 11:56 AM
