What, exactly, is 'wang leather'?
Earlier tonight, I watched as Clark Gable referred to an old woman as being "tough as wang leather" (in "The King and Four Queens"). Now, I've heard the expression before, a few times. But, I have never known what "wang leather" is, and neither does Google. Or Wikipedia.
I really, truly hope that it's not leather made from something's wang...:thepain: |
Chinese leather.

Yeah. I saw that. But:
Leather made by a Chinaman? Leather made in China? Imitation leather? Leather you buy at Wal-Mart? Leather made by Chinese children in a New Jersey sweatshop? Or what? |
Did they have walmart in 1956? No, but still had crap imports.

Roman Condom.

Well, it's totally obscure (and clearly not dirty), as the Urban Dictionary does not have an entry for it ...
I suppose that it is not the pleather covering for a Wang Portable Computer case, though. |

THE ANSWER: According to Gregory Peck in the movie "Shoot Out" when he says to the little girl, "You're tougher than wang leather" and she asks him what Wang leather is, he replies, "It's something that don't come apart in the rain" end-quote. At least that was the meaning back then (1971) or the setting of the movie which was back in the 1800's. Anyway, there you have it, the definition of "Wang leather", in two different movies, "The King and Four Queens" and "Shoot Out" Something (Leather) that don't come apart in the rain. Pretty cool huh? Z |
I never heard of such a thing.
Thanks for the tidbit. And welcome to the Cellar! |

It would be interesting to see the movie scripts for the spellings,
But just from the sounding, it may be an alternative spelling of "whang leather". To wit: the Free Dictionary has this... |
Thanks, Z28500!!

Oh, the right answer for this question was not given. "Wang leather" is actually the leather made from the skin of the penis of the steer. It's a very soft leather, and has useful properties. You can carry it in the form of a wallet, and then when you rub it, it turns into a briefcase.
Thank you Thank you very much Oldest joke ever told |
Some really entertaining answers, but whang leather is a razor strop. I asked a guy in a barber shop when I was 4, he must have been 90 (seriously!), and that's the answer he gave. He must have been born around ... 1875!

Welcome argonne, does that make you about 53 years old then?
